Look back this thread, an interesting point is that at that time (march), nearly everyone want to sell Giggs.

It's quite amazing to see how "knee-jerked" are the fans. If this thread was posted in late April or early May instead I'm sure 95% of people will include Beckham in their "players out" section.

The point here is that we should trust and give more faith to our home-grown, core players, who have won everything for us and their quality and loyalty are already 100% well proven.
 
I never said sell Giggs!

I have brought up the issue in the past as to wether it is wise or not to think about selling him, but I never did want to sell him (I was questioning his age in relation to pace in realtion to whether we could get him to adapt to being a forward - nothing more).

And before you bring up Beckham with me, because I do not want to lose him, but yes, I have joked and been serious about the Real Madrid thing, and IMO, if they are stupid enough to offer crazy money I would take it. SAF might not, but I would. Then I'd have to go back up there and change the whole bloody thing! :)

Anyway, the whole reason I started this thread was to see how many people, really faced with constraints (some have broke the bloody rules of only signing 3 players BTW - which I think is the maximum sensible number), would actualy want the "names" being banded about (The reason why I asked people for why they said what they were going to do, and why they made their choices). My own inclusion does now have some things I would change (on the first 11 level - that I before wanted to protect O'Shea for another season, and try and give him a littl bit more time - but I would now play him, and play him everywhere - but not on the signings if Beckham stays, I stick with them).

I started this thread to try and see who the serious posters were. Because those who just band this name and that name about were never going to actually take the time to do it.

I did it seriously, it was not a wind up, I thought it would be interesting. Some views I do not agree with, but many probably do not agree with me either, but at least it has been done in a civilised manner. Nobody has really questioned anybody elses choices for example. That has been done in other threads. And we have had no abuse.

Which is why I am proud of this thread.

1. Striker, we only won PL cos Ruud was amazing. I cant expect that 3 seasons in a row, he needs cover or he will do an Owen. When Ruud is rested and its Ole and Forlan we are like pussy cats. We need an alternative to Ruud who can make us dangerous even without him.

2. Goalkeepers. These guys are the difference between an empty trophy cabinet. Just look at seamans save in the fa cup semi. Schmikes in the weekend. Even at that age, still capable of big saves. If you ask me, Barthez has gotten us knocked out of Europe two seasons in a row by teams that we could’ve beaten.

3. Cover for the wings. Competition for Giggs/Becks. Also that ever important thing that makes teams great – OTHER OPTIONS. Someone who can come off the bench and totally change the game and give us a release.

4. Full back/defense is a possible weakness. I think Ferguson is happy with the defence, he is looking to nurture them into well bred brick walls. I would do the same and that means not buying. As for cover, I’m unsure on this one. Brown and O’Shea are just fine as full backs, and if they don’t play as full backs, they cant both partner Rio. If we bring in another defender it means sacrificing one of these lads, and I just cant justify that. However Blanc and May have gone so we need cover…My answer at the moment will be to have Keano as a back up. We have rarely called on Blanc or May this term.

Duff cos he has the electricity and spark of the old Giggs about him. Can play both wings, is soon to be recognised worldwide as a truly world class player. That will happen sooner rather than later with Man Utd. £10m

Bellion, fancied him before, free. Dynamic young player who can also cover for the wings as well as give us some much needed pace up front. Not his biggest fan but why the hell not? More as a squad/reserve player.

I’m gonna break the rules and sign another since one was a free player

Quaresma £8m

(not included in the squad list) and should some of these prove not possible or too expensive, in order of preference:

a. Kewell if he is available for £6m – touch of class. Only chose Duff cos Duff is more electric, but tbh I would take either. Both would be great.

b. Mexes £1.4m buy out clause? Yes please.

c. West Ham go down – Defoe £6m and maybe some bonus fee’s depending on how he does.

d. Roy Makaay is set to leave Depor. The two highest scoring strikers in Europe wud seem nice. £9m

wasnt able to fix the striking problem 100%. i dont think anyone suitable is available for the right money. So I gambled on Bellion, and if he doesnt work out i have Duff, he can cause alot of damage and trouble up front even by himself as he proved in the world cup.

a one man terror is what he is. that kind of ability/attitude/instinct is just so rare. Ruud has it and its what seperates him from the likes of Viduka, Beattie.

All those selling Giggs - aint gonna happen. and he has probbaly been the best left wing in europe if you look at the run in to the season.

seriously, how many players could do what he did to juventus? not even zidane/figo did it.

The great thing about the squad is that no one really needs to be replaced. We simply need to add some depth to the attack to reach the CL finals next year.

Posted that in March. I still stick by most of it. Although there have been some developments. Ryan has found his form and looks very good playing 2nd striker.

I still thing we need another player with pace who can run at people. My ideal would be Aimar of Valencia but no chance there I guess. Someone in that mould though. Kewell may be the best cheap alternative although there has been talk of Quaresma whom I know nothing about. I doubt he would be cheap though.

Up front I still reckon Beattie could do a job but his goal tally has mounted and so might his price tag. If we go cheap in midfield then maybe Ronaldhino or Cisse could be prospects. If we buy big for a pacey midfielder then Defoe/Bellion may be the forward choices.

Defensively I stick by my original choice of Escudes.

Schmieks has left a keeper legacy and we will have to look very hard at our next choice. To be honest there are few about that could hold a light to the Great Dane in his prime.

Vieira (£33m) - Best player in the Premiership. Not signed a contract extention with Arsenal - they might not be able to afford a big offer for him. Frees up Keano to be our much needed leader of the back line when needed.
