The MMA thread

I'd like to see a new champ in Hardy, but he's just a heavy hitter like Alves was when he fought GSP. Sadly, he doesn't stand a chance imo.

strikefarce

so they have fedor who is widely rated as no1 hw in the world

they also have overeem the steroid machine who is their current hw champion...

overeem has not fought for them since 2007...

both are fit and both looking for a fight...

anybody with half a brain would put then in a title fight...

strikefarce put overeem against rodgers... with no title on the line:wenger:

and line up fedor against werdum a few weeks after...

M1 are all about making money, they don't give a shit whether people see the best fights or not. That Finkelstein is a cnut with his "co-promotion" too. He's squeezing out two extra fights, as I'm sure Overeem and Fedor will have to fight soon. Who else have Strikeforce got for Fedor like?

it was a 4 fight deal I think so perhaps they will have him fight barnet (outside the usa I imagine)... and overeem i suppose...

but what happens if the grim wins... a champion who almost had hos head taken off by fedor :wenger:

alves out...

fitch to fight saunders now...

though on the plus side that must make daley vs kos a likley title eliminator...

and daley gsp.... hummm daley can knock out anybody in that division...

and daley hardy at the ice arena in nottingham... hummm dream fight (if they would do it)

Anybody watch the weigh in? Hardy giving it the pantomime villian schtick. Wore an "I Hate Dan Hardy" t-shirt. He acts the cock but it all seems like a bit of a game to him. Its hard not to warm to him. St Pierre in great shape as always, but was it just me or did he look a bit weight-drained? His face looked kind of hollow. Probably nothing. Iit was nothing like De La Hoya before the Pac fight for example.

GSP knows what he's doing. He's got the best of men workin with him. he'll look tip top tomorrow don't worry.

he sais in an interview he had put on 6lbs of core muscle and would be going in the cage tomorrow at 191... thats a huge cut for gsp who typically cut less than a lot of fighters...

will be interesting if it makes it to championship rounds to see if it has an effect...

6lbs of actual muscle (not the 6lbs of muscle, fat and water that the average trainee puts on when they gain weight) is pretty significant. He was also the only fighter at the weigh in that I noticed grabbed for a water bottle right after the staredown. Its unlikely but it could prove to be a factor tonight

yes 6lbs of core lean muscle...

but i know for a fact that dan has put on more than that in the last 12 months as well...

dan has an iv for this fight as well when he has traditionally not used them so he will also be bigger...

im soooooooooooo looking forward to this fight... wish i was there... i know the odds are against it but im hoping dan can pull it off

At what times does this start (CET/GMT)? Normally I would just watch it tomorrow, but I've got a week-long holiday, so I might as well watch it live. Even if I avoid all info about the result, watching it a day after the fact just isn't quite like watching it when its happening.

In that vein, does anyone know where I could find a reliable stream? I'd rather not watch it on too poor a stream, or one that cuts out all the time.

Cheers, it seems like I might get something out of that one. There's a stream that is going to cost €2 to watch, which will supposedly be good quality and stable. I'll look for some decent free streams first, but I consider €2 quite worth paying to see it "live".

I just hope it's not another disappointing one. I've had UFC's where almost all of my favourites were beaten. Bleak times. Hopefully at least either Hardy or Mir will win. Mir is a bit of a cnut, but I can't help but like him. I suspect black magic.

they are usually decent...

and if you were to bail tominght and watch it tomorrow morning they ususlly have multiple free streems...

as for mir... i respect him...

winning the title so young then coming back after that crash... then essentially re-building a strinking game from the base up, then getting smashed and going back and doing the power work to get the size... still not sure he is a technical westler but you cant fault his desire to get better and better

Im a newbie when it comes to UFC. Why is Mir held with such high regard but has only actually had 17 fights in his entire career?

Carwins stats are incredible ending all fights in the 1st. This will be the 1st time I have seen him, so Im looking forward to it

took the hw title when he was young... still youngest hw champion ever i believe

has incredible bjj... his hips and escapes are off the hook... guess you have to roll to appecieate fully but his bjj is very very good...

had a crash and it was thought he might never fight again...

came back... and since then lets not forget he has won against lesnar... rebuilt his strinking game and out struck noguera!... plus has rebuilt his body to deal with the new super big HW division...

and whilst carwins stats are incredible you have to look at who they came against and gonzaga (who rocked him) asside none of them are consudered notable opponents

looking forward to the ufc tonight. My picks for tonight are hardy, carwin and saunders. Hoping hardy will put out the upset but gsp will win in all likelihood.

Hardy, mir and fitch...

but like you by brain still says gsp has the tools and should win...

but heart over head time... ko/tko hardy!

that's what i'm saying......hardy gsp is one of the fights ive been looking forward to all year. Daley kos and shogun machida the other two. Hopefully hardy can catch a clean hook on him and send gsp shivering to the ground. :D

i called that shot a long time ago... left hook on the way in... (or his pointy elbow)...

as for fights im looking forward to...

hardy vs daley (if they will???)
or gsp vs daley...

id take daley in both those!... you would win your bet as well...

