Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

I want LvG to scare the board into buying players. I think his totally nonchalant reaction to the loss on saturday speaks volumes. Moyes would have looked close to tears like he often did after embarrassing defeats, literally apologetic, but LvG just walked off and said it was inevitable, he's made the best team that he can out of the players, it's now up to Woody to bring the people in. He even said that the players played as well as they could and we still lost to a supposedly lesser club. So he's literally thrown the ball into the board's court, they should now know that they need to buy some new faces or face a serious decline. All very well played by LvG if I'm right with this.
The thing that gets me is that even after a disastrous match he seems so in control and cool about everything.

You don't think he actually believed that do you? He said that due to talking to the media not because it was true. We clearly didn't play as well as we could/should have done. Mata, Rooney and Herrera were under par, Fletcher had an extremely off day and we made mistakes that we hadn't been making for the majority of our pre-season.

As much as we need players, we clearly didn't perform to the levels we're capable of on Saturday which was the ultimate disappointment.

Well no, all of our best players were just not getting into the groove of things well, but i got the impression it was like him saying "we're not gonna get much better than this without new players".

Well he knew and we knew that we needed new players. That was without a doubt. But the performance on Saturday wasn't indicative of what LvG has been doing in training with the existing players. We had a few youngsters out there in Lingard and Blackett and they performed better than the so-called experienced ones. They let him and the fans down with their timid display. He'll be extremely disappointed that we have seemingly gone backwards even from a few weeks ago when we were moving and keeping the ball at will against Inter, Madrid, Roma, Liverpool etc.

This from the LVG biography, about his approach to scouting and targets from his time at Ajax :-

'There was no policy. Now at Ajax we have our own network. Whenever we receive a tip about a player, we take a closer look. All the data are put into the computer system. Based on those data he is assigned a ranking, for various positions. For one position he may end up being number one ; for another position number three. Every candidate is evaluated in four areas: technique, insight, personality, and speed - "TIPS" we call that. '

Contracts of Anderson, Cleverley, Fletcher & Carrick are running out at the end of the season. Which leaves us with Fellaini & Herrera as CM's. Maybe Kagawa & Powell too, if you want to count them. He probably won't give any of them a new contract unless they show they deserve it. Times of copinage are hopefully over.

As a guess I'll say:
Anderson - gone.
Cleverley - tough but there were rumours of a contract extension so I'll say he'll stay (I don't know why though.)
Fletcher - I don't think LvG will want him to have another deal, sorry Fletch.
Carrick - I think he'll be re-signed. Just a one year extension though.

Unless Cleverley shows something on the pitch as long as Carrick is out, I can't see him staying, at least not rightfully.

Squeeky bum time.. will he say that our business is done for this window?

For all we know LvG's said to Ed he wants to fill the team with potential and is doing a Wenger. Vermalaen may be the exception.

Of course the question is where are the other players?

Currently reading the new LvG biography by Maarten Meijer and I thought to type up the following portion of his time in AZ. The information on preparation and feedback is very fascinating.

LvG quotes in bold.

'It's a footballing philosophy more than a system,' Van Gaal explained. 'A system depends on the players you have. I have played with a 4-3-3 with Ajax, 2-3-2-3 with Barcelona and I can play 4-4-2 with Z. I'm flexible. The philosophy stays the same, though. The coach is the team's focal point, so preparing the tactical formation is essential. Every player must know where he has to be and support his teammates. You need the right mindset, and it depends on how the players see the coach and viceversa. The coach is the focal point of the team but you need to have an open mind, and so do all the players. everyone needs to work together to achieve a common goal. Preparing your tactical formation is essential. This is a sport played by 22 men, and there are 11 opponents out there playing as a team. Each individual needs to know who has to beat and be there to support his teammates.'

One of the things van Gaal did at AZ was to dramatically expand his management team - its size nearly doubled during his tenure. Not only was the medical contingent increased, but significant attention was also paid to the technological side of things: 'I am always working on knowledge management, and I want people in my staff who complement me. I consider measurement very, very important, but I cannot do everything myself. That's why I use a physical trainer. What I see in those boys, he confirms. The same thing applies to my PowerPoint presentations and game analyses. Those are made by a computer guru and my assistants'.

