He already has, and that was in the Dutch league, didn't go brilliantly. He might play there in emergency situations, but I don't believe he can do it successfully in the PL.
Wish we could sticky that somewhere. Not even ETH thinks he's capable in midfield

Haven't followed any news this summer. Anyone care to explain whether we're close to making more additions?

Our only realistic incomings seems to be either Dutch or from Ajax. Most probably both.
ETH seems only interested in players who could fit his style. In addition we're out of the CL making it hard to attract top players.

I think ETH is building a foundation, hopefully next year we'll look further afield

We'd be completely bolloxed by #1

We can't sell any of them.

Also an exchange plus cash rarely happens.
We could also sell the Stretford end for 150million, plus another 50mill for Carrington and then buy Mbappe.

And you an expert for modern day footballers fee? The club makes enough money to pay this why would it matter to anyone how much we pay for a player we want? It’s like we stealing for the kid piggy bank to fund these transfers
You need to be an idiot to not realize that how much we pay for said player actually affects our budget and our ability to strengthen in other positions. And besides that overspending on players is one of the biggest problems we have which contributes to our failed post SAF culture and management. We have a 50m pounds midfielder in Fred who can’t pass and is worth jack shit, 50m DVB who we sent on loan and than you have advocates for a 50m deal for a CB who is pretty much unproven in the biggest leagues and on top of that he is a midget coming in the most physical league in the world. Yeah not rocket science Einstein.

It's not as clear cut as that. He said that Martinez didn't fit into Ajax's 'different interpretation' of midfield in 2021

He is an example of what my statement about more than eleven basic players is based on. Only its competition is enormous. He can play left back, left central defender and left controlling midfielder.

He has good technique, overview on the ball, dueling power, but he has less walking ability, for example. Our midfield has been given a different interpretation, which means that Martínez mainly has to compete with [Daley] Blind and [Nicolo] Tagliafico.

But that he was a good midfielder in 2020
At the beginning of the (2019-20) season, we were looking for a brain for central midfield. We knew Martinez had played there but could he do it in Ajax’s system? We tried him there and we saw good things.

Basically, it's going to come down to whether we need him to have 'walking ability' alongside De Jong. Whatever the hell that means. If it's 'wandering ability', we already know De Jong is a master at that in EtH's own estimation. So a Marinez+De Jong axis could potentially be the exact 'interpretation' the manager is after.

Why use the comparison yourself then? Quite bizarre.

Whatever he does you’ve decided in your own mind he won’t be able to play in the PL.
Don’t be laughable. You mentioned Martinez performance against Haaland and Nunes and how he played CL football. The truth is he is very very unproven and considering our needs, too expensive.

I do think that he is no fit for the PL. And it’s not scandalous, he is short and it will hurt any backline playing in the PL.

Martinez can't be worse than Mc Tominay or Fred in midifield surely..

In talks about an ambassadorial role.

Not the worst idea, fair enough if hes no longer required on the coaching side but leaving all that experience go to waste seems wrong somehow. Theres bound to be a role at the club for him that suits everyone.

Steve Mcmahon effectively renders him redundant. There's no use for him.

Put some sunglasses or blacked-out googles on Phelan and he looks like Butterball from Hellraiser.

Not being funny but I'm not sure how that experience really translates to being useful anymore. We have a new manager and coaching staff who are drastically different to everything that Phelan is used to. Mclaren is already there for the English/PL link and as a face Ten Hag trusts

Really not funny. I‘m not sure how old you are but experience is way more than just the knowledge you‘ve aquired and applied in your career. Experience is an underused resource in all walks of life.

Is this thread meant to be just tweets, or also discussion? I came here for today's news, but don't see anything.

100%

Phelan's experience doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with the football side of things.

Manchester United is a club unlike any other. Few can match our size. Even fewer can match our level of commercialisation. And none can match our centrality to the British media.

What Phelan could give EtH is an insight into all of that. Managing Ajax off the pitch is completely different to managing the juggernaut that is Manchester United.

If the board ask EtH to delay the start of training for a sponsor unveiling photo shoot, does he agree to it? Should he say 'yes' to Sir Bobby but 'no' Cantona? Can he refuse to use use a particular hotel because they're further from the away ground even though they sponsor the team?

Manchester United does things differently and with a unique set of off the pitch priorities. Having somebody on your staff who's been there done that could be invaluable. In time, he'll learn all of it himself. But he can't afford to be making avoidable mistakes, especially in the early days.

You havn't missed anything. Signed a prospect LB, rumours about Eriksen soon to be announced and then just tedious bs rumours about Frenkie de Jong every single day.

He's looked really sour ever since Ole got the boot and Carrick was put in as temp manager. He couldn't even hide his contempt when we scored a goal. Yeah, time to get rid. Wouldn't be surprised he was the source of some of the leaks.

I considered putting this in the England & Scotland Tweets thread, but I feel like it has a strong relation with our pursuit of de Jong. Thanks to both @Rolaholic and @Berbaclass in the Frenkie de Jong thread:

Laporta and Mendes seal strategy for Bernardo Silva

In their last meeting, the president and the agent discussed how to deal with the transfer in case De Jong leaves.
  • Selling 10% of the TV rights (for ~€200m) made the Kessié and Christensen registrations possible.
  • Nico wants to stay at Barcelona but is open to loan move if he can't get regular minutes.
    • Marseille is a possible loan destination.
  • If Barcelona earn 70-80 million Euros guaranteed from de Jong's sale, then Barcelona will pursue Bernardo Silva.
    • Bernardo Silva's already informed City about his Barcelona desire.
  • Manchester City want close to €100m for Bernardo Silva.
    • Unaffordable for Barcelonca as part of the de Jong money would be used to fund Lewandowski's transfer
    • Selling the remaining 15% of the TV rights (to earn ~€200m+ more) will help Barcelona.
  • Mendes and Laporta agreed on the following:
    • Barcelona will pay the €100m over 2-3 seasons (after selling both de Jong and the remainder of the TV rights)
    • Bernardo Silva's potential salary will be in line with the squad's salary restrictions (don't expect him to be overpaid).
    • Mendes will not meet up with City's representatives until de Jong is sold.

Awks for Ronnie when he has to start the first game of the season for us

Why does Bernardo Silva want to go to Barcelona and why are City letting him?

To call myself a commerce novice is very generous. Still, even with my limited knowledge of the subject Barcelona's "business plan" seems asinine and short-sighted if I am being kind.
