Smalling was great there, covered really well.
He only looked good because he ran back. That's all he did. He ran back. Good to have a defender with pace but if this was Bailly he would have killed Mahrez instead of just looking at him waiting for something to happen.

There was nothing Smalling can do. It was Jones. Vary came in front of him, got the ball and then ran. Jones was jogging initially. If he had sprinted after Vardy he may have been able to do something. Mata is not in the game at all.
He didn't just stand there. Smalling did well to actually catch up with Mahrez there and prevent a clear one v one. If Smalling took Mahrez down in that situation you just know Liescester were going to be awarded a penalty. Jones couldn't cover ground on Vardy like Smalling did on Mahrez

Look at Young, dreaming, lets Mahrez run into space with no awareness of the danger, Jones in a terrible position, Lindelof in a terrible position.
