Jesse Lingard

Jesse Lingard is known to actually be a very down to earth and humble guy,

it's just his online antics rub certain people up the wrong way, especially to the grumpy toads that dwell in here.

Undoubtedly an excellent player who is a true professional, will have kept himself in shape despite not having a club this pre season.

No doubt this will be a brilliant signing for Forest, and a massive statement.
I'm looking for the white text :wenger:

It's a massive statement that Forest is looking to take it bending over if they pay him 180k a week.

I doubt his wage demands stay that high once the season starts and team budgets are already decided. If Forest insists on getting him, I would just wait until October and he's more desperate to play somewhere. He's not worth that much money, especially on a newly promoted team

180k/w is fair but
Make Jlingz pay £1 every time he gives the ball away. By the end of season, they'll be rich.
I don't want to live in a world where Jesse Lingard on 180k p/w is 'fair'.

Worst thing is, he's probably a player ten have would have liked to have in the squad.

His quick passing and off the ball movement would have slotted right in. Ah well.

There is no "worst thing" in regards to Lingard leaving. Only positives.

He'll be better off at west ham i reckon, Nottingham could potentially find themselves in a relegation scrap so better get away from all that.

£180k a week is obviously huge for a footballer that hasn’t really done all that much in his career but as an NBA fan I find it curious how far ahead the salaries over there are compared to Premiee League, best paid league in football. It is basically about $12m a year which would get you a rotation caliber player in basketball.

Don't they play more than double the amount of games compared to football, while having to maintain a squad of about half the size? Also, I guess the franchise model helps. In the English league system, doesn't some of the TV get spread around to lower leagues? That is certainly not a problem in the NBA, and the teams are guaranteed of not being relegated, so have less concerns about losing revenue and being stuck with bigger contracts.

Most of them play 82 games season, the ones that make it into the playoffs will get the odd 4 up to about 25 extra games so yeah, they play more… though the season is much shorter and they could be off from April till late October if they don’t make the playoffs. Also the best players will usually play no more than 75 regular season games anyway. Compared to your top Premier League player that could easily have a season of 50+ games with international call ups on top of that, not really a massive difference (games are much shorter too). Team size is 15 plus a couple of poorly paid part-time players, again I guess it’s not far from the usual PL squad of about 17-18 senior players and a few youngsters.

If a club is willing to pay that what's the issue?

He's a recent England international, proven premier League player, works hard, good technical player, bags of experience.

On a free transfer with high wages and no doubt a relegation clause in there what's Forest got to lose?

It would make him one of the best paid players in the whole league and would break the wage structures of all but the top few clubs.
Any club paying that money to a player of his limited ability would be insane.

Pity the club that signs him.

If Lingard swans into a club full of championship players earning over 3x the next highest earner (not counting Henderson), and acts anything remotely like how he did at United, his new team mates and the fans will end up chasing him out.

The salary being mentioned isn't THAT crazy when you consider there's no transfer fee. It's about £37.5m total over four years, which is about the same as signing someone for a transfer fee of £20m and wages of £75k on a week on a four year contract, which would attract less scorn/surprise/headlines. Being a free agent puts players in quite a strong negotiating position and inevitably there will be more such deals in the coming years. Imagine for example if Grealish had been out of contract when he joined City...£100m on top of his 6 year £300k a week contract, would be equal to about £620k a week. In addition, if any of them had the nous to cut out the blood sucking agents who convince them that the best deal involves the club giving the agent several million on top, the salary that a high level player could obtain would be eye watering.

Players wouldn’t get the same high wages without agents. Agents are there as professional negotiators to make sure their client gets the best deal possible, something the vast majority of players wouldn’t have the nous to do.

I can’t help but feeling you’re projecting the resentment you hold for him just a touch here!

No I'm projecting what will happen when a load of men earning £10-30k a week are suddenly forced to share a dressing room with a £120k+/week manchild more interested in filming tiktok vids than playing football. Especially if results are bad and they're fighting for survival.

How can Forest afford to pay him £200K per week. I know there is money sloshing around in football, but that is ridiculous money.

