Zlatan Ibrahimovic Transfer Speculation

If anything, this will result in a pay rise from 220 to 300 a week for his remaining time here, which will be peanuts since we have just offloaded Schneiderlin and Memphis and will probably ditch Rooney, Schweinsteiger, Young, Januzaj and others this summer for a collective 710k/wk. We are basically just rebalancing our wages to something rational and Ibra should justifiably be our biggest earner.

Paying a 36 year old £300,000 a week is 'peanuts' and 'rational' now? Wow, must be nice being a rich club. ;)

If he brings 30-40 goals in a year then its obviously well worth it. Remember, this is a club that is paying Rooney and Schweinsteiger a collective 500k/wk to be bit part players. Once both are gone, 'just' paying Zlatan 300 would hardly break the bank. The only downside is it would set an ominous precedent for future world class players to demand similar wages.

I have a question.

I am not fully up to date on Zaltan's contract saga, but the gossip that he's holding out for Champs League next season is a funny one in this case.

For younger superstar or up-and-coming players, being in the Champions League is a must because:

First you might win it, great.

Second if you're not already at a mega club who pay big wages like United, Barca, Real, being in the CL puts you in the shop window to earn you that big money move.

Third, even if you are in a smaller CL team, playing in the top tier of European football probably means you have an increased chance of being selected for your national team and get even more glory.

Now the case of Zlatan. He has retired from international football. So reason three is off. So is reason two. So really, by my logic, the only reason I can see that being in the CL next season is deal-breaker for Zlatan is that he wants to have a chance to finally win the thing. But even then, even with United improving the squad over the summer (should we qualify) this would still be a relatively long shot.

So is that it? I'm just trying to understand why CL football is so important for him extending, and I don't see any strong reasons given his profile.

That's the main point for me, the precedent. Nothing wrong with paying the big money to your stars, but do it too widely and you're going to have agents demanding it for every Tom, Dick and Harry.

Now I don't know all of the players out there that have the right age and potential and is willing to "wait" for two seasons. But since there aren't that many strikers like Ibra out there it would maybe be better to find a young one?

So why not Kasper Dolberg from Ajax? He's been really good this far - is 19 years old, born October 97, 1.87m and 77kg which shows he clearly has the right physique - so he would be 22 years old to take over after Ibra and hopefull fully learned.

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't be against this. I think having strong competition for Rashford for when Ibra leaves would be good and obviously the better player will prevail to our advantage. We could easily play a two striker formation at times against weaker teams, where one drops back more than the other, similar to how Rooney has done with someone like RVP, Hernandez etc. I'd be more happy to do something like this than sign a Lukaku, as I feel that some of the young players in the market now have a higher ceiling than the likes of the current strikers available on the market, players like Dembele, Dolberg, Rashford, and Mbappe all have the ability to lead the line if they put in the hard work to match their talent. Now that's much easier said than done, we've seen talented players like Januzaj and Morrison waste their talent.

Why?

I'm saying the second year of the contract should be performance related.

Then that kind of negates the point of "giving him two years". Great for United, not so good for Zlatan. Players only care about guaranteed income from contracts. Why would he sign up for an extra year where he might be injured and get no less money?

A negotiation is a two way street.

These are exactly my questions over this transfer speculation. I don't see why a 35 year old with a reputation as high as Ibra would be so desperate to play in the CL given he has played in it for the majority his career. If he wants a realistic chance of winning the CL then his agent better get on the phone to Barca, Bayern or Madrid and they haven't shown much interest have they? Then again that is quite a big expectation because the competition is so difficult to win.

Fwiw I think we will get CL football next season one way or another. We will need a miracle to win it though unless we seriously improve.

I think he leaves for a club that has CL football. He won't want to sit out CL two years in a row.

You may be wrong on two assumptions. We will be in the CL next year and he never came here for the CL in the first place.

Don't think so, unless Real Madrid or Bayern Munich want him. There aren't that many teams out there with a "realistic" chance to win CL. If he leaves, it would be for other reasons in my opinion.

1) remains to be seen but we have yet to show we have the ability to win the games to get us there.
2) I did not say he came here for CL football just wondered if he would be willing to miss it two seasons in a row. One season okay. Two? Who knows.

We will be in the CL and as for Ibra, he will get more money to stay on - probably 300k/wk, which is significantly more than he can make elsewhere.

I dunno, I just have this feeling that he'll be away at the end of the season. The fact that there is uncertainty at this stage makes me think that he'll go. Besides, he came to this league and he smashed it. If he wins the Europa League, alongside EFL Cup, gets 30-35 goals along the way then no one could fault him. Yes, we didn't challenge for the title and we weren't in the CL, but no one could say that he wasn't a massive success in England. I think he may see it as mission accomplished. The only way I can see him staying is if we do get the CL and he wants one last crack at it.

I actually wouldn't be that upset if he left, provided we invested in a world class forward. I feel our reliance on him is holding us back, a bit like when we had RVN.

Yeah I wouldn't be against it, if we had an adequate replacement. Like say Aguero :wenger: haha no chance!

...or Icardi. Don't get me wrong Ibra is still a special player. Either way I trust Jose, he's got this.

as good as he is I feel exactly the same

could see some young fast exciting forwards including Martial, Rashford and one or two others really prospering

loved that 06/07 season when Rooney, Ronaldo and Saha formed a cracking front 3

I mean as great as he is, we knew he would be a stop-gap for a year or two the most anyway. So it's hard to get upset when he leaves.

But yeah we'll soon need to splash silly money on a striker :nervous:

That's what I think as well. He's our Van Nistelrooy when really we need a Saha so to speak. Someone fast and agile who can stretch defences and create space for Martial and Mkhitaryan.

I think Aubameyang would be perfect for us. Doubt we could get him though.

Difficult one, will we really leave ourselves reliant on a 36 year old next season, if not will he be happy to step aside and be a backup player if he did stay, ideally the answer would be yes, but in all likelihood he wants to main man where ever he is, and not really sure that's healthy for us next season.

If the last 15 years are any indication, there's 0 chance of that.

A top striker would cost us what £70 million? Plus if we're to get Griezmann that's another £85 million? We would need a right back, a CB and a midfielder. You're talking £300 million in one summer. That's pretty unprecedented akin to Madrid buying Kaka, Ronaldo and Benzema.

We're going to have to sell Rooney, Young, Fellaini and BFS all to China ffs!

I feel the same. I am not sure if he's holding us back but I just can't shake the feeling, we'd be a much better side with a pacy skillful hardworking striker up front. Someone like Sanchez or Suarez.

Of course, and understandably so, which is where the dilemma comes in.

The crux of the whole thing is who holds the key to his contract extension, if it's United then we need to do it, if it's Zlatan then we could be in trouble.

Put the money on a top class striker and drop the idea of Griezmann. Go with a 4-3-3 and play our players in their best positions.

I doubt the Beeb article is accurate. The MLS have been steadily moving away from the retirement league model and are orienting themselves more towards being a proper league who recruit players in their prime.

Im sure a lot of clubs would want Ibra.
Not exactly major news.

Plus China is outbidding them for any players looking for one last big payday
