Your 5 worst signings in Premier League history?

Andy Carroll to Liverpool?

This thread should've been non-United transfer only, otherwise we keep coming back with similar posts over and over

Andy Carroll to Liverpool?
Definitely a good shout.

I remember that day, Chelsea signed Torres for £50 million (a huge fee at the time), and Liverpool signed Carroll and Suárez. The former was a flop, the latter was a roaring success (and a racist biting cnut). Torres was pants at Chelsea for his first year as well.

Yeah, probably not. It’s just that I remember in his first season he registered zero goals or assists. Definitely not the worst, even for Liverpool.

The worst would include Antony to us, Sánchez to us, and Pepe to Arsenal, all of whom have been already mentioned. Our transfer business has been so bad this past decade.
Chelsea wins the "bad signings" competition, easily. Don't take that away from me.

Kepa
Boulharouz Koulibali Bogarde Rahman
Drinkwater Bakayoko
Sheva Torres Sutton Lukaku

Going 424 because feck it.

Drinkwater was such a weird signing. I remember when he was on our books.

Pound for pound, Antony, Sancho, Pogba and Casemiro have to be up there.

(Casemiro purely due to his salary and length of contract, he's our Winston Bogarde but Winston was reportedly only on £40k/week)

Casemiro is nowhere near the worst signings of all time, he wouldn’t even be the worst 5 the past 5 years for us. He has been poor this season but he at least had a great first season and we won a cup. Most of the other players listed were never good at any point.

Sanchez for example was on similar wages and was terrible from the very start and actively hurt the team. Casemiro came in and lifted the team. His second season takes away the gloss for sure, but it’s nowhere near the worst signing.

Jadon is up there as well. 85M for the shite he served up for us and we're praying to get 1/3 of that back in his prime years.
Pretty sure his fee was 72M GBP. Also, the way he's currently playing we should be able to recoup at least half of it.

Surprised no mention of mudryk. Not much different from antony. Two technically flawed players.

As a United fan for me sancho and sanchez ars a bigger flop than antony. Sanchez ruined our wage structure.

Who was that Chelsea RB who stayed for 10 seasons and played 10 games?

Winston Bogarde.

What happened to the keeper Chelsea signed to replace Kepa? Seem to remember him being very highly rated but ending up garbage.

Sunderland ended up paying an obligation to buy fee of £9.5m for someone who went to Sampdoria on a free, Alvarez.

There are loads of cheaper signings who turned out to be disastrous for their clubs. Alves to Middlesbrough was a huge fail for them, although he redeemed himself with a hattrick in the 8-1 vs City.

Mendy? Won the champions league, playing really well but his performances dipped massively so sold for a small loss. He is nowhere near a "top 5 worst signings list".

In addition to those mentioned above, Di Maria and Pogba. Neither delivered anywhere near what we expected and the former couldn’t wait to leave. Both were also amongst the highest paid players in the league.

Maguire and Sancho must also be in the running, given cost to benefit. We are unfortunately going to appear a lot in this list given how badly the Glazers have run the club.

Us and Chelsea have so many of these.

I can speak for United:

1. Antony

2. Mount

3. Bebe

4. Djemba djemba

5. Kleberson

I think Pogba is a shout for your worst signing ever. Cost a fortune, massively underperformed and ran his contract down to leave on a free.

Let's reconvene in two years' time to see how it's going.

Stewart Downing to Liverpool is a decent shout.

When was this?
The crossing? The season before he joined when he played for Augsburg. Had a good season as a promising young LB and joined Chels for the 15-16 season but must've been awful in training as he never really got to play, and was rarely even on the bench IIRC. A bad transfer but not sure he'd make our top 20 worst ones which says a bit about how many bad ones we've had and also the amount of transfers we do.

Mendy? Won the champions league, playing really well but his performances dipped massively so sold for a small loss. He is nowhere near a "top 5 worst signings list".
This. Mendy was not a bad signing. He was probably the best keeper in the league 2 years ago.

I forgot to mention Mangala.

Us and Chelsea have so many of these.
I think grealish doku nunez nunez keita thiago all would have been called out more if they were.playing for some other club. Thing is if your club are winning or doing well then people won't call your flops out like they do for a United or chelsea

He’s really not he’s had only one season , next season can’t be any worse injury wise . Compared to Antony who’s been fit all season and has been a turd

Yes but next season he's essentially free. We paid 55m to have him for this season and he missed virtually every game.

What about the weirdness that was Keane to Liverpool (and back to Spurs 6 months later)?

Kalvin Phillips to City should get a mention but I think most people forgot that even happened.

Depending on how things go in the next few years Chelsea have a fair few who could get in there — Mudryk, Fofana, Caicedo, Lavia, Cucurella… Plenty of time for them all to turn it around but all very big transfer fees with little to show so far.

Antony Matheus dos Santos to Man Utd from Ajax
Jack Grealish to Man City from Aston Villa
Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea from Inter Milan
Benjamin Mendy to Man City from Monaco
Andre Onana to Man Utd from Inter Milan

Benteke, Keita, and Carroll are the big(ger) duds for Liverpool I’d say.

City have a few bad ones but you can’t really call Jack Grealish (and I don’t really rate him) a valid option for “top 5 worst PL signings”. He’s a poor signing for the money but just solely based on their success, people would bat it away — I think Kalvin Philipps is probably the one from them. Mangala is a good one too, and of course Robinho

Maguire is absolutely nowhere near. Number of appearances alone puts him way ahead of the money we've wasted on others.

A lot of silly suggestions of players who have at least had a good season at the club they went to.

Carroll has to be high up. The fee was huge at the time and it was a ludicrous fit from day one.

Torres was utterly shot away by the time he went to Chelsea for 50m. Scored that big goal that meant GNev needed new pants but was still woeful.

For Arsenal, Pepe. 72m was it and barely had a good game and I can't even remember how they smuggled him out of the building in the end.

Jury is still out on all of Chelsea's 90-110m guys. Mydrk, Caicedo etc. All have potential to make the all timers list.

For us DVB has to be close to a pound for pound worst ever contender. Mount is going the same way.
Antony showed a small amount of promise last season early on but was obviously ludicrously over priced.
Sancho has less highlights and been a real douchey character to boot, so I'd have him above Antony.
Maguire too but did have a good season and a half in there.

Casemiro shouldn't be near a worst ever list, he was a beast last season.

If Mudryk ends up costing Chelsea 90+ million it'll be because he met a lot of performance related clauses (so won't be a bad signing). At the moment he's in the same flop bracket as Cucurella (60 odd million) rather than Caicedo.

Mudders was funny as he had a decent 20mins on his first game and had some ludicrous comparisons to peak Hazard on this very forum from some hapless fans.

Nor is Pogba. People are entitled to think he was a bad signing but to call him a “top 5 worst signing in history” is far too harsh.

Andy Carroll to Liverpool?
Remember when 35m felt like an absolutely obscene amount of money? Even ignoring the fact he was shite, it was a huge fee to spend on anyone - more than United had ever spent on a player.

Weird how insane the market has gotten in the years since, yet at the same time 2011 isn’t all that long ago.
