I honestly don't care if he is signed or not, our main problem has been in the middle of the park, still we haven't signed anyone in that position to rectify that problem, I do wonder what ETH is thinking spending £45m on this lad, he better be the next Maldini or I'll be the first to be critical of him ignoring our engine room.
That rather points to your daftness, expecting a 45 million pound signing to be the next Maldini.

I can't get excited about this. Not that I don't rate him but because I don't think CB is a position we should prioritise.

If it changes the way we play out from the back then it excites me to be honest. I also understand where you’re coming from though.

People are overly worried about Lisandro Martinez's height. ETH knows his strengths and weaknesses so he knows which positions he can play him in depending on the opponent.

He will play CB in games where the opponents favour speed and pressing in terms of their forward line while playing as a fullback or DM in games where the opponent has a long ball approach. He could also play as a sweeper while there are 2 tall CBs to cover the long balls as part of a 3 man defence. Many possibilities on the way ETH can use him, which is why he wants him signed.

I was hoping EtH could unlock value out of the players that we all know can do better like Bailly rather than spending this kind of money on an Ajax centre back and Feyenoord left back. I’m not sure if any other top manager coming into the club would spend 60m in this way. We have left bs is and centre back is that our manager should be paid to get a tune out of.

Martinez can play in midfield and I don't know where you've been, but we've been strongly linked to De Jong and Eriksen, who will most likely be United players by next week. Technically, that's a brand new midfield. To add to that, we have Van de Beek back, Garner, Savage and Iqbal.

I’m assuming he will play midfield in a lot of the tougher games. There’s just no way ETH says that Maguire is captain and drops him, nor will he play Maguire over Varane on the right.

The only other scenario I can see is that we have a buyer for Lindelof.

Not a priority position to fix but definitely one of the key areas that needs fixing for sure. We don't know if Maguire is going to be as poor as he was last season and Varane just couldn't stay fit and get a run of games. That then leaves us with Lindelof who isn't a top quality CB and Bailly who I really like but is spending half the season in the treatment room...

Because of that we definitely need a left-sided CB who is relatively injury free and good at playing out from the back in order to suit ETH's style of play. With Martinez having played under ETH, it should hopefully make his adaptation period a bit more smoother. While I haven't seen too much of Martinez, from what I have seen, he would appear to improve us defensively but also going forward and being that key link between defence and attack, which has been a weakness of ours for several years and hopefully Martinez can change that!

Ten Hag wants a left-footed CB. I do think we will need to sell one of our other CBs after we bring Martinez in, we'll be too stacked. I would personally bin Maguire but it will be Lindelof or Bailly.

Can we send lindelof to Spain in part exchange? They’d love him over there, like a more passive version of Pau Torres

He's constantly injured though

Wonder how much we'd get for Bailly, Jones and Tuanzebe combined?
I think a few teams would pay good money for Bailly. Jones and Tuanzebe will be difficult to shift and will probably just see out their contracts.

Probably about £25m maximum. All have bad injury records and have never held a place in the starting 11. Bailly will go for between £10m-15m, Axel around £7-10m (with the Pereira deal as context) and Jones I think we will have to let him go for free or at best a nominal fee of under £1m.

Agree, it’s been such a strange window. LB wasn’t a priority position. Eriksen is obviously a good player but again AM shouldn’t have been a priority this window. We should have identified the weakest areas in the starting XI and upgraded them one by one, I’m not sure what our current strategy is.

Given all our CBs are 28+, i like getting a left footed ball playing CB who is 24. Have to get rid of Jones, Bailly and Tuanzebe for sure, but they aren't good depth to have. They're useless generally over a season anyway. Would much rather have a group of Lindelof, Maguire, Varane and add Martinez as the left footer there.

Axel wouldn't be difficult at all. He's still just 25 and one of the few players in the team with low wages that most low level clubs can afford.

It’s been another shambles of a window as usual. You only have to look at the travelling tour squad to see that.

There is no strategy, Murtough and Arnold were not prepared for this window and are letting ETH pick his own targets as a result (something he was never particularly good at, Overmars was the recruitment mastermind at Ajax).

For a centre half on average of 90 mins, He has more headed clearances and more long range passes in the eridivisie and also he was awarded Ajax player of the season too. We need players like this who are creative and find spaces every game. currently we don’t have CBs excelling in creative side of it except maybe varane on few games.
With regards to liverpool victory, it was proper “impress the manager” performance by some senior players so I don’t buy that.

We should seal this deal soon.

Price also isn't the worst when you look at Koulibaly at 31 costing 40m and the 300k a week wages or whatever. We need a younger squad that is comfortable on the ball but aggressive off of it, and this is a step towards that.

look...we have 3 CB's that can't stay healthy and none of them are left footed

It's a big amount of money but we absolutely need a better balance in the back with left footed CB that can pair with Varane or Maguire.

I don't see any chance that ETH brings this guy in to sit him on the bench and not be a starter

From the little that I have seen of Martinez, I've been impressed, definitely a player that fits comfortably into the Ten Hag style of play.
I have a sneaky feeling he might be played in Midfield, what are your opinions on that?
I would be really surprised if EtH played him in midfielf. He tried that at Ajax, but concluded that he was best at LCB.

He will, he's look to getting people that have a good first touch and can pass in the spine of his team (Eriksonn, De jong and Martinez) which form a nice Triangle in the middle he likes so much. This would mean will be able to advance the ball up the pitch in a manner he is accustomed to meaning we will finally be able to create decent chances for the forwards.

The likes of Martial, Rashford, Shaw, Dalot and Sancho are all going to be miles better.

We have 5 first team Centre backs and unfortunately the two worst at defending are the only two that aren't a liability when it comes to injuries, they also aren't that great offensively.

ETH knows what he want's and knows what he's doing. People have short memories on here, it wasn't long ago he was destroying the best team in Europe 4-0.

EDIT: I didn't count Tuanzabe as he can barely get a kick when out on loan in his mid 20's so I don't think he is even an option.

I have my doubts about Martinez but the idea is that Chris Wood doesn't see the ball much and we limit crosses as much as possible.
Yes but that’s wishful thinking, this is the PL and not even Pep is that good nor naive to think he can impose such control.
