    Fridge to start?

I have to disagree. United is one of Europe's elite sides and should be geared to to compete in four major competitions each season. I agree that our spending has been questionable but we have very little quality cover for key positions. Central defence is weak as our the full-back positions. We have no cover for Matic or Herrera and if Pogba gets injured, we are in deep shit. Up top it's not so bad as you've pointed out but if we're providing second-rate service to Sanchez and Lukaku, we'll see second-rate end product.

Ole has a massive job to do this summer (assuming he gets the job) to fix the squad problems and move some players on.

Obviously all of our players aren’t up to it. That’s for a combination of reasons. Players with big price tags and reputations aren’t performing, and fans, presumably like yourself, are judging those who may be still developing as not good enough too. I do that myself.

My point was, we have accumulated a squad of the profile we should expect. You speak of how weak our central defence is, yet our cover there is a £30/£35m player we got who is still developing (I’m not a fan of Bailly myself, but could well be just my short-sightedness), an Argentina international, Phil Jones, who is an England international. This is the cover. All things considered, fitness aside, that’s about as good as it gets for a big club. Have a look at what the rest have in reserve. May be a SAF analogy of cow’s and fields there. The likes of Nacho, Matip, Otamendi, Foyth aren’t much better than Eric Bailly or Phil Jones.

You say ‘we have no cover for Matic or Herrera’, yet we just went and bought a midfielder for £53m, who went to the WC with Brazil, and was courted by clubs of similar stature. We have a younger Brazil international who many desperately wanted to be given a squad place this year. And we have McTominay who is not good.

Full-back, we have a £19m 19 year old who was extremely highly rated, the type the transfer forum advocates us to buy as an ‘understudy’ every year.

Don’t get me wrong. The squad is not perfect. The obvious area is that’s Young shouldn’t be our first choice RB. Dalot should be behind a better player. I am also the first to acknowledge that many are not playing well enough. Some will improve with age/time - like Lindelöf has, and the rest will be sold. The point I’m making is, for a club of our size, the profile of players in our squad is pretty much what it should be. Our rivals have players with similar standings within the game. What we cannot legislate for is poor performance. But bringing in a Lukaku, Mata, Fred, Bailly, Jones, Darmian when players are unavailable is EXACTLY the sort of level you would hope a big club would be able to do. ON PAPER.

The only areas, on paper, where the squad is particularly poor in my opinion is RB and RW, as even when all fit, the first choice of Lingard and Young are not that good, even assuming every player is at their best level. However, if we apply that to others, I’d say the rest of our XI is impressive when playing at their best, and the same applies to the subs. I mean, one of them is Alexis fecking Sanchez, who is only just gone 30. He SHOULD be much better.

Went 3-5-2, rejiggering the midfield to make the best of what is available. Have Pereira run the right wing with Bailly his back up to cover Zaha. Shaw will need to stick to Townsend.

    De Gea
    Bailly Smalling Lindelof
    Pereira Fred McTominay Pogba Shaw
    Lukaku Sanchez

I'm almost certain that all of the following start tonight:

    De Gea

    Young
    Smalling
    Lindelof
    Shaw

    McTominay
    Pereira
    Pogba

    Sanchez
    Lukaku

The other player could literally be any from Dalot, Bailly, Fred, or Rashford IMO, depending on the formation we play.

The goalkeeper, back four, and McTominay sitting in front of the will be the same to give some solidity and continuity.

Dalot could play as a winger, or Young could be asked to do that. Rashford could be fit. We could play a diamond with Fred coming in, or Bailly could start and we play a back 3. I'm really not sure which I would prefer. Probably Rashford starting but if there is a chance of the injury recurring like Lingard then I'd be very cautious of his involvement.

I'd suggest he ask God for some defensive nous.

I think he just worships Scott Mctominay and thinks of him as some kind of deity.

Agreed. I think Dalot would be our best bet along wit Young as our RW/RB pair. Young in defense would be my preference. No sense in risking Rashford at least as a starter. Let him come on late if we're in need of a goal.

I heard Palace have a couple of defenders out

if we defend well we will have a great chance to win this

Predicting 4 midfielders for this one, with Fred and Pogba given more freedom.

    ---------------de Gea
    Young----Smalling--Lindelof----Shaw
    --------------McTominay
    -------Pogba-------Pereira----Fred
    --------Lukaku--------Sanchez

I do like the shouts for Dalot and Young to handle the right wing together though. Would be surprised if Rashford is risked.

    Is Rashford out?
Been trying to find the squad that travelled all day.
The other players who were injured went to Carrington today.
Rashford didnt. Make of that what you will. It is possible that he's gone with the team and may play.

    United's possible 20-man squad
De Gea, Romero, Grant; Dalot, Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Bailly, Rojo, Shaw; Garner, McTominay, Pereira, Fred, Pogba, Gomes; Chong, Sanchez, Lukaku, Rashford.

    How United could line up

If you had to guess United’s side tonight it would be:
    • De Gea, Young, Lindelof, Smalling, Shaw, McTominay, Pereira, Pogba, Rashford, Sanchez, Lukaku.
Yours truly will still be stunned if that is the team announced at 7pm. Players from the weekend back four will be rested tonight or against Southampton on Saturday, while Rashford might be at home nursing his ankle so he didn’t have to put his foot on the pedal (though he drove in yesterday).

    Crystal Palace injury news
Palace’s Mamadou Sakho has been ruled out of tonight’s game at Selhurst Park because of a knee injury suffered in their victory at Leicester on Sunday.

The Frenchman will be joined on the sidelines by fellow defender Martin Kelly, who has a muscle injury.

And right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also expected to again miss out, owing to a hamstring problem.

I hope we don't risk Rashford and he ends up getting a long term injury as that would probably end our CL qualification hopes.
