I think the Yakuza 3 demo will be on PSN today. As i cant download demos because they dont install, if anyone plays the demo, can they let me know what it is like?

Thanks am interested in getting it

I will be grabbing it, from the gameplay vids and trailer it looks like a cross between Shenmue and Street Fighter. I think its primarily a fighting game though, not as much freedom as Shenmue.

I think they are releasing the special edition as standard here too so thats a bonus. But its not translated to English, subs only, I think.

You shouldn't have said that.

Here comes Weastey. . .

Yeah it will be English Subs which am cool with. It has supposed to have some real nice graphics as well. Rated Really high in Asia.

The first two were amazing especially all the mini games and the storyline was as believable as any game I've ever played, really interesting representation of the Japanese underworld. A game that could be examined sociologically with all the different types of gangs and illegal operations going on, a much more mature and knowledgeable take on gang culture than GTA. I'm actually a little surprised this come out here as the first two sold fairly abysmally despite being excellent games.

Shenmue seems like an obvious comparison but it's more like an old school beat em up than that. You beat up people to get money and improve stats by buying food. You spend quite a lot of time fighting early on in the game compared to Shenmue.

Just played the demo for abit. Graphics are now abit dated for a PS3 game but the actual gameplay seems good and ofcourse has the rather bizzare Japanese culture stamped on it. After some fighting which was half decent I somehow ended up in a Karoke club pressing buttons to clap and along whilst a big haired girl sang, then I had my turn at some kind of ballad.

I like it, story seems good and the fact the cutscenes are not translated gives me that happy feeling I got when I played Shenmue II on Dreamcast. Bit dissapointed some of the seconday dialogue is just subtitled with no voiceover but I can live with that. Overall I am intrigued by it and therefore will probably buy it even though there are some big games coming out in the next few weeks.

I have read that visually the game is supposed to be very special. How are the Controls!

Visually it is good, im not saying its terrible but when you compare it with newer titles its not stunning. The cutscenes are great though.

Controls, camera movement took abit to get used to but when actually fighting its pretty simple to pick up, I kicked everyones arse with some nunchucks no sweat.

Yeah it has been out i think over a year now in Asia. Nice to hear that the cutscenes are good. You always need a good story.

Is the fighting arcady or what?

It's arcadey yeah, I mean you glow different colours and stuff when you power up and you have special moves which then split into some kind of QTE (). It's good though, I liked it.

Cool. I am looking forward to getting it. It seems pretty good and they hype is pretty high.

Anyone who has played number 1 and number 2. Do the stories continue over as i have not played either 1 of them.

Neither have I but the special editon comes as standard for this and it contains:

"Yakuza Who's Who" - learn how all the characters are connected and who turned from rivals to allies in this fully animated guide

I reckon that will be enough to know whats going on.

Is that going pre-order bonus or just normal.

I remember SEGA doing a similar thing for the xbox port of Shenmue II, in that they provided a movie dvd including key cut-scenes drawing out the happenings in the first game.

I'd like to think they'd do the same for the standard version of Yakuza 3 too, would only be fair too considering that its the first in the series for the majority of western gamers.

If 3 doesn't sell in the West, then we can forget Kenzen and 4. Yakuza 4 is to be released in Japan in around 3 weeks.

Am looking forward to this. let's just hope it's as good as the hype in the east.

Thought the demo was interesting, will probably pick up the full game and give it a go. Too many games that I want coming out in the next couple of months !

Heavy Rain
Final Fantasy
Yakuza 3
Prison Break
World Cup
GTA Episodes
Mafia 2

Lot of games coming out this year that look real good, am looking forward to from your list Yakuza 3, Mafia 2. Am in 2 minds in regards to GTA Episodes , already got Heavy Rain.

im disappointed after the demo, i thought it would give you more freedom . Its a sandbox but very limited one . Streets looks like corridors and i absolutely hate the main character animation ( especially running and walking) .

Fighting is shit in this game , even if you lock on an opponent you find yourself slashing the air . Not my cup of tea.

Yet to try the demo.... but heard it s a either love it or hate it kinda game

Only just learnt that they've cut out HEAPS of content in the western version:

Sega is Cutting Yakuza 3 content when it comes to the US
"The content between Yakuza 3 US/UK and Yakuza JP is a little different in that we took out certain bits in order to bring the game to the west in the time alloted for us to do so," a Sega rep told IGN. "The parts we ended up taking out were parts that we felt wouldn't make sense (like a Japanese history quiz game) or wouldn't resonate as much (such as the concept of a hostess club)."

You may have gone on a karaoke date with Rina in the demo. In the original game, you meet her in a hostess club, and have to buy her gifts and learn about her in conversations. Now, we suppose, she'll just randomly call you like she did in the demo. Somehow, the dating won't be affected, as the Sega rep assured IGN that "the story experience was the same as the Japanese version."

10 (all) Hostess/Cabaret Clubs Cut
4 Mini-Games cut
(Answer X Answer, Shogi, Mahjong, Massage Parlor)
2 Missions Cut

Thats my preorder cancelled then, the only parts that intrigued me were the cultural aspects, dont want to be left with some mediocre beat-em-up.

True but i would prefer everything to be the same but am not that fussed

To be fair its just the usual spasticness we've come to expect from Sega. I just wish they would sell the rights to Shenmue...

anyone buying it. also on the demo how can we play the mini games

81 on Metacritic. It's already a year old, though, so I'll pass.

I'm wondering if the main reason Yakuza has had a poor(er) reception in the West is due to only cultural differences, or whether it is because the majority of western gamers are those whose formative gaming experience compromise mainly of FPSes/Playstation/Playstation 2 games. The reason why I am thinking of this is because I don't think such a huge majority of western gamers back in the NES and SNES era had problems with Japanese games. I believe even quirky games sold very well, too.
