Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies) is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue — leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park — which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

Going for a draw. 1-1. Will be a tough game

I am worried about Sunday. Newcastle are on cloud 9 right now and we've just had to play out strongest team tonight and laboured badly.

If we play like we did tonight it will be an away win.

Hoping Varane is back but most likely ETH may go with Ronaldo up front rather than Rashford, Sancho and Antony. Think we may win by a goal margin...we cant seem to buy a comfortable win!

They are a very well coached team. It's going to be a slog I feel. Just glad Isak isn't playing.

Hopefully St Maximum is out. He always turns into a menace against us and causes us problems. We'll have Varane back hopefully. It'll be a tough tight game. But I think we'll see a good performance from us.

I’d like to see Casemiro, McTominay, Eriksen for this one as the middle three. Rest of the team picks itself (with Martial obviously in if he’s fit).

    Hoping for Martial
If not ready I'd go for Rashford Antony Sancho

    McTominay suspended otherwise I’d agree.

Tough one, can see Newcastle knicking a victory here

3-2 squeaky bum time (Antony, Eriksen, Casemiro)

We were dominant in today's win. We didn't labor badly.

This team looks like it's rounding into shape. I think we're a tough matchup for Newcastle.

We have a duty to football to pummel these sports washers.

They need to be schooled by a real football club

However has done a good job at Newcastle and seems to have the team prepared to run all game for him.

Obviously on paper United have better players. Not sure there's much between the teams at the moment. Not gonna be easy.

    We played well last night.

Think we may struggle here after last night.

Fecking shite this isn't on TV, yet Palace-Leicester get a separate slot entirely.

De Gea, Shaw, Martinez, Varane, Dalot, Casemiro, Eriksen, Fernandes, Rashford, Ronaldo, Antony.

I’m usually never worried about Newcastle at OT. But when I see we have only scored 19 goals in 12 games…more worryingly conceded 18, I fear a very tough game once again. We don’t seem to draw either so it’s a tough game to call.

I’m going 3-2 United but would not be surprised if we lost.

Think we may drop points with a really poor performance but then have a decent run against Spurs and Chelsea.

Hopefully Varane and martial are fit.

    De Gea
    Dalot Varane Martinez Shaw
    Casemerio
    Bruno Eriksen
    Anthony Martial Rashford

2-1 United gonna be a tricky game no doubt.

ASM is going to have Dalot on toast. Will need support from Antony.

Heads need to roll if we don't win this one.

    Really.
Newcastle United have become a pretty good PL side and I certainly don't see this as an easy match. Far from it. I am hopeful of a good result of course.

    de Gea
    Dalot Varane Martinez Shaw
    Casemiro Eriksen
    Antony Bruno Rashford
    Ronaldo
    -----
Dubravka; Malacia, Lindelof; Fred, Iqbal; Elanga, Sancho, Garnacho, Pellistri

Squad does look a little thin with the injuries/suspension, assuming all of Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, McTominay, Van de Beek, and Martial miss out. Hopefully one or two are back.

I think Dalot is one yellow away from a suspension too? Would be tough to lose him for Spurs on Wednesday or Chelsea on the Saturday after. If AWB isn't actually injured then it might bite us in the backside not having some minutes under his belt during this period. Lindelof or Malacia Right Back?

Newcastle are formidable, even City had to work for it. We make the same mistakes as against Everton combined with the dreadful finishing against Nicosia, and we will get severely punished. The laboured win against the latter just a few days before this game certainly doesn’t help. If this was away, I wouldn’t fancy our chances to get anything at all, but at home I think we can grind out a draw.

    2:2.

This is a game where a double-pivot is required and only one out of Eriksen/Bruno should play.

Think this will be quite similar to the Arsenal game. Nervous about this because Newcastle has been amazing this season (their only loss was to Liverpool, in which they were very unlucky). I hope we are clinical, I think our pace can damage them.

    DDG
    Dalot Varane Martinez Shaw
    Casemiro Eriksen
    Antony Bruno Rashford
    Ronaldo (Tony if fit)

There is no way Ronaldo can play 3 games within 7 days. I am even willing to have Elanga in for Ronaldo if we are that desperate.

So hopefully Martial is back so we have some interchangeable combo of Sancho, Rashford and Martial up front. Antony to come in as a sub.