I just called my friend and told him that fitch fighting saunders and daley kos most likely for #1 spot. He went a bit quiet lol. I think he regrets making the bet. Another fighter I really like in that division is paulo thiago. I think that guy's a future champ too. WW division is shaping up nicely. Think daley and paulo would give gsp good fights. When paulo lost to fitch he was still part-time fighter and for swick is when he really went training full time.

yeah at the ufc in london i think i was the person shouting loudest when that uppercut caught kos... (everybody else was booing i was about the only fecker shouting yay)... you could hear me shouting "feck him up dan... hurt the cnut as well) during his fight...

to me injury permitting the wiunner of kos daley is most likley to get the shot and i think daley is the best stand up guy in that division

agreed. He's a devasting striker. I honestly think kos is dumb enough to try to stand with him like he did with AJ and daley gonna make him pay for it.
How's daley's ground game? Improved much since jake shields? After he ko'd hazelett in post-conference he said he'd love to fight kos or fitch to showcase his array of ground game.

his take doen deffence is good... he is so strong anyway... great knees in the clintch and good sprawl...

a lot better than me on the greound but in truth his strengths are getting back up and covering against gnp... he is not in the same league as a shields still... but there is probably only a handful of fighteres in the world who are...

dan has just got his brown belt in bjj... paul is a purble belt so obviousley he is not quite as good but they are both very stong and explosive and very hard to hold down...

would still struggle against an attacking bjj style but there are not many of them and has the explosivness to be very difficult for a wrestler...

Didn't doubt it for a second with GSP mate! Was just making the distinction as to how cutting with 5 additional pounds of actual muscle and maintaining conditioning is a different matter to cutting excess water weight etc.

I noticed Dan was looking noticably sturdier than when I first saw him...looks thicker around the shoulders and back especially.

dan is a lot stronger... and a lott better at bjj than people in the ufc have seen...

he has not really been on the grouns with a bjj guy or a wrestloer so people just assume he cant do it... truth is he can its just plan b for him...

having said that they dont come much better at bjj and certainly wrestling than gas... especially a gsp with more muscle than ever bofore...

also if he keepd his hands low (and he has in the past against shooters then he opens himself to a high kick and gsp's koko karate background makes tat a danger)... still im backing dan and win or loose i expect him to put i na good performance... especially if the fighy goes long...

The unfortunate thing for them is they in the same division as the best wrestler in the ufc.

yes... but who knows how long he will remain in that division?

gsp is a great fighter though... cant fault his mentality and his workrate and the way he has built his alround game...

seems like a nice enough bloke as well... i just want his head to have big dents on it at then end of tonight and there to be no belt around his belly

From your lips to god's ear.
AS for being a nice enough bloke, I've heard he's a douchebag in real life. I forgot who told me. I mentioned it in this thread before but for the life of me I can't remember lol.

yeah but dan and paul can be right cnuts as well... infact i think its part of a fighters make up... especially when psyching up for a fight...

what i see of him he has done things his own way and i have respect for that... and you cant fault his workrate and technical ability... plust the ability to see his own weeknesses and fix them...

true, you're right. I got respect for the guy, don't get me wrong, just don't like the guy and would love to see him coma toast on the ground ala bispin against hendo. I'm gonna be one of two people in Canada rooting against GSP tonight lol.

i remember saying when he signed a 4 fight deal that if he won them all he would be in for a totle shot and people at the time thinking he had no chance...

im realy happy for him and proud for his trainers that he has got the shot...

I honestly think Daley will get there as well...

there are some good fighters outside the ufc...

aoki, alvarez, diaz, shields, henderson, moussasi, overeem, barnet and fedor all spring to mind as people who would be in the title mix...

i cant help but wish that pankration could come back for the olympics (inc knees to downed opponents) and have a true title with people from all promotions

Gun to your head Ezee, who do you think would win between Hardy and Daley? Also, a few weeks back you said (implied rather...) that you thought one of them would be more up for the fight than the other. I'm guessing one of them has got the better of the other one in sparring, and I'm guessing it's Daley that wants the fight more...

I dunno. I haven't seen that much of either of them, but they look similar in style, but Daley just seems that bit stronger and more explosive. Hardy's got power, but Daley seems like a UFC equivalent of a young Nigel Benn. Maybe not the most refined all-around fighter (he could be, but I haven't seen it) but a force of nature when he lets his strikes go. Dan seems similar in style and mentality, without the freakish athleticism and aggression.

neither of them wants the fight... but they both want the title...

I dont think they would fight other than for a title fight... and in terms of money (and lets face it is is a job for those 2 then its a better fight for daley to take)

as for against each other i think dans better on the ground... bith are very strong but more defence orientated on the ground... id say dan if the more rounded (only slightly out of the 2)

however they look to end fights with strikes and if it comes down to a striking contest id back daley against any ww out there...

if i was putting money on it id back semtex... could go either way of course and as they know each other so well it could be a very tactical encounter... but if it comes down to a big hook for me i give the exde to daley

Very interesting stuff, thanks mate.
