Assuming that our Euros and Copa America finalists will all be ready, I’d like to see:

Onana
Dalot De Ligt Martinez Shaw
Ugarte Mainoo
Garnacho Bruno Rashford
Højlund

For me, Zirkzee is an excellent first bench option. Not only will he give us threat off the bench, but he’ll also give us a lot of tactical flexibility in either letting us play 2 up top and go route one or move Højlund out to the right to utilise his pace and energy.

Otherwise, whether we choose Yoro or Branthwaite as our 2nd CB signing, neither are anywhere near Martinez’s level or De Ligt’s experience yet, so I’d be inclined to let them learn to begin with. Picking 2/3 from Garnacho, Rashford and Diallo was also complicated, so I just went for the 2 who played excellently in the cup final.

The rest of the team picks itself I think, including Ugarte as he’s the only DM we’ve really been linked to.

Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Even if Zirkzee is being purchased with the intention of going ahead of Hojlund (I don't think he is), Hojlund will still get the chance to start off until Zirkzee works his way ahead. Start of a new season, especially a tournament one like this one, you don't tend to see too many new signings in the 11.

De Ligt is obvious as the others are gone/will be sold, while I'm guessing Ugarte in and Casemiro will leave.

I’d love to see Casemiro out, Ugarte and Amrabat in. Proper depth in every department in midfield, from the 6 to the 8 to the 10.

All of which shows you that we still need another Right Back (assuming AWB is sold), and another CM because with Casemiro leaving, and Amrabat presumably not retained, we have McTominay and Eriksen for the deeper roles in reserve - which just isn’t good enough. There’s a potential opening here for Hannibal Mejbri. Up top, Amad, Antony and Zirkzee are good rotational players to have, and I think Amad and Zirkzee will be pushing for starting berths this season. Antony hasn’t been good enough so far, but if we can forget the ridiculous price tag, he can be a solid squad player for us.

I haven’t factored in Yoro because as much as I want him, I don’t think we’ll get him. With Varane, Martial, VdB, Casemiro, Amrabat, Greenwood, Sancho all sold or off the payroll, we’ll have to invest in some midfield and fullback depth. Kadioglu would be a great pick up for us. Hugely versatile. Can cover both full back spots, and potentially in midfield too.

We need to get Ugarte in, as a priority. But if we are letting Casemiro go, then we need another CM as well. Eriksen is on his last legs and would preferably be let go too, and Amrabat isn’t good enough. So we are really light on numbers and quality in the deeper midfield areas. It’s basically Ugarte and Mainoo and that’s it. We’d be forced into McTominay starting in the double pivot.

I’ll be fascinated to see what midfield links appear over the next few weeks.

Amass will be cover for Shaw.
Mount will play when Mainoo needs a rest
Colyear/Gore will be used a cover for Ugarte
Rashford will be used as cover for Garnacho and Amad

We need cover at full back (asuming a AWB leaves)
Another Centre Back (assuming both Lindelof and Maguire leaves)
If Rashford leaves we need another winger (or promote Ethan Wheatley)

I think we will set up in more of a 433 this season. I also think Rashford and Antony will have to work hard before Ten Hag trusts them again. It could also be a narrow 4312.

You're most likely right. Team looks depressing.
 
Why is everyone picking Mainoo? Surely realistically he wont be back to full fitness etc by then because he gets time for a vacation before the new season. I hope we dont see him till the beginning of Sept so he gets a proper recovery

How many times did we play such a good defence this year? That side's easily good enough to smash Fulham. Also you seriously think we're buying a single starter after spending the summer chasing like 20 different targets? Ugarte minimum will be in for Casemiro.

If we do get de Ligt and Branthwaite and decide to play them along with Martinez, it will likely be the Englishman at LB. He's played there before and we won't be moving Martinez away from the central positions where he can see the whole pitch. Also ETH has a hard on for Shaw and favours loyalty/seniority, so unless he's not fit, he'll likely play there anyways. Either that or we play a back three, which will be a radical change.

As excited as I am by the potential transfers, a big question mark for me is how ETH will use them. I hope he doesn't just stick to the same formula with regards to seniority/rhythm, things that yes can be good parameters for standards but he almost uses arbitrarily rather than based on performance. See the curious case playing times of McTominay, Amad, Amrabat etc.

Why? That's obviously not going to be the lineup. As mentioned it only has 1 new starter and I would guess we're going to have at least 3 new starters this season.
 
Shaw will still be hammered in Greece celebrating

Will Mainoo start ? Euros until july 14th - vacation - and then be ready to start against Fulham august 16th ? It could happen I guess but I think he will be on the bench for that one

I read somewhere (so not sure if 100% true) that players that have been involved in summer tournaments will get 3 weeks off.

That potentially puts him in contention for the Charity Shield and/or first league game as a sub. It will be interesting to see what they do with Shaw though.

Assuming that Garnacho and Martinez also have a similar break, you'd assume our team for city/Fulham will be miles off what starts the Liverpool match a couple of weeks later.

On a positive note, all the teams that finished above us last season are in a similar position so expect some unexpected dropped points in the first couple of games.

1-3 Fulham with doom setting in early and rushing back Martinez, Garnacho, Mainoo, Shaw from their holidays, and us crying out for two new central midfielders, and questioning the point of Mason Mount, and wondering why we are still persisting with AWB, Maguire, Lindelof.
