Their defence is very average now. That midfield could be incredible in a couple of seasons but I think they’re a bit away and by then Salah has gone. It is worryingly moving back to what in my opinion made Pool so good though - that technical high energy midfield that will outrun everyone and just feed a pacy front line.
They could challenge this year. But the next two windows they will probably spend 250m+ upgrading the defence and that should see thrm back into another cycle of success/challenging.

You'd think they were signing prime Xavi based on the reactions by some of the posters here. It's Caicedo who's had one good season in the PL, and they're paying £110m. He's a good player with great potential, but come on..

We're paying 70+ m for a striker who doesn't even have 1 good season in weaker league. It's hard to take high moral ground on this.

I think you have it the other way around. Quite clearly City will hope to challenge Liverpool for the title.
Yep, exactly. Also, if we assume that our new and older players will be shit and Liverpool's new and older players will be world class then they'll have a significantly better team than us this season. It's difficult to be positive when the worst case scenario I've just made up in my head is a possibility.

Generational talent  Another term absolutely overused and butchered by this place. He’s a potentially great player and I’d have love him here, but the money for a defensive player is grim and I hate it a lot.

Interesting how no one gave a shit when he was going to sign for Chelsea, but when he is about to sign for Liverpool, he is a generational talent who is as good as Casemiro, Kanté and Xavi rolled into the finest player the world has ever seen and will completely transform their game. Absolute bedwetters.

£110m is insane amount of money and we were never going to go for him at this price, even disregarding the fact he's never played for Ajax or in Eredivisie which probably makes him a less likely target anyway.

We should have however brought him when we were heavily linked before his Brighton transfer, it's the type of business we almost never do (picking up players before they go to Europe and their price double, or goes six times up as is the case here).

But Caicedo goes to Liverpool and improves them instantly by a high margin. If this works then they are sorted for 10years.
Liverpool needed a DM and we needed a striker, each club adressed their issue. But let's not make it sound like Caicedo is more of a risk than Hojlund.

If he’s as good as he potentially could be, he doesn’t stay that long. He’s already shown, he’s happy to strop and sulk to move to a place that pays more.

:wenger: This narrative.

Is it fair to say Liverpool have had a better window than us? They’ve got rid of deadwood, signed 3 midfielders who’d all get in to our team. With Kane off to Bayern as well whilst we pin all our hopes on an unproven youngster, it’s not looking like that good a window now.

I really can't take this thread seriously with posts like this. Because scousers went and paid 100m+ on some player that had 1 decent season in the league it somehow makes what we've done so far shite. Give me a break.

Caicedo is the guy who looks closest to top DM prospect out there. He has loads of potential and already played key role for well drilled side. Two top sides were after him this window.
I don't even know why we're discussing Casemiro vs Caicedo now. IMO there isn't much between them RIGHT NOW, apart from one being 21 and the second 31. This is how high I rate Caicedo.
About four years ago that was Rice, after that it was Bellingham, now it’s Caceido. Madrid supposedly had their midfield sorted for the next decade when splashing out 100m on Tchouaméni.
Meanwhile City signed Rodri and have dominated while Liverpool were a close second with Fabinho as the DM.
This get him now or miss out for the next x amount of years never pans out that way and
I completely disagree with your comparison to Casemiro. If I could I’d place a bet that we would get longer out of Casemiro than Liverpool would Caceido who has agreed terms with 3 different teams within the last 7 months.

I haven't seen enough of Caicedo to be fair but he's seemed like a decent player. To be honest the likes of Rice and Caicedo shouldn't be going for fees anywhere close to 100m, never mind in excess of it. What would Salah, De Bruyne, Haaland, Bruno et al be worth now?

Also a Liverpool fan made a good point to me this morning. Why would you pull out of the Bellingham chase because of the costs involved and then turn around and break the British transfer record for Caicedo - who is clearly not on the same level, to be fair not many are.

Why would we have prioritised him over any of the gaps that we didn't have players for at all, when we have Casemiro? When we need a new DM, there will be plenty of other options available.
How long have we been searching for a DM? If it wasn't for a bit of luck with Casemiro deciding he wants to leave Madrid, there's a chance we still wouldn't have one. I hope you are right but just as well next season more strikers might be available than now. We made a decision and need to stick with it.

We're paying 70+ m for a striker doesn't even have 1 very good season in weaker league. It's hard to take high moral ground on this.

It's a PL record breaking transfer fee for a CDM (!) who does not contribute offensively and is not a goal threat either. I'd love for him to replace Casemiro eventually, but that fee is madness. £70m vs £110m isn't nothing.

