Not saying that 92 stuff is real, but i became an United fan from a German magazine that my father brought back from Hamburg... I had barely watched 2-3 games of football before that, although i played it every day.

In 1992, Man United were relatively unheard of with no real history to speak of so it’s impressive that anyone outside of Greater Manchester had even heard of them let alone supported them.
Tell that to all my dads mates in Tanzania. My dad was the lone liverpool supporter (wanted to be different). All his mates were mad United supporters. This was in the 70s.

Edit - no white text but assume you were joking?

I wonder if there ever would be a time when every single Premier League club has some sort of Middle Eastern financial backing.

Why is it so difficult to believe that a foreign child who lived and was educated in the UK in the 90s would support United?
Because it’s not him saying it. Because it’s a PR firm. Because it’s a sportswash enterprise. Because Quatar and PR polishing a turd. Because treatment of migrant workers with many dead. Because treatment of women there. Because treatment of gays. Because cringe. Really it’s irrelevant. It’s fecking PR

My point was less about a Qatari kid watching English football, but supporting a club with relatively little success over the recent past (back then).

I had no idea about that English school thing, though
We finished second in 91/92 and won the league in 92/93. So if he was in England and got into supporting one club that year like 10 year olds are prone to do we were one of the best sides around in England. Plus obviously the club was already hugely supported back then too with wonderful history. Clearly it is state backed and it’s likely the whole 1992 thing is PR creative license but I think the journalist is being disingenuous with his tone and by making out it’s so inconceivable.

I refer you to this information and ask you to prove otherwise. @Plant0x84 .

Clearly he can not afford the cash to get Utd outright, asset rich but cash poor type of person?. How does he say he will finance the takeover?.

Personally I think he's bluffing about buying us, I don't think he can afford us and will be more of the same but with a more palatable face to some simple people who are easily led by the media.

We are more than likely already there

None of that has any bearing on a foreign child in the UK in the 80/90s, supporting United does it?

Much more inclined to believe him than a Chelsea season ticket holder.

It will be ‘old money’ in a hurry (in terms of decades). Just wait for like Reading showing up doing a City 2.0 owned by some kid making a killing in Roblox or whatever. ;)

Again, not that it matters but if this guy is claiming to have been United fan since 92 and has been to OT, he must surely have some pictures or videos at OT or in a United shirt (before this season). Maybe we will see another picture leaked but if he's making it all up, just seems a bit weird to be honest.

let me add to this. I’m Norwegian, 37. I have an uncle, who is 50 or so. Biggest United fan. And has been since early 90s.
he grew up in a classic Norwegian coastal village, poor family, 6 siblings. Remote as feck. No TV. But he had radio, and he had magazines. He has several notebooks where he has tracked and noted each PL round in detail since that time. Hand written. From radio updates. Results, players, updated table. Every round. It’s insane

Got my first United kit from him in 94. The 94/95.

So. Yeah. United was hardly an unknown quantity in the early 90s. Club has a rich history and has always been relevant, even abroad.

That's funny.
I don't know why exactly, but all the Faroese fans were members of the Norwegian supporters branch. Myself included. We were sent the magazine every month (which were in black and white for the longest time for some reason).

SJR has fudged the first statement after the bid.
Has media clowns scrambling around to give us more information but comes across like there’s something being hidden.

The feedback from Nice is that he made a bunch of promises and went back on them.

The communication so far from the Sheik has been clear and concise.

At this point it’s clear the UK media have a bias towards SJR but his comments and comms have been nothing short of incompetent and muddled which reminds me of our current owners.

Again Qatar must win the bidding , I hope they do.
Yeah I agree. I really wanted Sir Jim as our owner before but now I'm not so sure. I think it would be foolish and risky to turn down Qatar's offer in all honesty.

What the PR spin and the 92 thing shows is that they are—to some extent—anxious to bring fans aboard. Sportswash demands good PR, not protests. This is an opportunity—one and maybe only—to say no to this. You can imagine the brainstorming. Can we take the most loved aspect, glory days, and tap into that? It says here in Google ‘Class of 92’. Okay let’s get 92 in the name. Now let’s get a story to go with the bye line. From the corner of the room, the new guy says nervously ‘I have an idea’. Right; we need to tie Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani to the club, and make him sound less like a lawyer and entitled son, and more like a down-to-earth, bona fide football supporter. There’s a pic here of him in the shirt….

It seems to me he’s been handpicked by Qatar to front this bid. There must be lots of rich Qatari United fans - so I’d be pretty shocked if he wasn’t a fan. I think it’s likely the 1992 thing is creative license but I’d be amazed if he wasn’t actually a supporter.

What? Seriously? I know there’s a lot of young kids on the Caf, but this is patently false.

That would be my suspicion, they've just picked someone who happens to be a United fan (maybe not since 1992 but who knows?) to be the face of this thing in the hope that it will impact the views of some fans.

Yeah think the 92 date was just a convenient year to say but agreed, would be a bizarre move if he isn't actually a supporter.

I agree. If he was raised in Britain then he could easily have been a fan since the 90s I don't doubt that but the whole 1992 thing just seems like perfect PR to me. Especially when you look at what they included in the statement about their beliefs on youth. Also, the "sources" close to him couldn't confirm much about the guy except the stuff we want to hear.

Sorry but why would I know that?
Because football is the most popular sport for the past 100 years and united is the one of the most successful clubs in the world in the past 100 years. United in the 60's was the most popular, despite the downfall in the 70's they kept winning trophies (FA cup against Liverpool in 1977), then in the 80's it started again by winning multiple FA cups which the FA-cup final was a popular TV event to air in the ME and Asia. I know a united fan who is still living in the ME who started supporting united just because of the world cup after falling in love with Bryan Robson. For me, yes, it is difficult to understand how would anyone be suspicious of united popularity before 1992.

I started supporting United in 92. Don’t see anything wrong with that.

I started somewhere around 90/91. First match I remember watching on the telly was the Cup Winner's Cup Final and was hooked after Sparky's incredible finish.

It could well be PR but I'm not sure why anyone's making a big deal of that part. There's enough to moan about.

If it's a choice between SJR and Qatar, it has to be Qatar I'm afraid.

We'll all be complaining two years from now if SJR takes over - we'll just be facing the same issues we have had with the Glazers but to a lesser degree. We need someone who clears the debt which we shouldn't have in the first place and to be able to spend our own cash which the club already generates.

I know United were popular. I just don’t know how I’m supposed to know they were popular in the ME before 92, when we hadn’t been successful for a long time.I literally know feckall about the ME culture back then. I would guess it’s the same for most Brit’s too unless they have some connection to the region.
