Your favourite retro kits…

Love the top two, the bottom is the best Chelsea top I’ve seen too although most of their fans are right tits in their own right.

Thought you’d like this one..

It's nice. That one was around a few years before I got into football. I had my first United top in 83.

Not my personal favourite - but at the height of the J-wave in East Asia, this man transformed the way kits were marketed here. The oversized cutaway collar, slight bagginess and kitschy design on the sleeves were especially trendy for its time.

Anyone know where I can get some good quality retros?

If you’re looking for United on the app they have a section with a lot of the classics. I got the black kung fu kit and the 99 champions league final shirt off there. Happy with the quality of both. They’re recreations rather than truly retro (produced at that time) but they look great in my opinion.

As for the real deals, I dunno if we can post links to shops on here so I won’t but if you Google ‘retro football kits UK’ you’ll find dedicated specialist stores. Theres also a dedicated shop in East London with a bar attached that’s fun to go have a browse in.

The Jimmy Greenhoff 1979 semi-final against the dippers white Admiral shirt with the three black stripes running down the left hand side.

Lovely. Be even sweeter if it had the authentic anniversary badge of that season..

You'd be hard-pressed to top this line up...

That's pretty much perfect, for me.

I've always liked the white/black combo (with red stripes or whatever is appropriate for the particular kit thrown in too, depending on the maker) for the 2nd kit. And blue for the third is also pretty much ideal (but given it's a third kit, considerable freedom can be given to the designers here).

One of a handful of kits I've bought as an adult (along with our 08 home kit and 98 England away which have already been mentioned).

It's super soft and makes my nipples hard every time I wear it.

It's a shame adidas can't do the three stripes all the way down the sleeve. Apparently the fans' WC kits will have them.

Yeah, I vaguely remember reading something about...that. Why can't they do it?

Three stripes all the way down - that's the iconic thing. That's what people (at least if you count me as "people") want. They've fecked about with all sorts of crap over the years, but three stripes all the way down simply looks very cool. Everybody knows it.

Similarly, I don't buy a pair of Adidas shoes of any kind if they don't have /// on the side. Of course not - what the feck am I paying for? I pay for those three feckin' stripes done right.

Would likely impact the placement of various badges and sponsor logos.

UEFA rules. Apparently a 12x8cm space has to be left empty on the sleeves. Spoiling adidas kits!

They could bring back the three stripes down one side of their shirts though (Spain/Argentina 94) or from the sides (Romania/Bulgaria/Sweden 94)?

Ah, yes - it had to be something like that, of course.

But it really does spoil them. There's a reason someone came up with that thing in the first place - it's a very basic design that's never not satisfying to look at.

Looking at lines that don't go all the way down can be cool and satisfying, sure. Can. But also can not. Three parallel lines going all the way down, though - who doesn't like that?

Also - this:

Yeah, brilliant. A generic looking sneaker, trainer, shoeish sort of thing.

Feck that. Three stripes. Parallel. Going all the way down. To wherever it's natural to stop.

I agree. Love adidas Gazelles, Jeans and all.

I would - in fact - add that there's something inherently cheap or tacky about lines that don't go all the way down. How many grim brands haven't we seen over the years that tried something in the stripes (could be two, could be four, could even be a cheeky three) department, cutting them short at some point, or even worse: varying the length of individual stripes. I remember a particularly ugly tracksuit bottom my uncle used to wear (yes, he's the sort of person who unashamedly wears tracksuit bottoms everywhere, he'd probably prefer to be buried in 'em) whose design was a ripoff of the Adidas design where the three stripes stopped...and then continued further down. It was bad enough for Adidas, but the ripoff was something else.

Or - for Adidas themselves, there's something forced about it: trying desperately to make three stripes (all the feckin' way down) look new and interesting: who cares? It's not supposed to look new and interesting, it's like a basic geometric shape: you can't make a feckin' square look new and interesting, it just is what it is. Focus your creative energy elsewhere.

Love adidas Gazelles

Yep, same. I finally realized some years ago that it wasn't a good idea to wear the same pair of shoes every day and replace them when they got so smelly and awful they just had to go, so I now rotate a bit. But I always have a pair of Gazelles in the rotation. And I always want to put on the Gazelles, but I know I have to restrain myself.
