He's played on the wing or in CAM. He's not played a minute as a standard CM, which is the role that needs filling in the team.
Foden has not been playing on the left wing for quite a while, I am not sure if you have been watching City's matches. The LW was either occupied by Doku or Grealish.

Look, I am a Mainoo fan, he is the main reason why I started watching more football this season. But don't let your hope up if the boy does not start for England this summer. I hope he will make it in the final squad for Euro and I will be rooting for England to win if he is in it.

Think Gallagher will start. The comment Southgate made about the team being more open with Mainoo in it was very much what you come to expect from Southgate.

What does this mean.

Foden started the cup final against us on the LW.

Not his best position, but I also agree that's where he'll play in the summer. With Jude as CAM.

No chance Jude, Rice and Foden play in the same midfield

He reminds me of Anderson. Just needs to “attack the space” more and have a McDonald’s fetish.

But in all seriousness, hopefully he’s managed correctly and also has self discipline, because the kid has the possibilities to be a Utd legend.

I agree, I think the competition for Mainoo in this England team is Gallagher. I doubt Southgate would consider playing 2 AMs and 1 holding or pushing Bellingham back to a more CM role.

There is a good chance they will. Bellingham is not a traditional CAM who stay high up pitch all the time, he often drops back to pick up the ball, same goes with Foden.

Anderson was very talented but super lazy. Mainoo works hard but his weakness is his inexperience not knowing to position himself into hot spot where all the actions are. That is why sometime he looks lost and become invisible. The more he plays with Bruno the better he will get.

He might. You think he will pick Mainoo over Foden to start? England is blessed with plenty of wing forwards, he is not going to bench one of them to move Foden out of his favourite position at the heart of the midfield to play Mainoo so just to satisfy some United fans. Foden has been playing in central midfield role at City this season and he will likely do so in this Euro. Even in these friendly matches when he was put out on the left wing on paper, he had tendency to drift inside and Southgate knows that is his favourite position.

Zero chance of that happening. Foden is an attacking midfielder and Southgate is notoriously conservative so it’ll be either Mainoo or Gallagher as the third alongside Rice and Bellingham.

Interesting you can accuse me of not watching City games when you seem to think Foden is playing as a CM. He literally played 4 of his last 5 games of the season on the left, any other time he’s not played on the left he’s been playing at AM.

I have not yet developed an opinion on whether Southgate should start Mainoo, but what I will say here is that Mainoo's progress at this early stage of his career is astonishing, especially considering the demands of the position he plays.

I would say England’s best balanced midfield is a Rice, Mainoo, Bellingham three. There’s just no other English player with a profile like Mainoo. His ability to excel in most areas of the midfield and recycle possession, is just something we don’t have elsewhere. However, I think it’s a lot to put on him, and I would probably expect Gallagher to start in his place. We could go bold and play Foden and Bellingham in front of Rice but I think Southgate is too pragmatic for that. In possession it could be wonderful, but out of possession it would probably struggle.

Gallagher will start in England's first underwhelming match.

Kobbie to have an impact off the bench and then have the whole country crying out for him to start.

It will be this or, England will win in an unconvincing manor with Gallagher playing as he always does (average) and Southgate will continue to justify his selection by saying we won. Then we will come undone agaisnt the first possible decent team we play because Gallagher isn’t good enough. I know Utd fans want to plead caution, but there’s absolutely no footballing reason for not starting Mainoo. It’s clearly the best and most balanced midfield three England can play.

Don't rule out Adam Wharton and Trent A. They are the options Southgate has taken.

I’m the opposite I think he needs a rest. I don’t think he could have envisaged playing as much as he did this season.
Playing so young, gaining experience, is very valuable. He has plenty of energy. Just look at Ronaldo or Rooney

He gives me the impression he plays as if all the hype has gone to his head. Could be wrong of course. For me he needs to show far more urgency and comittment in his play. Feck his age he's already good enough. Just needs to put a sweat on and put his stamp on games. Bollocking is maybe too strong . A rocket up his arse then!
This post aged well

Southgate won't start Mainoo. He was included in the squad for experience with the team in a big tournament. He is still too young and inexperienced. He may come on from the bench depending on circumstances. He is not the key player for England like what Rooney was at 18.

Reading what you quoted is actually really funny to me. It's like the poster accidentally wrote on the wrong players performances thread.

His almost lazy style is exactly what makes him so good. His movement and ball retention does the work for him.

Going to be an outstanding player

I agree. Someone on here (@Fortitude I think) mentioned about there being a hierarchy to which team mate, players defer possession to. Its a real thing and every team has one. I believe the version of Mainoo England needs, is one that does what he currently brings to the table and is also number 2 or 3 on that hierarchical chain. He's not high on that chain for a poor united team at the moment, so I can't imagine he'll be there for an England team with Jude, Foden, Saka, Stones and Rice on the field. Heck, wven Maguire.
This is why it sometimes seems like the game passes him by.
To be clear, I think he absolutely already has the talent to be really high on that chain as is. The issue, is more about commanding respect and trust, which just takes time. The only player I've seen do this at a young age is Cesc.
So yes, I wouldn't be suprised if Southgate doesn't start him.

Despite missing almost the first half of the season, Mainoo ended up playing three games worth of minutes more than Ronaldo did in his entire first season here (both being 18yo).

There does come a point where playing enough to develop and grow can cross to a point of being too much for a young player (physically and/or mentally). If he does play a fair bit for England, we really should try to limit his minutes for us in his first month or two next season. But I don't think we will, and it will run the risk of burnout as next season wears on.

Was he called up for England?

Southgate will ignore him until England is in trouble and Kobbie gets subs on and puts on an absolute display only for England to get knocked out.

Why isn’t he eligible for our young player of the year award? I thought Rashford won it the year he broke through.

or is Kobbie no longer eligible since he won it last year?

Actually i was thinking about it and one person Mainoo kinda reminds me of right now with his style of play and ability to play multiple positions is Claudio Marchisio, he's played pretty much all the roles for Juventus, he wasn't really super memorable but he brought balance as that box to box 8.

Right now Mainoo is kinda the same he doesn't necessarily excell in one thing outside of calmness on the ball, but his ability to just play anywhere in the midfield is amazing.

Have you actually watched him this season? He has played as a no. 10. Same as Bellingham. Bellingham will start as a 10 for England with Rice and ANother. Gallagher most likely for his physicality, with Mainoo coming on. Foden will start on the left wing, mark my words. Saka and Kane as the other forwards.

"Hmmm....I don't know if he's a number 6 or an 8???"

HE'S ALL OF THEM, INCLUDING A NUMBER 10. COULD PROBABLY GO IN GOAL AND BUFFON THE SHIZ OUT OF IT. BOW DOWN AT HIS FEET. WE GOT A GOOD ONE HERE.
