I don't think that we aren't interested in Fábregas - more like that we can't and don't realistically expect that Barcelona would be prepared to sell right now.

Therefore this bid only serves to demonstrate that we're in the market for the best players, we're trying to shop at the high end of the transfer market but sadly, there aren't a lot of midfield players of sufficient quality and none of them are available. Our image remains intact, our pulling power doesn't come into question: we just couldn't find players of real quality - or their club refused to part with those that we singled out because they are important, valued players.
Yeah, we're well known for stuff like this. We seek to appease fans by not signing players to make up for not signing other players that we didn't bid for.

Makes no sense. Barca surely won't let him go, and he's made it perfectly clear he wants to stay.
On the other hand, the Thiago deal made perfect sense.
In conclusion: We're getting Fabregas!

If Fabregas did join us, it would piss off the little Thiago. Without Fabregas, Thiago had a clear succession line into the heart of the famed Barcelona midfield.

The Fabregas rumour has been buzzing a round a while. Sometimes players come out with pledges of allegiance because their position at the club is weak. Might be the reason why he made his 'Im happy with life' statement a few weeks back. Likewise, as we know with the Torres & Carroll signings, strange things can happen very quickly in football.

This forum is full of some of the most epically retarded people I've ever seen. I actually have no idea why some of you are United fans, given the low esteem many of you view the club in. It's all negative, all moaning, all criticism. Nothing the club do is right, everything is a ploy. We're nit even a professional club, we're run like amateurs.

I actually wouldn't mind us not winning stuff for a while, so some of you feck off.
Do you think we have a realistic chance of landing Fábregas? Or, to look at it from the more relevant angle, is there any chance that Barcelona will let a second central midfielder go? Is it not natural to question the motives of the club in case of a clearly unrealistic transfer bid?

We question these motives precisely because we don't believe the club is run by amateurs or idiots.

I know the feeling. But I don't think its just about United. Its the internet.

Unless as has been rumoured Barca get Gundogan. But I'd rather have Gundogan here than Fabregas.

I'd happily pay 40m right now.
I'd pay just about any money for Fábregas. I always hated the little cnut because he has a punchable face but he's world-class and we desperately need him. If there was any chance of actually getting him... but no, I'm not doing this to myself, not again.

That doesn't make sense, because the motives that you're proposing are behind this move would indicate that the club is indeed run by idiots.

I have a better theory:

The club is supported by idiots.

Again, do you think there's any chance at all that Barcelona will let Fábregas go right after selling Thiago?

Impotent after the Thiago heartbreak. Not getting myself excited over this one. Especially after they sold a cracking midfielder already, Fabregas saying he wants to stay and agent De Gea hasn't even signed a ball.. yet.

Well done Steve, you are now reaching my level of knowledge.

You must feel suicidal at that, chief. :D

Anyway, it's probably just a smokescreen© for our underwhelming signing of Paraguayan left-back Ferrero Rocher.

I hope we don't waste ages pursuing a deal that is never going to happen.

Well only an amateur/idiot would think "we failed with a Thiago bid, so lets make it right by failing withbid a Fabregas bid. Everyone will buy it". What would be the point? Do you think they're stupid enough to think that people will buy it, or do you think you're so outrageously clever as to see through this devious intricate ploy to fool everyone we're a big club by failing to sign players?

£30m ish + add ons or something. I fail to see how Barca can expect at least £35m for him when they didn't pay that and he's not exactly set the world on fire there.
As mentioned before, it doesn't seem logical to bid over €34m as Arsenal will get 50% of the profit.

So assuming the price will go up. What would we all agree on being an acceptable bid?
Definitely a record breaker for us. We all want a centre mid but I'd say the way things are going in football the limit would be somewhere in the region of £40m in terms of it being acceptable.

Obviously still unconvinced it'll happen because of all the factors, but it's good to see the club making this kind of move.

Best comment in the BBC News comment box:

"If Cesc joins United, I think Piers Morgan will literally explode."

It'd be worth signing him just for his reaction :D
I posted a tweet of his in the twitter thread, his meltdown would be quite spectacular.

I get that we're all excited and stuff but that's just over the top. We'd need at least 2 world class midfielders on top of Carrick to be able to say that we can compete with Bayern's midfield.
Fellaini has world-class qualities in terms of what he does - bullys the shit out of teams & wins balls he's no right to. We're all in agreement that we'd love a bitta steel in CM & Fellaini is hard as nails, great stamina & can actually play. He's a great threat from set-pieces too.

I think havin a player like Fellaini in the team might not be pretty on they eye, but if you have Carrick & Fabregas in there aswell - then thats a great balance in my opinion. He ticks all the boxes for that physical presence we need in the centre of the park & Fabregas - we all know what he can do...

Unless as has been rumoured Barca get Gundogan. But I'd rather have Gundogan here than Fabregas.
Even though Fabregas was arguably the best midfielder in his last season or 2 here, and the other chap is totally unproven in England?

If we want the player and Barcelona want a certain amount of money, the clause between Arsenal and Barcelona has to be exclusive to them. It's not in our interests at all.

Magical Manchester United.
Just read this Tweet:

From the same source that broke the Thiago to Bayern story. If they get Thiago Silva, surely they need to raise some more funds and get someone else off the wage bill too?!

Do people seriously think this is happening? Why the feck would Barcelona sell him AND Thiago in the same window? I mean, granted, they didn't want to sell Thaigo but the fact is they have a choice here and they're not going to let both go.

That said, we might well have made a bid, in the same way Arsenal bid for Rooney and Suarez - to stir up the fans and make it look like they're trying to sign the top talents.

I don't think it has anything to do with Thiago, I never said that. I just said it might be an attempt to demonstrate that we are looking for the best players in the world, regardless of Thiago.

Either that, or the BBC and all the other sources are wrong and we never actually made a bid. I can believe that, easily. Or it is a "hail mary", nothing else, a desperate move. I hope that's not the case.

They've got Abidal and Villa off, Thiago once he's signed and sealed. Don't think they're desperate to get anyone else off the wage bill with only Neymar signed up at the moment.
