shitting backwater

You can hardly take a guy called 'Beau Dure' seriously though can you. He's a 2wat, simple as that.

To be honest no publicity is bad publicity.
...and to be honest he was critisizing the management of the tournament rather than the club...

I think this article goes to show that Man Utd are indeed the biggest most famous club in the world...

We're in a tournament with 2 massive teams like Barcelona and Juventus and Man Utd is the team making the headlines...

"Can't blame them, I suppose, for ducking MLS opposition. Ruud van Nistelrooy knows he can't put any shots past Kevin Hartman and Adin Brown. These aren't the second-rate Scandinavian goalkeepers he faces in England, where the only star keeper is former MLS player Brad Friedel. And the Neville brothers would rather shank the ball into the third row 20 times a game than try to contain Carlos Ruiz or Taylor Twellman in a preseason game."

can you smell toast Mr. Dure? cause i think you're having a stroke! fecking clueless, poncy-named, shit-fer-brains yank!

how can we contact him btw?

i don't give a shit about being the biggest, most famous club in the world...i take offense at being called shit, which is what he's implying

Jesus, i knew that whole World Cup thing would swell their heads even further. it was a FLUKE get over it!

It's so strange how some people think it's a terrible thing to want to see talented athletes perform.

ok calm down. why would we even consider let alone evade playing against the Metrostars? in my onion the worldwide interest of matching up Juve us, Barce (+ some makeweights :D ) is far more lucrative in terms of validity of tournament, training work not to say the dirty dollar.
would anyone on here give a rats arse if we lost a meaningless kickabout with LA Galaxy (probably in front of about 10,000 people knowing the yanks) would we though would we care? because i wouldnt. i dont enjoy the thought of utd games i couldnt give a shit about, i dont like apathy and the shirts to cross paths.
instead what we have is the prospect of crossing swords with old foes, european rivals etc.
and i would rather us played Club America of Mexico, who I have heard of, than these buffont haird jocks in gaudy costumes (Landon Donovan= hybrid Jason Donovan and that guy from Bonanza scarily taut+rubbish). us players are ponces mostly, with large jaws but no backbone.
and where the assumption that the US is on a different footballing planet from Mexico? i seemt o remember back to 82 the sight of Mexico in the world cup, but it was the one place on tele you could get a notable absence of americans, was the world cup.
and having read his name again, i still dont know what his name is..oops there its gone again.
anyway imo america is too far to travel pre-season. its a money scheme by all parties and the MSL "clubs" took the money and ran. i'd rather see us tour Spain or Italy and play natives who arent puffed up dorks who slap each others arses like nancies.

My reply:

You know nothing about football so please refrain from your inane comments.

America has not exactly set the world alight with its soccer skills, preferring to host a World Series in which it is the only nation taking part - and you talk about cowardice......

The teams Manchester United will be playing are top European teams who are more likely to beat us than any team America could put up, so your wimps/cowards observations are stupid.

There are probably a good number of Italians in America who will pay to see Juventus, but wouldn't bother otherwise. Four top soccer teams will generate far more money than Manchester United v. Second rate US team.

I thought only your President was nuts.

I guess we will have to wait until the end of next year for the chance to face the La Galaxy in the inter continental cup, where they will no doubt be representing the Americas. ;)

Let me put it this way, I wouldn't chose a MLS match over a lukewarm cup of tea such is the quality. They should show more respect and be happy United are going to grace the stadium.

To some Americans the US ARE the world.

"Home of David Beckham, whose worldwide cult of personality makes Michael Jordan and Barry Bonds look insignificant by comparison."

Who the hell is Barry Bonds?

Can you blame us when people are writing things like this in your press? What did you think when you read it? Did you cringe? The trouble with the article is it writen from a very typically US perspective - we are the best and everyone else is inferior to us. That is why people are anti-american.

He's quite sucessful in the men's rounders that is popular over here. It's some kind of sport that was derived from cricket after they couldn't find enough places to put advert breaks

i think he's more anti european than anything...

this feckin moron responded with this...

Sadly, it was too easy to tell you're American. You took the column way
too seriously and responded with ill-considered abuse. The English folks
who've been writing seem to have a better sense of humor.

I think you're also romanticizing a bit. Do you really think Veron or
van Nistelrooy wouldn't move to Juventus if they offered four times the
money?

No, MLS isn't the Premier League. But why is Man Utd playing a team from
Mexico? Club America is a lot closer in quality to the Galaxy than it is
to Barca. And as others have pointed out to me today, Man Utd tends to
play teams from home nations when they tour no matter how obscure those
teams are. So why not the Galaxy?

Enjoy the next season for the Menace -- that's a good program they're
building.

Given your press' overwhelmingly postive opinion of us, do you expect us to compliment you 24/7?

But seriously, he is an idiot, who knows nothing about football. Why fecking pay any attention to him. He doesn't speak for all Americans, so don't blame us. He speaks for himself, and he is a useless moron. Just fecking relax.

to be honest he doesn't speak for ANY u.s. residents, or virtually none, such is the paucity of awareness of football over here. he obviously wrote the article as a wind-up, perhaps to show his editors that his job is worth saving.

The awareness is what it is. I don't criticize our awareness of the sport, for we play the sports we want to play, not what others want us to.

from mr. dure (heh) regarding his substance abuse:

"That's your sole comment? Awww, that's so disappointing! I've heard such
creative abuse today from all parts of the world.

I guess the answer would be: No. I barely drink, let alone use dangerous drugs."

Well, he proved successful. He got everyone all worked up. Bravo.

I put:

Mr Dure,

In reply to your article regarding Manchester United in the USA Today newspaper I would like to ask just how much football you have ever watched. I trust that you know which sport I am refering to when I say football, it is the sport you call soccer that the rest of the world knows as football. I have to clarify this as from your article I can only assume that you know very little about the things you write about. Do you realise that Manchester United are the biggest club in the world? Do you know about their record in recent seasons? What did you hope to achieve by writing an article saying that they were scared of playing MLS opposition on their US tour next summer?

You are a very sad man who unfortunately has a lot to learn. I hope that you don't intend to attend the Manchester United games this summer as you have made a lot of enemies today. I don't suppose that you were planning on attending anyway as that would mean doing some research on something you are going to write about and that is obviously not what you are in the habit of doing very often.

A United fan in the USA

Me explain myself?

feckin' hell Destro...What language was that?

no.. i doubt there will be a beatles welcome (like in asia) for United... I think the people will still be in shock they get to watch the matches and sing for the Red Devils in the flesh then stand at the airport.. but i could be wrong as i don't know how many crazy people live on the coasts... as for me.. i'm landlocked hehe

by the way that dirty fecker dure is a moron... he accused me of taking his article too serious? He makes us Americans look bad.. i told him i'd like to give him a right kick up the ass with my size 13 shoe..

Are you folks mad because Dure questioned the quality of Manchester United's opposition during the lucrative up-coming tour of the former colonies, or because he referred to them as a "Soccer Club?"
Next question: would you rather have United be a PLC or a soccer club?
