Sunderland AFC nicknamed The Black Cats - are a professional football club based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England; and were founded in 1879 as Sunderland and District Teachers Association Football Club by James Allan. Although they haven't been competitive in recent seasons, Sunderland were one of the most successful clubs in the nation through the late 19th century, and the early parts of the 20th, winning 6 league championships between 1892 and 1936, and were termed the 'Team of All Talents' at the turn of the 20th century; aside from winning the FA Cup twice and the League Cup once. The club plays its home games at the Stadium of Light, and has a long-standing sporting rivalry with neighbors Newcastle United in a match termed the Tyne-Wear Derby.

Hope Mata and Lingard get dropped.

Will probably miss this one unless they have the premier league on the tv's in Cuba? Anyway. Same lineup obviously. Winning today would've been huge in terms of top 4 hopes, but now we really need to go on a run of wins and get some luck from the others.

This strikes me as the type of game that we'll dominate but draw. Sunderland are an inconsistent side but have enough quality to hurt any team on their day. Defoe, Johnson and M'Vila are more than capable of turning on the style.

Another disappointing result cannot be tolerated.

Same line-up I imagine, unless LvG feels Carrick needs a rest or if he chooses to field Herrera with him to add a bit moire quality on the ball which we should have the Lions share of against a struggling Sunderland side playing Big Sam tactics.

Lingard got the goal so he can't be dropped. I am a big fan of Mata but what if we play Januzaj instead of him? I just want Adnan to be given a chance.

Some of you lot are incredible. It's like you guys are programmed to who should start without looking at what is happening on the pitch. The team that has started the last three games is easily our best team at the moment.

Whilst I'm not either Fellaini nor Lingards biggest fan, you can't really change the team at the moment.

    Same as Chelsea.

    De Gea
    Darmian - Smalling - Blind - BorthwickJackson
    Carrick - Fellaini
    Lingard - Mata - Martial
    Rooney

Same team as we played vs Chelsea. If they're playing well there is no need to drop them.

We are playing our Europa game in the game after this right? If so that's when we should bring in Schneiderlin, Herrera, Memphis + Pereira.

Not sure we can play our second string in the Europa - that's arguably our best shot at CL qualification now

Go with the same starting XI. But the substitutions have to come a lot earlier if we're going to bother with them. Mata had vanished well before he was subbed off. Fellaini doesn't quite vanish late in games but all he offers in late game situations is a target on crosses. I'd much rather see him come off the bench late to pound on weary defenders though.

But it shouldn't matter a whole lot if we make one or two tweaks to the starting XI...we should be able to pound Sunderland with or without Mata and Fellaini starting.

I wouldn't really call Schneiderlin, Herrera second string. I wouldn't even call Memphis second string but it's about opinions. Plus we need to rotate with the amount of games we have coming up.

Memphis should be playing for the U-21's.

This. I don't know what to think about his time here but for those who think LVG shows special treatment to dutch players need to ask RVP and Memphis their opinion on the matter. Memphis appears to have let the football lifestyle go to his head. He is an attacking style player so I'm not surprised to see he has not done well with our style this season. Disappointed he is not getting more chances but after his play yesterday and the pass back against Stoke one can hardly blame LVG for not using him more.

I'd go with our same lineup against Chelsea except swap Mata for Herrera and either rest Mata or let him play in place of Lingard. Lingard has not been very consistent and may need a rest.
We then need to rotate some players for the games before Arsenal. Arsenal will be a tough match so we should make sure the Chelsea lineup is fit.

Defoe will score, Adam Johnson will play out his skin as usual against the bigger teams.

Can see Sunderland getting a draw. 2-2

    Same team, please.

    EDIT:

However, I would really like to see a midfield three of:

    Mata (10)
    Carrick (6) Herrera (8)

Having said that, despite him not being everyone's cup of tea, Fellaini is doing a good job in the middle of the park, and has deserved to keep his spot in the team. He's provided us with steel, and has been very important on set pieces.

The disappointment of losing a lead late in the prior match and our dramatically improved form from December will comfortably carry us over a woeful Sunderland side.

Just to give you a sense of how bad Sunderland really is, they came to California last summer and got mercilessly torn apart by a USL (American third division) side, although the score recorded only a 1-0 win. Sunderland be relegated this season, deserved so.

Anything can happen, but a Sunderland win over United this weekend would be beyond shocking.

We are too open in midfield I feel, I don't think it's crazy to consider adding some more ground coverage in there in the form of Herrera.
