Thank feck for FFP, finally seeing some worth from it now. Would Di Maria be (probably) United bound if FFP wasn't in effect? Very likely he'd already be a City or PSG player by now. They'd have splashed the cash long before we'd even considered the possibility of preparing an enquiry about him.

And any deal we do for ADM is going to be very heavy on the add ons. My guess around £45m up front, with anything up to £15m on performance and achievement based add-ons. Worth every penny.

Yep. And given United's resources perhaps LVG will stop kvetching about overseas tours-which keep sponsors sweet.

He play wide for Spain too. As you said it doesn't matter where he plays as long as the system is right.

Indeed. Ask Shaw to provide width, Mata to come inside and swap with Rooney and this formation will work with time.

352 now would be ridiculous waste of talent.

Most of his best games last season, he played from CM, what are the chances LvG wants him *as* a big CM signing?

I'd have imagined such a scenario to be likely had we not just got Herrera, tbh.

He could do a great job for us in CM. I was always impressed with him playing central midfield for Madrid last season. A position I didn't expect him to do so well in. His energy and work rate are exceptional, and he just seemed everywhere at all times, both on and off the ball, like an unorthodox box to box midfielder. He was winning the ball back and create chances, as you'd expect form a box to boxer. I still think he'll be brought in to play on the wing though, as Van Gaal seemed to mention in a presser that he doesn't have any top class wingers, and name-dropped Di Maria in the same instance. But it's good for rotation and versatility, knowing he can play a few positions. Perhaps even a wing back too.

50M pounds for Di Maria! madness...

Hopefully he will quickly adapt and we are going to change to a 433 formation
Definitely one of the top 10 players in the world, you have to pay big for these kinds of players.

Di Maria played in a 3 man midfield usually shadowing Ronaldo on the left. He was slightly more advanced than the other midfielders.

:lol::lol:

We've had shite wingers for years and yet there's still people moaning about Di Maria and his cost etc.
can't we all just be happy that we are signing a world class player

With Di Maria we'd have a large varied squad. I think we'd see a variety of systems and styles depending on the opposition and no particular system as such.

LVG says himself the formation is flexable.

Who cares how much he costs? We're rich, bitch! Plus he's probably a top 5 player based on last season

Why is it madness? He's a top quality player that we've been craving and something we've missed since Ronaldo. He was also arguably Madrid's most important player last year after Ronaldo. Fit him anywhere and he plays well. He was even made a midfielder and he played well. 17 assists in La Liga in 34 games. The highest in the league. He's worth every penny in my book.

This is amazing. I honestly did not see this one coming. I'm always up for grabbing one of the best players in the world, even if our team should have other priorities.

One good season in a team full of stars and for you he is now top 10 in the world?

He comes to the right place to prove it then.
It's not just one season though (although it was by far his best), he's been consistently brilliant for years.

One good season? Okay then.

He was arguably their best player last season. Ronaldo got the headlines because of the continuation of his ridiculous goal record but he'd never finish those chances if the likes of Di Maria weren't putting them on a plate for him every week - something he's done over 4 seasons, not just the one. He's had a solid career with them but just happened to be noticeably better last season than in his previous three, largely because of the role change where he was essentially playing a dual-role.

Couldn't give a flying feck how much he costs. We obviously have more pressing issues but he's a world class game changer, and they don't come around very often.

Very good player, one of the worst divers on the planet. Solves very little either.

He solves our habit of starting the worst wingers to ever play at the club on the wings. By a long mile too, as he's world class. I agree that he doesn't solve everything, but our wings have become almost as bad as our CM. Under everybody's noses too.

The wide options are as bad, if not worse. Adnan was our best winger last season and many believe he isn't even a winger!

The issue is we've needed midfield reinforcements for so long that people are turning a blind eye to how bad our wings are - even suggesting that shoehorning our over subscribed #10 cohort in wide areas solves that problem, and the club should focus on CM and CM only.

Fact is, in 2014 forgetting midfield issues circa 2010, we need BOTH.

Laugh all you want, but it wouldnt surprise me if LVG tried him as a WB - he has the workrate to be excellent in that role, like an improved, two-footed version of Valencia, with some technique.

i guess desperate times calls for desperate measures.

still... bad precedent.
How is it desperate?
Valencia - Shit
Young - Shit
Zaha - Won't/Can't step up.
Januzaj - potential to be class.
Nani - gone

We have no pace in our starting line up, we have players who can't/won't cross. I mean this is Angel Di Maria, world class, fast, skillful intelligent footballer.

You say desperate? Excuse me but we are fecking desperate.

I think Di Maria was a bigger priority for us than another CM. Reason? We have a lot of tidy footballers but nobody with pace and penetration to unlock well-organised teams. I'd like to see us go to a 4.3.3 with a midfield 3 of Fletch, Herrera and Mata and a front 3 of Di Maria, Rooney and RVP. Januzaj can come on off the bench regularly in that team for any one of the front three.

I don't get people complaining about the fees we pay. It used to annoy me, but we unfortunately have to accept the fact that you need to spend top dollar to get top players.

Exactly. The two positions don't cancel each other out. Why should we not go for a winger just because we need a CM? We've obviously got the budget, and seems we're willing to spend.
One or two more signing on top of of Di Maria and we're set. Sneaky title challenge if we end up with a very good midfielder after buying Di Maria too.

Careful mate, some people here won't be able to put food on their table because United are spending too much on Di Maria

Exact same people that are moaning because we are not spending. I'd frigging love for United to spend £200m this window

Probably more didn't want Ozil to leave. He was the one who made Ronaldo better apparently and their Crown Jewel. They even chanted at Bale's presentation -

http://metro.co.uk/2013/09/02/dont-...fans-hijack-gareth-bale-presentation-3947015/

And Ozil was 24 and younger along with 14 assists and 9 goals the season before. In hindsight would you pay 60 million for him ?

I think Di Maria upto 50 million given our desperation makes sense. Beyond that is a bit silly territory. Anyway, this is all speculative right now so would leave it at that. I very much doubt that Daniel Taylor tweet is true.

Would care less about it if we had enough money left for a quality CM signing.

CM is the obvious hole as has been mentioned ad nauseum , but di Maria has had a great season for Madrid and is tailor made for united in a way young and Valencia never were. Given the option of €60mil for di maria now and hope we "have enough left" for an awesome cm or not sign di Maria and save the €60mil so we definitely have enough for a cm we might not sign, I think I know which is preferable.

No complaints with this at all. About time we get some actual quality.

Van Persie
Mata Rooney Di Maria
Herrera New DM
Shaw CB CB Rafael
De Gea

CBs picked based on form, Mata drifting from out wide - he did that for Chelsea and Valencia, he is capable of that as long as you don't ask him to play like a classic winger would.

433 is impossible.

See this is where I think we would be stronger potentially with januzaj out wide, mata central and one of rooney/rvp leading the line. I think with those players out wide mata can get more out of them than rooney/rvp can dropping off and them him and the overall 4 would function better. But would expect both Rooney and RVP to play. Still either set up would be very nice to have.