Why?? It’s not your money or mine. I would have loved to trump them it’s prob about 10m a season if he stays and slots into the team. With a very good chance of sell on for serious ££ given where the market is now and will be going. Fans just haven’t yet caught up with things and by the time they do this deal won’t look anything other than spendy at the time but a solid investment.
Don’t get your panties twisted all I mentioned like everyone else it’s an insane amount of money. Even said if that will get them a trophy or back in top 4 will be money well spent.

I don’t agree, Caicedo is generational. The closest thing to Kante since the man himself. If they win say 2 PL’s and a CL in the next 5 years - which I could easily see, then this will be the signing that everyone talks about as the watershed moment.
I'm talking from experience, so please take this advice; sniffing petrol and drinking Toilet Duck first thing in the morning is a really bad idea.

I don’t think they can sustain the spending needed though. Reason they are outlaying so much this window in my opinion is FSG aren’t too dissimilar to the Glazers and they will sanction heavy spending as getting back into the CL is vital. There’s a lot of ‘will he fulfil his potential’ now in that team and it’s only logical to think some of the younger crop will flop (some will be good). Despite my dislike for him I rate Klopp very highly, he’s proven he can beat a vastly better funded team when backed in consecutive windows but I think they’re at least a season off.

Eh to me this one is obvious, he wanted Real. Liverpool fans can comfort themselves with that sort of talk if they want.

I don't think this is something clubs worry about it too much. If he's highly rated after 2 seasons then Liverpool did well to get him and will easily recoup the money. What's the problem really?

I love how everyone kicks up a fuss when united spend big on a 40 YO Casemiro and a Brazilian unknown Antony.

But when Liverpool break the British record on Djemba Djemba it’s the best thing ever.

Excellent player who fits exactly what they need, but so was Naby Keita. I'd imagine Keita playing in that Brighton team pre Liverpool move would have also stood out.

Would prefer him not to go there but at least they have over paid.

Best thing about this deal is that Brighton will pluck a better replacement straight out of the Amazon for around £2m.

Good!

and honestly im glad, it’s a grim price.

Although we’ll happily spend that sort of fee once we finally have new owners…..

I don't think we should, not in our current position anyway. Casemiro should be good for another 2-3 seasons, we have Mainoo who may be able to step up soon, and I'd rather see us buy a cheaper young midfielder that we could develop (basically Caicedo 2 years ago) while Casemiro is still a guaranteed starter. I don't think a midfield of Casemiro and Caicedo would work that well anyway.

It's definitely a regret that we had been linked heavily to this exact player before Brighton got him and even on here we had people wanting us to get him straight from South America.

It’s definitely a “panic” purchase in a way, their defence is ropey for the style they wish to play. Virgil and co need better protection as they are not the same unit that can defend all by themselves. But this was obvious for some time and the same defensive frailties are there if Caicedo is missing or not in the lineup.

will work out as a good signing, but the fee is absurd. Could have used the fee involved for a new CB and a DM (Lavia)

Possibly because Caicedo is prepared to join them and Bellingham wasn't?

Also the overall cost of Caicedo will likely be much lower than the overall cost of Bellingham.

Devastated. We needed him didn't we?

If he hits the ground running, and if he turns into the best midfielder in the world, and if Mac Allister does the same, and if that other bloke does the same, and Liverpool's defense becomes good again, and their older players like Salah don't have a dip in quality, AND United's defense suddenly turns shite, and our new signings turn out to be shite, and our older players turn to dust... Then it's pretty clear that we've fecked up here and Liverpool will challenge City for the title and we'll be lucky not to get relegated.
Agreed. This season has already turned into a disaster.

Possibly because Caicedo is prepared to join them and Bellingham wasn't?

Well yes, obviously, but it was a very strange tactic to declare they wouldn't be pursuing Bellingham by playing the we don't have enough money card and then to buy an inferior player at a higher cost.

It’s wild the cost of midfielders now. Enzo, Rice, Caicedo all look like good players with lots of growth still to come but the fact that you have to pay over a 100 mil for them is crazy. Bellingham I can somewhat understand as generally he looks cut from a different cloth compared to those 3 in terms of trajectory.

Probably going to take a while to get my head round these fees. Anyway from what I’ve seen looked a decent player if Pool go on to win things over the next 4 years and he is a part in that success who cares about the price.

Man..., the underrating of DM is still there, even though big teams like us, Madrid, Arsenal, and Chelsea/Liverpool are willing to spend fortune for a good DM.

And fee 70m for Hojlund is as madness as 110m for Caicedo.

I guess they can average out the MacAllister price here so it's like 70m each, still mental

It’s crazy how Utd and Liverpool fans are polar opposites. When Utd sign a player he is suddenly a national league level talent in the scousers eyes but when it’s the other way around Utd fans label him the next greatest ever.
