Well that depends though Varun. It seems likely that Barca have the majority of the cash for Silva as they've been negotiating with PSG for a few weeks. That could suggest that having money for Fabregas and Thiago would allow them to not only complete the Silva signing (which would be huge for Barca). But they'd have enough cash left to sign another CM to replace Fabregas. So perhaps by us making the offer for Fabregas it's tempting them to sell when they can bring in Silva but also a top quality CM, Mata/Silva/Gundogan. They'd be reducing their squad by 1 player, saving wages. But strengthening at CB and also keeping the numbers in tact in midfield (with new CM and Mascerano taking Thiago's spot). It's all guesswork of course, but I don't think its beyond the realms of possibility for them to sell Fabregras and replace him with a top quality CM. They'd probably get around 30m for Fabregas as no doubt they'll up the price to complete the transfer.

We'll see who's right in a few days I suppose :)

I'd love if it was you

I do believe your thinking could be correct but they'd have to get a top CM in to make up for the 2 losses.

feck me, I was convinced this was off when Cesc was quoted as saying he wasn't leaving but clearly there's been a lot going on in the background with him and the club otherwise this bid makes no sense. We will have tapped him up before making a firm offer IMO so if we can get Barca to sell him which reading between the lines mightn't be as impossible as first though it's very much on. I don't think business will be conducted at 25m but it's likely not too far away.

Also, AN? and steve made me lol in this thread! Thanks lads.

The BBC will never flat out say "they've made a bid" unless we actually have. Not sure why everyone is dismissing the idea that we have when it's pretty blatant now.

Probably past experiences of getting drawn into rumors that at the moment seemed to have so many reasons why they would be true, only to find out that they were not.

The news of the bid is definitely leaked. There's waaay to much smoke for there not to be fire, and with all news outlets reporting it there's definitely been a leak.

Why though? If, as I suspect, Barca laugh in our faces, we'll end up with egg on our faces. Perhaps Moyes has been reading the caf, and this is some sort of bargaining tool to put pressure on Barca?

I'm genuinely intrigued by these events. Will be interesting. Hey, at least we've got a replacement saga after Thiago went to Bayern.

I don't want us to haggle though. When we haggle, we take ages and aren't quick enough. Get in , pay them, get out.
I'm sure we could do it once for a player like Fabby.

Good job you didn't enter the apprentice game. Iczster would have you sacked task one!

We may well have made a bid but I dont think its going to make a difference. He doesnt want to move and Barca are not going to accept the offer unless its some ridiculous offer.

Wouldn't be surprised if Bayern bought him.

I just can't see how they would sell 2 midfielders in one summer but on the other hand surely somebody from either the Barcelona or Fabregas camp have indicated the move, I can't see us blindly bidding for a player that a) isn't for sale and b) has no desire in joining us. We obviously leaked this bid as well which is very unlike us, it's all very strange.

I can haggle, but when we're in need of a CM, and we've had some bad luck with transfers lately, it's apparent that we need to be ruthless and quick.. That doesn't mean we say we offer 30mil and then take it or leave it, but neither does it mean we haggle to the point of sticking on a figure without rising a little to sign a good player. I believe the bid rumours to be true, but I'm still waiting to see how each party involved in this are willing to act/negotiate, as in Barca, Us, and Cesc himself.

Still though, he's a fantastic, PL proven player who would fit us as a lot here know. If we've got a chance, we've got to entice Barca, not give them a figure and not budge on it.

Why? Success or not, he genuinely does seem to love and respect the club. I really do think if he was forced to leave Barcelona and the choice was United or Arsenal, he'd pick Arsenal.

Loving is a club is all well and good but you simply do not go from one of the best teams in the world at the peak of your career to a team that'l be fighting for 4th place in their own league for a while now.

Aye, but that's haggling. We bid 25m which is a significant sum of money for a reserve player. I agree that it'll probably take a bit more but I wouldn't think it would take a lot more if it's possible at all.

I've read somewhere that Fabregas has asked Barca to consider the bid. Has this been reported anywhere, or just made up bollocks?

There is more evidence of a bid for Fabregas than there ever was of one for Thiago. The Thiago stuff was always more Twitter based. Legitimate sources are reporting a bid for Fabregas, not a possible bid, a potential bid, or supposed interest.
I'll choose to not believe it tbh, this Thiago seemed like such a sure thing (even without the official bid) that it's sort of a reminder that most of the stuff spouted by the press is just lies. I don't believe this story one bit (so far at least).

Yeah its odd, I think he will stay at Barcelona. Iniesta will probably always play central now and perhaps they are actually thinking about using Song or Mascherano in midfield?

I'm not thick at all. With transfers or otherwise. I couldn't give a feck about them, truth be told.

And I'm so thick with transfers that I was banned from the Thiago thread for telling the rest of you stupid cnuts time and again that we weren't signing him. How thick was I. I got that one way wrong.
You just got lucky Nev

Yup, but our method of haggling is too tight. We need to loosen up a bit and entice Barca. We're like the bakery analogy someone mentioned earlier, only it's worse now as there is less bread on the shelves.

Yet to be officially rejected, which is quite surprising as the bid was made official by the media at around 1-1.30pm.

I was expecting an instant rejection, to be honest. I do also agree with the thinking of some in here that we would not have made a bid (especially not let it leak out like this, if we have any control over that anyway) without some sort of encouragement from Fabregas' people.

As long as gambit doesn't post "we're signing him", we'll sign him.
