Manchester United back in for Karim Benzema

Karim Benzema

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is back in the hunt for French striker Karim Benzema - and hoping that Lyon miss out on the Champions League to make the deal easier.

Fergie has been on the trail of the hitman for a year but was priced out of a swoop last summer when he turned instead to Dimitar Berbatov.

Now United are plotting a second attempt for Benzema with French giants Lyon at risk of missing out on a Champions League slot.

Lyon wanted around £40m for Benzema a year ago and were in a position to hold onto their home-grown starlet. Now the striker, anxious to stay in Europe’s elite competition, may push for the move himself.

If Lyon drop their asking price considerably United would snap up Benzema in an instant - which would mean the end of Carlos Tevez’s chances of being signed permanently.

Ferguson’s top spies were at Lyon’s game with Paris Saint Germain at the weekend when Benzema and his pals fired blanks.

Apparently another shit stirring story.

It'll be yet another long long summer with these transfer speculations - Teveth, Ronaldo, Benzema, etc...

Thinking back to the whole Diarra transfer saga before we signed Carrick and Hargraves, and Aulas who's renowned for being a stubborn negotiator, it would make for a lot of stories and a long summer indeed.

He did say he was gonna stay one more year right after Barca trashed them but I'm sure he never expected his team miss out on the CL even if I believe they still have chances to be champions again

Is he a genuine United target?

His name comes up time and time again but I cannot remember one story where either United or he himself declared any interest in the move

SAF has been quoted that he admires Benzema, that's all we know.

In an interview with THE LEAGUE champions league magazine Benzema was asked "what about the english premier league? Manchester United are said to have kept an eye on you for a long time now" his response was " I love English football too and when I watch it, its just for the red devils. Definitely they are my favourite team. The funny thing is I play in France, but I dont really watch the Ligue 1 games. Im mainly interested in watching Spanish, English and Italian football. " Im surprised this hasnt really been reported in the papers

After Ferguson's quotes from last week that they are working on a new deal for Tevez, I can't see a place for Benzema in the squad. With Berbatov, Rooney, Tevez + Ronaldo I can't see where he fits in.

If we keep Tevez, we will have enough. Macheda coming through will help significantly also. In my opinion, we could strengthen other areas first.

you know if hypothetically we sold ronaldo and nani for around 80 million and we didnt buy tevez...

benzema at about 40
ribery at about 30
and silva at about 30

would be a net spend of 20 million...

you know what id be happy with that...

i didnt think the benzema thing would happen but if llyon dont get cl football and real spunk all their load on ronaldo there couldnt be many other clubs he would join?

italian football seems a bit 3rd rate at the moment and would barca want him as they have henry, messi and eto with bojan coming through...

its probably muppetry of the highest order but a bid for benzema, a bid for silva as valencia are fecked financially and a bid for ribery now that klinsmann has been sacked... well it probably wont happen but id preffer those 3 rather than kaka

though id be delighted if we kept ronaldo but im not convinced we will and the longer this tevez thing drags on i just dont see him staying :(

I don't think we would want to dismantle a team that's core has been successful in bringing home - almost - three league titles, one Champions League, one World Club Championship and a couple of league titles. That doesn't make sense for the players or the club.

Ronaldo will stay for the foreseeable future, if not forever. I highly doubt that he will want to up and leave now that he sees exactly what he is part of - one of the most successful sides in the history of football.

i think ronaldo will go... i hope not but just like with beckham i think its reached the point where its inevitable...

as for tevez... i just cant help think if we were going to sign him we would have done it before he could get offers from other clubs... and nani... well hes shown a lot of potential but hes not shown much to say he will consistently deliver...

and who would have expected Ince and kanchelskis to be sold?

cant see benzema signing for a club that wont guarantee him a start .. and with berba and rooney , its not going to happen at united .

think we will stay away from this one

But a player like United wont settle for being top of English football, it's boring always winning or coming close; sooner or later he'll want a new challenge.

Be interesting to see him here and think he could knock Berbatov off the perch of being a starter quite easily.

Great player that United lad, how he's not in the first team I don't know.

ya can't blame the guy aulas tho....

if real come sniffing for ronaldo and we decide to let him go we'd squeeze every last cent from madrid

i still think we got ripped off selling beckham and van nistelrooy for what amounted to about 35 million for both...

think he would be a brilliant signing - i'm sure we're not the only club interested though

our realistic rivals for his signing are barca, madrid, chelsea and city and he's been quoted before that he prefers to move to spain

barca have the best attack in europe at the minute - would they want to change it and lose henry or etoo?? madrid have van nistelrooy back so they have higuin, raul, van nistelrooy, huntelaar and saviola - do they need him

will the spanish big 2 try and buy david villa???

i think he'd be a great signing and a different kind of striker to the ones we have but who knows.....

we never would negotiate a sale as well as aulas. he is in a different league compared to gill.

well hopefully lyon stumble in the french league - it would strengthen our hand...

they are 5 points off the league leaders....

On another issue, Benzema's a class act of a footballer, I'd love to see him in this team. I reckon we just keep what we have:

Berbatov
Rooney
Tevez
Ronaldo

4 really good forwards. The stories this summer are going to be totally baseless and pathetic.

depends on what happens to tev/berba futures. tev could be let go and berba becoming a bench striker with rooney and benzema starting up top.
Berbatov's future is assured and he wont become bench striker either. He is too good for that. And IMO even if we keep Tevez I just have that feeling Fergie will not want to miss out on Benzema if he can bag him. And with Rooney openly saying he loves playing on the left nowadays, and the Nani's not yet consistently good enough to take over the Giggs role properly, is more than likely to end up there. Besides, it's not like the role will shackle him again in anyway. The way he has developed this season.

true. esp with attacking LB's that we have like evra and fabio, wazza's love for tracking back fits in well with giving us proper cover on the wing.

------benzema-----
wazza--berba---ronaldo

:D:D:D

Lyon is very good at squeezing top dollar for their players, and Benzema is quite likely the biggest, most sought after player they've produced. We'll be looking at upwards of 40mil, which we will not have.

I think his most likely destination would be Real. 40mil won't post a problem as they don't work with a budget based on profit and loss, and I think Benzema has previously hinted at his desire to join them as well.

This
Chief, Benzema can also play on the left wing like Rooney so the possibilities would be multiplied

Kouroux, how well as he actually played this year, is he showing improvement as a player?

I have seen very little of the French league this season and only a few Lyon CL games.
