Our defence is frail atm and our midfield hasn't been at its best for quite a few games now. Inspiration has to come from Martial, Mkhi & Mata. I'm gonna go 3-1 to Chelsea

This is one time where a draw would be a good result. But I'm sick to death of draws now.

I think that we were pretty good against Arsenal and Spurs at home, better than City the second half and we were equal to Pool during the two games. So we've been poor against Chelsea, yes for sure, and I'll add that away from home, against these sides, we are not that good (Chelsea, Pool, Everton...)

Yes, we were good against Tottenham and that was when I thought we would start our resurgance and move up from 6th position. But that did not really happen and our performance levels began to drop again and we could only manage a draw against Arsenal and Liverpool, both matches which I felt we should have won.

The last top 6 side we faced was Liverpool and that was about 2 months ago and it left a sour taste. This encounter gives us a chance, once again, to test how we perform while facing the big boys. Martial and Pogba have been receiving a lot of critisizm lately and if they can give a good account for themselves in this match then the confidence boost they will receive will be huge and could even see us finish 2nd.

On paper, the return leg against FC Rostov is far more important, but if we can get something positive out of this match, the morale boost will be huge.

Haha! You can't just say CL spot aside, that's the whole point of winning it. Winning a trophy and at the same time Qualifying for the CL is small time? So by your logic what would you call only finishing 4th to qualify for a competition?

I would call that doing an Arsenal :wenger:

If we cant get Cl via the league EL od the way to go. Second tier pr not its still a European trophy and the one we haven't ever won.

A lot of teams haven't won it yet. Unless you consider it as the UEFA cup? In that case you'd be wrong because the UEFA cup was really hard to win and was worth fighting for.
The Europa League is just a glorified rejects competition.

There is nothing small time about qualifying for Champions league. We will be fools to go FA Cup and sacrifice Europa League. Get your shit together ffs.

Why sacrifice? I just say that I value the FA Cup more. No need to sacrifice anything, we should be aiming to win every game.
I just personally can't see the glory in the EL, considering the level of the opposition. Maybe I'll get some excitement if we get to the semis, pretty much like the Leauge Cup.

What exactly is the difference between EL and UEFA cup except the group stage?
And as I said it's a way to get CL.

Would be great if could actually compete this time. Hopefully not hand them goals - nice bonus.

What happend last time was a freak. Games don't normally end that early.
That's somewhat true. Still think our defence (especially with Smalling) is capable of dreadful defending that Chelsea can take full advantage of.

Don't know but doubt that will happen again. So what about Jones and Bailly then? Have they played much together?

Last time that early Pedro goal knocked us off balance completely. We need to be careful of their early onslaught.

The longer the game goes the more we will grow into it IMO. Just hope the legs aren't too heavy after running around in that mudbath.

As for a team I'd like to see.

    -DDG-

    - Valencia - Bailly - Rojo - Shaw -

    - Carrick -

    - Herrera - Pogba -

    Mkhitaryan - Rashford - Martial -

Exactly what Chelsea would hope to see us play (or anyone they are up against tbf). Would get smashed.

Now we should be able to see the real progress and if lessons have been learnt from the previous drubbing. The frontline should be a bit more mobile without Zlatan which is a plus. Would not be the end of the world if United lose. But a win will surely give a huge confidence to the team. Which is what everyone said after the EFL cup win :D

I don't think we'll get thrashed but I fear our inability to finish minus Zlatan will mean Chelsea will edge out a win.

Still, if there's a time for our players to turn up, now is the time.

    Why exactly?
Our wide forwards getting pulled back consistently with their wingbacks, leaving a 19 year old isolated against 3 solid, experienced defenders. Our FBs not getting into attack enough as Pedro and Hazard wouldn't need to track back too much. We'd effectively be trying to beat them down the middle with Pogba as the extra guy to create chances, but the middle is exactly what they've got covered by playing 3 at the back. They have basically been ripping teams apart who play this way all year. Even if they only get a few chances, the space opens up for them so well because they leave numbers in attack that they are putting away the easy chances.

All this doom and gloom about Chelsea is a bit unjustified, I'd be looking forward to it if I wasn't working. The team we played against them in October was far from our best and we've found our feet since then, we're much tougher to beat. I'm more concerned about our own attacking threat more than what they will do to us.

Put Carrick in for some protection and play quick players on the break. If Rashford can hold the ball up even reasonably well we stand a chance.

How would you lines us up?

How would you lines us up?
    Valencia - Bailly - Rojo - Shaw
    Lingard - Herrera - Pogba - Young
    Mhki - Rashford

Young was the toughest decision because we desperately need to play wide players who can cross against their back line, but we don't actually have anyone capable of that on the left side, so I've gone for the best all around cover.

4-4-2 and midfield 2? Now that they would really wish..

Ok, please return the favor and explain to me why they would wish that?
That line-up is ridiculously open. They would destroy us with their counter-attacks, easily.

Having said that, I think they'll win easily anyway so we might as well go toe to toe, try to make it an entertaining game. Mourinho is unlikely to go that route though.

Kante and Matic aren't exactly attacking threats, and we could set up with 2 organized banks of 4 to limit the amount of space for their attack. How is it so wide open?

4-4-2 and midfield 2? Now that they would really wish..
I think this could be a good shout. At the moment using 4-2-3-1 or 4 -3-3 would still leave us weaker against chelsea's overload (as carrick has been poor lately). Might as well go for a defensive 4-4-2 and have young and Lingard check their wingbacks and hope miki can give us one good break

I think when the UEFA cup was in, the CL only had real champions so all the other teams below (2nd, 3rd, 4th...) were in the UEFA cup. It made the cup quite strong, if I recall.

EL is a good competition and I want United to win it. It's certainly not some reject competition or something.

    ?? I'm waiting.
The midfield would be disastrous. Herrera and Pogba in a two against any of the big sides leaves us exposed and neither of the wide players offer any creativity. Unless we put 9 or 10 men behind the ball it'd fail spectacularly.

Christ, most of you are acting like you're Sunderland and we're Barcelona. This'll be a very close, hard fought match. My guess is very low scoring.

No blow out like some of you are predicting.
