Fred is playing crap, but to be fair to him he will need games in order to adapt and play as he surely can. Vidic, and Evra also needed time to adapt, as did Lindelhof who seems to be getting better every match.

I think Fred can and will inprove in 2nd half. We are going to need him and hooking him off early will dent his confidence. He seemed to relax a bit towards end of that half.

Given the depleted squad it's been pretty good. Definitely the better side, conceded 2 chances, missed a clear cut opportunity early on (Rom). Some sloppy play in the final third, Dalot getting nowhere as a RW but provides defensive cover (he's a bit slow tbf), Sanchez been anonymous, Lukaku been OKish, Fred looks panicked, the rest are good.

We've not been great. But we're away to Crystal Palace with loads of injuries on the back of some difficult games. Good under the circumstances.

He looks like a player lacking in confidence, so he's lost his nerve in playing the ball forward. The position he is taking up in left mid means that Lindelof is using him as distribution, but he is mostly passing it back. He has made a few stray passes, but managed to recover. I think his game is in the tackle and short pass, like a Kante or Mackelle, winning balls and playing it short to a more creative player. I think he needs to swap with McTominay and play more central. Shaw has been immense so far, but I think that has been mostly down to covering for Fred. He just needs to get his confidence back and then build up some form. It's really difficult when you haven't played since Christmas.

someone did start a thread the other day about how our midfield compares with the better CL sides. it was a decent discussion. Yes we don't have that comfort of tiki-taka'ing around an opposition.

In my opinion a lot of that is down to not having a striker that can receive back to goal and recycle possession to help us up the pitch. I think if we acquire a technical CF...or, basically, just not Rom...then we have a chance of movement, transition and ball retention in midfield.

Pogba has that ability in spades. Matic isn't at all bad. Herrera knows what's around the corner and how to duck someone when they're on his shoulder. It's not all stellar passing ability, more creation of space to find that easier pass...which those 3 between them are capable of.

I wouldn't mind Fred if he was making an effort to get on the ball, make things happen, but messing up the final ball. The issue is he just doesn't seem to know what to do, and looks like he's getting in the way. He keeps on standing just to the left of Lindelof when he's on the ball and its genuinely pointless. If you watch his movement he just runs into places that makes him impossible to pass to. Maybe that's lack of confidence or maybe he just doesn't know how to play midfield.
