Think it be Laird in the not to distance future to compete with AWB, with Williams competing with Shaw

Even when Fernandes is poor, he's still the most important player in the game.

The tempo he sets is what's making the difference from the first half of the season. Relatively little has come off for him, but even so it's forcing United up the pitch and Villa into rushing things.

He reminds me of Hazard. Technically good with the ball but doesn't actually produce all that much.

That's his natural position. He had to learn to be a LB after Laird kept him out of the reserve team

I don’t think it was a purple patch per se, more like the whole Villa squad were proper up for it earlier in the season. Sure people were banging on about signing McGinn for 50 million back then. The whole team tailed off as they came to terms with the league. He’s still their stand out player by a longshot, but the rest of the team is so crap it’s hard for him to do anything.
