Zion Suzuki - Goalkeeper

There's a couple of stories today that he's rejected us due to game time. Doesn't sound believable considering he doesn't appear to be a starter for his current team.
 
Let's just skip this one and go with Kovar (but give him playing time, in the FA cup and Carabao at least).

That’s a shame. It was a chance for a Suzuki to stand out amongst a car park full of Chevrolets

I think that something was mentioned about exposure to JFA scouts ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics. If you ask me, I think the JFA are just lazy AF when it comes to seeing who fits their plans and thus will have a strong bias for players of that age playing in the home league rather than in Europe.
 
I'd be very surprised that a club like utd would sign a number 2 that is so young, who needs game time to develop and who isn't likely to play many games and will soon need a loan in order to play.

If you look at the majority of clubs, the backup keepers are usually in their 30s, happy to be a reserve as they've already had a decent playing career and happy to see our the last few years being deputy to the first choice. It would be the first time I can ever remember any club, let alone utd, signing two keepers in the same window. Surely this keeper was the backup choice in case Onana deal broke down.

It'll be annoying if he explodes to superstardom but probably the right move for him if he has ambitions and wants to play first team football. From the outside, why join the club with 595 number two keepers.

Exactly. We're seemingly pretty bad at managing our '2nd' keepers in terms of knowing when to loan, when to expose to cup football, when to offer the chance to challenge 1st choice and when to sell: just accumulating players, and frustrating them or letting value dwindle...
 
Good decision on his part I think. Clearly has his head screwed on. Shame though because I really liked what I saw. Would be disappointing to see him move to one of our rivals in the next few years.
 
Absolute mental decision. He either fancies himself to be world class in a couple of seasons and can have his pick of big teams or he doesn’t feel he’ll ever be good enough to get a game at United any time soon.

I don’t know why you would choose to go and play in Belgium when you could learn so much more at a team like United, and still go out on loan if you want to.
 
That's a full football manager type of rejection. Fair play to him for gambling on his talent.

Because he wants to control his own future. Its better to settle in a Belgium club master that level and then move again than to be in an Amad, Pellistri type situation.

What’s so mental about it?

We buy established goal keepers, not develop them in our academy/reserves and play them.

If he wants to ever play for us someday as a first choice, he picked the right gamble because he’s never going to get it by playing in our reserves.

I think the club being owned by a Japanese company, and having 8 other japanese players will probably make the move to Europe a lot easier too.

He would have probably been loaned out, and we've had Foster and Henderson play for us from the academy, then there's a bunch of keepers in the PL that also came from our reserves.

If they're not good enough they get sold eventually. What's settling about being in Belgium for a year then moving to sign for someone else next summer?

What's good about going to a stepping stone club then? Probably move in a year or two max if he's any good. We could have bought him and loaned him out for two years to some club.

You're at least at a club were you are important and given priority to. Just compare Hannibal situation with a Bellingham who turned us down to go were he'll be prioritized. One is a 100m player now and the other still struggling to get pre season minutes.

So basically if he joined us, he’ll join a long list of keepers who’ll not make it with us.

We just can’t afford to gamble on keepers from our academy. Apart from De Gea who cost us a lot for a goalkeeper , pretty much every keeper who had an extended run in the starting 11 were all established internationals.
 
Ah man, gutted we’ve missed out on a player with such a cool name. But seriously, he looked promising. I think he’s made the right decision and he’s the wrong profile for us to be targeting as second/third choice.

I suspect Suzuki will go onto a team like Genk when Vandevoort finally goes to Leipzig. If he’s good enough, maybe he comes to United when he’s in his prime and Onana’s on the decline.

Bellingham is world class, Hannibal isn't. There's no sliding doors moment where Hannibal could have been Bellingham if only he'd joined Dortmund. You think Foden, Rashford or Garnacho would have been a better players if they joined Salzburg instead of staying at their clubs?

No? I'm saying that United produce good keepers even if they never go on to become world class and play for us as first choice. If he has a shocker in Belgium where is he going to go? United will move on to the next promising GK and he'll be stuck in the lower leagues of central Europe without the infrastructure of a team like United to fall back on.

You can say what you want but having United academy on your cv opens doors.

FYI, STVV has Japanese owners. They have a ton of Japanese players, Arsenal's Tomiyasu also comes from STVV. They have 8 in their roster atm.

Hannibal was considered a big talent hence what we paid for him. I don't know if he could have been a Bellingham but he would be further ahead if he wenrt to one of those clubs who priorities youth development.
The players you listed were good from day one to get minutes at big clubs this Suzuki guy wouldn't play neither would Bellingham if he had moved here at was it 16/17?
