Yanks and football ...

I though his piece was quite funny. An obvious windup, that quite frankly, produced the desired effect.

It would certainly appeal to the average American sports fan that believes the US to be the best at everything.

As I write this, there are literally tens of thousands of jocks beating their chests shouting "fecking A" at everything that has a stars and stripes plastered over it, or any word beginning with the letter A.

Hordes of rednecks are, as we speak, shooting little Animals whilst singing the star spangled banner, drooling over the certain "whoopass" they would dish out to any other countries sporting heroes should they ever have the guts to show up.

I'm glad we are not playing the New England Cosmos sic or whomever, as a defeat at the hands of Manchester United would almost certainly mean America would invade us out os spite.

He said that the desired effect was to get United to play MLS opposition on their tour, that hasn't happened

Like the word Afganistan? That begins with A ;)

Redsyd, I am sure you are aware that the piece was aimed at the lowest common denominator, the readership of USA today will no doubt be over the moon (ecstatically so if the article had come with more pictures and had ended with a big GOD BLESS AMERICA) as it will appeal to their nationalist/sadistic superiority complex.

USA today readers are scary, the stuff of nightmares.

He's a proper nob isn't he - really pisses me off with his 'know it all' attitude, what does he know about a proper football club?

90% of the americans( i doubt it) cares only about HOCKEY/BASKETBALL, juz a little who really are in *soccer*, and inside that little 10%, i guess. 2-3% are really *expert* and....i guess that little jerk that wrote the report is out of those 2-3 %...hehe :p

It's common knowledge that the English named "Association Football" Soccer, and "Rugby Football" Rugger. Any football fan should know that.

Where are you getting so much hockey interest? If you're from Canada, then I understand, but 90% would be a stretch in the U.S. I like hockey, too, but football (the gridiron version) and baseball are clearly the biggest. Of course, baseball has seen better days.

I'd put the interest level in soccer somewhere closer to 25%. It's an unusual situation in that there are many knowledgeable fans in the U.S. who don't care at all about MLS. Some follow Mexican teams, some follow Rangers, and there are a handful who follow this team from Manchester I keep hearing about.

I'd say around 30 percent care about hockey, maybe 45 percent during the playoff's.

Right Geddy, with the arrival of Kevin Keegan, I'm sure some Americans are starting to follow City. :)
I, however, have been a Gooner for the past 27 years.

and we here are all sorry about that FB. Certainly you would agree that United have the largest fan base around the world. ARSE are not even in the top ten in my opinion. :p
