A signing "out of the blue"

A lot of people are saying that the club are no longer briefing journalists the way they used to and the we'll probably sign someone "out of the blue" or from "out of nowhere"

So, can anyone suggest such a player, one who we haven't really been linked with in the press, who we could realistically sign "out of the blue"?

(This might be a welcome distraction from the Vidal angst)

Alex Bruce

A good holding midfielder with a physical presence. It won't be a really famous name, but a good quality player who'll come straight into the first XI.

I'll take Eden Hazard out of the Dark blue or Kompany out of the light blue.

Take a guess!

I'll admit, I never would have seen Herrera coming before last summer

We have been linked with everyone it seems.
Though i cant recall any repeated links with Bender who would be great for us by all accounts

I don't recall DDG being linked with us before his move, but that might just be my general ignorance to transfer muppetry.

Bender? Gustavo?
Haven't been linked with either.
Martinez from Bayern?

Theres loads

A player that'd immediately improve the team massively, would also be a player that's valuable to whatever team he's leaving and I don't see that team letting said player go so easily that the signing would be done quickly and "out of the blue", therefore I don't see it.

Even the Herrera signing was very much under the radar and progressed very quickly as soon as interest was made clear. We've been largely linked with many of the top available central midfielders and there don't seem to be many attainable, quality centre backs. I'm not sure, Lars Bender perhaps? Even Schneiderlin if Southampton's chairman really has blocked his move to Spurs.

Badelj please.

Fwiw, I don't think there will be one where there's no rumours whatsoever, we were linked with Herrera in AS about a week or so before it broke that a deal was imminent. We're just more likely to hear it from a foreign source first as opposed to it coming from journo's over here as we've seemingly stopped giving them as much.

Pretty sure our Scout, Goalkeeping coach and SAF himself were all spotted watching him over a period. Then the transfer was almost a badly kept secret before it got confirmed for long as he had to change agents or something like that.

Charles Aranguiz... the closest thing to Vidal in world football. Reports saying he might go to Sevilla for less than 20M euros.

Inter has "Aranguiz-Dependency" according to their coach, so i doubt it will happen, but still... would be one hell of a deal for any european team, including us. (except we are gonna sign the best of the lot)

I have changed it to "haven't really been linked with". There will always be some random CaughtOffside linking!

We've been linked with nearly everyone that it almost becoming impossible to name someone who is any good that we haven't been linked with. Especially in midfield.

Lars Bender, would be exacly what we need, and easy to get deal done without the hype as he not at a huge club

I remember watching an Atletico match in I think October of 2010 and the commentators were talking about United's interest in De Gea.

The only really out of the blue signings will be unknown players that the papers etc won't bother printing rumours about because the names won't draw the readers. At the most, for any known player, we can expect just a shorter length of time the rumours are out there. A few days or a week instead of weeks on end.

No no no, you have to monitor situations and prepare bids before you can sign someone. Everyone knows that.

I don't have anything to back this up but I imagine that most transfers that go through are probably sewn up quite quickly from the point they are reported by reliable sources.

By which I mean "all but completed". I mean the likes of Suarez, Costa, Ben Davies, etc took a while to finalise but we knew well before that they were "done dealios"

Iturraspe to form a terrifying Basque axis in our midfield.

Laporte at centre back.

There's a difference between out of the blue and reporters not being briefed any more. We could still sign a player like Vidal out of the blue without any leaks, which would be tantamount to "out of the blue".

Alex Song?

Another defensive midfielder who might be available is Illarramendi, a few clubs like Athletico & Porto linked with him.

Not really out of the blue because we've been linked with him before, but I can definitely see us signing Carvalho late in the window if we fail to land any of our preferred targets.