So unless you were saying exactly the same about Eriksen at Brentford last year (and I’m going to go out on a limb and guess you weren’t), then your whole point is predicated on your assumption that his behaviour in the dressing room (which you know nothing about) will negatively affect the Forest players (whom you know nothing about). Sorry, but your argument is entirely centred around your own negative preconceptions, which was my original point.

There is a crazy amount of money automatically paid just for being in the PL. signing big players like this for no fee is actually doable for any club due to the insane tv money. It might even prove to be very smart business if he keeps them up for another year. They’ll definitely need a few more signings to stay up though. I hope they sign Garner with an easily achievable buy back (just for us)

180k for a player who careless about football nowadays is a catastrophic way for a newly promoted team like Forest to introduce themselves back in the league, I'll bet anyone here that JL would down tool at the first sight of adversity, next he'll be leaking information to the press on how the forest dressing room is in disarray and how his teammate never welcomed him and so on.

I'll be watching Forest closely if he moves there that's for sure, I can't imagine this marriage ending well.

People are quoting £180k but it's likely to be something like a £10m sign on fee + £80k a week for a 2 year contract, which works out as equivalent to £180k. If they paid United £10m and paid him that wage no one would care.

More on more players are running down contacts to get that sign on money.

What a terrible waste of money for a painfully mediocre footballer with the mentality of an adolescent. Has Woodward joined Forest?

Except we do know all about his behaviour off the pitch, his lack of effort and lack of professionalism in general. From multiple sources including the man(child) himself.

He's not got limited ability... He went to a top 6 club and was one of their best players and not that long ago was an England starter at the World Cup. That's a pretty good coup for a newly promoted team.

He was one of the fittest Utd players during lockdown (with McT) and also was clearly in good shape at WH after not playing for half a season here. It's not like people like Shaw, Rooney etc who would need a mini pre season to hit some form. Footballers only need to train a few hours a day, eat well and rest. Being a prat on social media isn't the same as going on a bender and getting pissed.

Our very own Scholesy came on Cameras to say things Lingard had told him about the United dressing room, isn't that enough to measure up his character? United even made a statement about players leaking information to the press and made it clear two(my guess is Lingard and Pogba) of those suspected of such act were no more at the club, what does that tell you about him as a person?

He'll be motivated to do well there, I would expect similar performances to what he did at West Ham. He's not really United quality and the relationship has obviously soured but there's definitely a good player in there and I think he'll do well.

And like most people are saying - the salary is just a result of him not costing them anything.

I think some of the fee could be related to his social media presence and profitability, also being a united player probably helped. Other than that unless they think they can build a team around him then they may aswell pissed it up the wall.

It's really unfair to compare the entire NBA with the premier league, given the NBA covers a huge market in some massive cities, and England is just really rather small. Dallas, who have the 8th largest payroll for the NBA, the DFW area has a population of 7.66mm, the 8th largest payroll in the PL is Leicester. The greater Leicester area has a population of 355,000. But even if you just count the PL, the numbers stack up favourably. However, if you take the top 20 payrolls in the NBA vs the top 20 payrolls across the European leagues (about 14 of which are from the PL), you get a much closer comparison in terms of population and market size.

With that said, the average franchise NBA payroll for the top 20 is around $159.6mm this year. Taking an average roster size of 15 players that gives an average salary of around $10.64mm per player. For European football, the average club payroll for last year was $255.04mm, about $100mm more than your average NBA franchise. This is because clubs have to keep much larger squads to be competitive across multiple competitions, and obviously need to field 11 players at any one time. Even so, the average player salary was $10.2mm, only marginally lower than the NBA despite carrying much larger squads. Lingard getting $12mm a year from a team coming up from the second tier, is almost the equivalent of an NBA player getting $12mm a year from a G-League team. For any club in the top half of the table, Lingard is at best a rotation calibre player, and for anyone in the top 6-7, completely surplus to requirements.

There's also much bigger pay disparity in the NBA. Somebody like Steph Curry makes $49mm a season, while the lowest paid player on the warriors roster makes $550K. In fact Curry makes $10mm more per season individually, then 75% of the warriors entire roster combined. But that's just all pay structures in the US.

Do you support Nottingham Forest? If not why do you care so much how much he’s getting paid and what he will bring to the dressing room at another club you don’t even support?

He doesn’t even know you and see how stressed you are about him even after he’s no more a United player.
