We're in a bit of a difficult situation here, our only long establishing player is clearly no captain material and that's not even bringing up his uncertain future while those who possibly are captain materials have just gotten here (varane,Martinez and casemiro) which in the case of the latter there also exists language concerns.

I don't think there really is an obvious answer here but I guess of i had to pick I'd pick between either casemiro or Martinez, with the former you get the benefit of having a player who could be everywhere on the pitch (im sure he'll get the language thing fixed up in no time) while with the latter you get the benefit of possibly having a longstanding captain in case he becomes a longstay of our team which is quite possible considering his age and quality.

I suppose it bears mentioning that varane would have been my first choice was it not for his less than stellar injury record.

Casemiro as Captain is a horrific shout same as Martinez. Just because you are the best on the team does not mean you automatically should be Captain, anyone with any sort of football knowledge will know that the qualities to be a Captain are different from that of being a quality player

Sadly there isn’t a captain amongst any of the favoured 11.The hated Maguire and Mct are probably closest to it but they won’t be around much longer.

Bruno. I'm not throwing out the years that he's spent leading this club because he lost his head yesterday. We've had plenty of leaders in the past have greater drops in character.

Varane: he is almost 2 years here, and he can have Licha as his guard dog-vice captain.

I don't get the mentions for DDG and Rashford. We know Rashford can sulk, and DDG can't even command his defense.

Don't let the media frenzy and anti-United bias cloud our thinking.

We've had an outstanding season so far and the chemistry amongst the group has been fantastic. This is likely down to Bruno and other members of the staff. The probable reason Bruno was so pissed off yesterday was the capitulation and amateurish performance of the team and himself over 45 minutes. We all have bad days.

the problem with bruno is that he’s not using the power of captaincy for good. my mate works in the wirral tesco and apparently bruno will come in and completely ignore the ticket system at the deli counter and just start ordering loads of slices of billy bear ham and whenever anyone pulls him up on it, he just points at his captains armband that he’s wearing over his coat, then wags his finger. if you say anything else he throws himself to the floor. the store manager then comes over, who’s a rag, and throws you out.

Everything has to be a poll these days. We've become such a pollcentric society.

It should remain with Bruno. 45 minutes of petulance born out of frustration with a shite performance doesn't undo the good work he's put in this season.

If not Bruno it should be Casemiro.

Unless we have a plan to move Bruno on, or push him toward the bench, I think he should stay captain but learn how to do it better. He is a born leader but he loses his head sometimes in a way that no player should but especially not the captain.

He can still improve as a player too. I’d persevere with him.

Tom Heaton, I have not seen him play a bad game in a Utd shirt.

It's embarrasing DDG is even on that list. He can't even command his 6 yards box let alone rally teammates. Varane is a injury prone and won't play every match. Bruno is not big game player.
So that's between Casemiro and Martinez?

Martinez, solely because he’ll be here longer than the rest (hopefully)

Or Casemiro for a year, not the other two

I think Bruno has done a reasonable job as captain.
I prefer my captain to face the pitch in order of preference.

Players that are in the middle of the action should not lead a team because their form can fluctuate and you are left with a player out of form that can’t be bench. The main reason I hate it when I see a striker captaining a team.

The general premise is that the players were "irritated" by his actions, I'm sure the players would've been "irritated" with previous captains on occasion. That doesn't mean you change the captain.
I don’t necessarily agree or disagree with you; I’m playing devil’s advocate because your line of thinking is invalid.

1) A player giving up during a game against their arch rivals, sulking and literally walking about the pitch, pushing an official and not caring anymore and essentially letting a 7-0 drubbing take place. This Captain is the unofficial captain and during his time in the club has won one League Cup.

2) A player hears abusive shouting from the crowd and assaults the fan. This player is widely regarded as the catalyst for transforming the club and returning us to winning ways, and at this point had won two league titles as “THE” man.

3) A player known for their full throttle play style gets sent off a few times. This player is arguably the greatest captain of his generation and never turned in less than a 7/10, and on countless occasions quite literally dragged the team over the line. I can’t count high enough to explain the number of trophies and personal honours he won.

There’s a difference between petulant capitulation, and losing your head. Especially when it can become habit forming. Yeah it was annoying when Keane got sent off, but it’s an entirely different kettle of fish for fans and players.

The poll is stupid, Bruno has earned it and the anti-Bruno narrative amongst supporters and ex players is getting old. Carried the team for 2 years under Ole before the overall crapness of the squad combined with non existant tactics did us in last year. This year has lead us to our first trophy in 6 seasons and a European victory over Barca whilst creating more chances by an absolutely massive margin than anyone else in the squad but we should dump him as Captain because he waves his arms around and moans sometimes? Fecking pathetic.

Still Bruno because:

1. He is always fit
2. He has the right attitude (last night was an anomaly)
3. He is one of our best players
4. He speaks English
5. He has been at the club for longer than all his "competitors" (except for DDG)
6. It pisses off the worst posters on RedCafe

Not every captain can be Keane.
This. Plus he's also a bit younger than Casemiro so a safer bet to be playing if Casemiro goes the way of Matic sometime in the next few seasons.

Odd to put a time limit on it?
Yeah it was weird to say now I’m looking at it.

Maybe he will be here 3 years? I don’t like looking that far ahead, you know what our fans are like with older players and the grief he could be getting by then, especially as captain.

I'd just get rid of the captaincy. Highest tenured player in the starting XI is captain for matchday purpose

And if it became a habit with Bruno, I'd be inclined to agree. Until such a point he's earned the benefit of the doubt.

The thing with the official is an absolute nonsense btw, the official manhandled him far more than he manhandled the official.

Nowhere did I say I expect us to be shit the next few years? Don’t know where you got that from. I actually think we are going to go on a serious run in the league and champions league next year.

I was saying I don’t fancy looking 3 years down the line at an older Casemiro being captain, there’s be no point in that as I doubt he’d play all the time then anyway and no doubt would be getting a lot of shit from people by then. Much safer bet with Martinez.

don’t know what rattled your cage there

Who is the captain of Man City? I just realized I don't know. And I don't care.

Perhaps it is not important who our captain is? Maybe it was important 30 years ago, but not any more.
Exactly.
I just wrote in the Bruno thread that I don’t even remember our captains under SAF after Keane left. I am assuming it must be the senior players Giggs, Neville or Rio and later Vidic.
It is a shared responsibility among the senior players. That’s it.

I assumed you meant we’d be shit as you were suggesting giving Casemiro the armband for 12 months as anything beyond would see him being abused by the fans (so obviously not going well).

Perhaps I’ve misunderstood or that you’re suggesting Casemiro is going to drop off a cliff in 12 months time. Either way I don’t really follow and it seems unnecessarily negative based on yesterdays result and performance.

Absolutely nothing to do with yesterdays result. I didn’t even mention that anywhere, I don’t know where you got that from, that’s you.

And it’s not a massive stretch to say Casemiro won’t be the same player in 3 years time either.

I said to you saying one year looked weird when I read it back, I don’t know how long he’ll be here, I think Martinez is a sure bet to be here longer.

Casemiro? Casemiro was shocking yesterday and wilted in the background whilst we capitulated.

Just shows it was the entire team that fell apart yesterday and we shouldn't judge any of our players on that one game.

Casemiro will be here until the end of his contract then he will likely retire or go back to Brazil.

It's a bit weird the leading candidate to be captain is a guy who doesn't speak English.