In van Gaal's training, the primary objective is education, the learning process by which players improve. This was of particular importance at AZ because the club was in no position to buy expensive players, people at their peak. Instead, the club acquired players at the level below - good players with good learning potential. From 2008, the video-analysis computer specialist Max Reckers worked with cameraman Kees Verver to support the learning process. Verver filmed by special camera - one that produced images notably larger than those that are common presented to TV viewers and hence provide a much clearer overview of the positioning of each player. While Verver filmed, Reckers codified hundreds of game situations into dozens of categories on laptop. In the post-game processing, the images were dissected into some 2,000 'events'. Individual players received a video digest of relevant images - incidents in which they were personally involved. Van Gaal would then provide further feedback, based on his interpretation of the footage.

Video analysis also played a significant role in the game preparation. Recent games by the upcoming opponent were taken apart, analysed and categorised in the same manner that AZ games were treated. Thus a wealth of information was generated that van Gaal could use as a basis for training for the forthcoming match. This became the basis for game simulation where 11 AZ reserves were instructed to play in the style of the opponent, countered by AZ's basic 11. The training was likewise filmed and would become the foundation for a follow-up 11-versus-11 training. The result was that an upcoming match was already 'played' twice before it actually took place.

Van Gaal's video team used sophisticated systems for game-tracking: SportsCode to register ball contact per player, and Sportvu to determine the real-time position of every player - their average playing position throughout the match (curiously, the latter was developed by the Israeli army to track the movement of tanks on the battlefield). Van Gaal gave his pre-match instructions to his team, and team performance was then evaluated based on whether players followed instructions. Compliance was sometimes valued even more than actual scoreline. Thus, paradoxically, van Gaal considered the performance of his team in that early 2008-2009 defeat against ADO Den Haag 'very good'.

Not sure if this has been shared before. A presentation on management by Van Gaal and it is very recent. In all the gloom which has taken over the site, I hope this gives people some comfort that we have got an intelligent man in place and who knows how to set things right, and he will. Wanted to make other thread but many will turn it into some kind of moaning thread as they do for each thread, hence sharing here so all discussions stay at one place. Click on subtitles button for English subtitles.

van Gaal did say that it might take up to 2 years for him to build a team that can compete for the top position when he was first appointed. He doesn't have some kind of magic wand that makes everything perfect right after we finish 7th.

He looked tired as hell. Is it managing us really that hard. Moyes aged for 15 years last year.

Yes. A million times atleast.

I see. Missed it then. I give lots of threads a miss as reading through so much of crap in football forums to find something decent is really not worth the efforts. It does mean though that one misses out on some good articles/videos.

I think the business side of things is getting to him. Just my opinion of course but I think it's annoying the hell out of him. But he may just be feeling the effects of flying to Brazil, managing Holland, then fecking about running round America with the team. That would Traveller anyone.

''We have to wait and see, because you can buy a player in 24 hours, believe me. That’s not a problem.” - LVG

After seeing Ed Woodward work
“It’s not so easy to buy and sell in the football market,” added Van Gaal, who asked for patience from United’s supporter - LVG

''Two weeks ago I was the king of Manchester and now I am the devil of Manchester,” Van Gaal said

I don't know why he is saying that. The fans are still firmly behind him and recognise him as a top notch manager. If anything its the Glazers and Wooward who have faced the brunt of the criticism.

He was referring to the press

Has he been getting criticism from the press though? Most of the noise from the press has been the lack of quality and additions to the team. Even Scholes's criticism was centred on the team lacking in quality. No one has criticised anything about LVG's team selection or his philosophy so far. For instance the poor sub of Fellaini for Herrera was rather swept under the rug from the media's perspective. If Moyes had made that sub, you would have him being lambasted from the fans and media alike.

Herrera injured?
When did this happen and how have I only just heard?

He said it was "the same as Fellaini, we need to wait a few days before we can do a scan". That does not sound good, suggests excessive swelling to a joint needs to be managed before an MRI can be effective, at the very least it sounds like a couple of weeks out, that's best case.

We get down to business. The fans want signings, I tell him. Can he reassure them? “I have to discuss that with my board, not you,” he fires back. But he also yields a little:
“You have to buy what can improve your team. That’s why I bought [Marcos] Rojo, because he can play here and here [in two positions]. So for us he is very good. No, no, we shall buy maybe more players. You never know.

“I don’t think it is fair for me to come here and fire all the players. So I give them a fair chance, I think.” He makes it clear that those who took part in the pre-season tour of America had already been evaluated, while the rest have also now been assessed: “Now [or then] you can say something.”

Good read.

He really does seem like the perfect manager for United at this moment in time. He's always been very straightforward with how much time it will take for the players to adapt. Suppose this place will be a bit of a mess for the first couple of months of the season.
