Xavi

Agree Xavi would have been fantastic for most teams in most systems. However I dont think he'd be quite as good as he was in Barcelona's system with 3 in midfield - thats a system that plays to his strengths

We do currently have a similar system and personally I'd take him for a season like others have suggested, as it would help mentor the likes of Ander and other CMs. But I dont think theres any chance we'd do that because we already have Carrick who is in a similar situation. Playing the 2 old boys together wouldnt be an option

In a lot of teams he would've been average. In tiki-taka he was brilliant and won everything.
Nonsense, Xavi is the system. Stick him in any of the teams in the bottom half of the league and he'd have improved them so much.

I'd love him at Arsenal for a year... He's still been brilliant this season, I think they're better when he's on the pitch.

My second favourite player ever behind Paul Scholes. Not comparing them I just prefer Scholes as he played for us. Looking forward to watching him play live out here in Qatar next year if what the media says is true. Would love him at United more though for a couple of seasons.

I've heard that Pirlo might also be off to Qatar. Would be cool if they played for the same team (I suppose both to Al-Sadd where Raul played). Wonder if there will be footage available. Poor opponents. :D

Xavi was always central for both Barcelona and Spain and you could have a case both ways - they wouldn't have been that good without him and likewise he wouldn't have been able to produce as much if it hadn't been for his teammates although there's less of a case for that in Spain national team IMO because he was basically their best/second best (depending how you rate Iniesta) player during their most successful period. At Barcelona he had Messi who was consistently their most productive and important player.

Has a great name. Repeat his name a few times and you 'd be thinking "what a great word".

Wouldn't mind him here for a year. Good squad player. Would love to work under LVG

I'd have him here for a year. Use him the same way we used Scholes in his last season.

Anybody feel he might be useful for you in a coaching sense? Not necessarily the first team, but in some capacity.

He's one of the most intelligent players I've ever seen, I'd be amazed if he isn't poached by Barca for some sort of coaching role after retirement, ala Guardiola.

Why United? He's Barca thru and thru, won't be surprised if he ends up coaching your youth team in not a long time, they are struggling now right?

He'd have no hesitation working at United if there was no job available at Barcelona though.

Does he really like United that much? A man like him would be welcomed with both arms wide open
If he ever left Barcelona during his playing days, United would have been his club of choice. He nearly joined United in 2000 i think but an injury to Guardiola stopped that. He loves Scholes, and also really liked United's 93/94 double winning side.

Well, as LvG wants to instill a new youth system, it won't be a surprising move to offer him a coaching role

That's why from a United viewpoint it wouldn't be the worst idea. It's far fetched though as Barca would love to see him there in a coaching capacity, but it won't be for a few years. Some time away would benefit him and the club.

I would love to see him here either as player for a season or on coaching assignment, anyway i don't see the later option would happen in near future.

Xavi would be a very good addition to our coaching staff, a person with his football intelligence and overall insight into the game would do well at almost any club, but I'm not quite sure where he'd fit in. We already have Stuivenberg and Giggs in the assistant coach/ manager position, and adding Xavi to the mix might upset the existing dynamics. Warren Joyce has done well as the Reserve team's manager, though Xavi could provide another element to that given his history with Van Gaal and the latter's plans for re-calibrating our youth setup. Would he stick around long enough to complete the fundamental process though ? Or will the chance to manage another club's first team be too enticing in maybe 2-3 years' time ? Will the short term benefits supersede a more long term, fleshed out approach ?

Reckon he might pull a Guardiola, their career trajectories are becoming quite similar. Play in Qatar for a while (like Pep did at Al-Ahli post the Serie A experience), travel the world, specifically South America and learn different approaches to football from a whole bunch of managers, before ideally managing Barcelona B and maybe the first team in due time.

Actually that's part of the Qatari deal. They want him to coach there and be part of the team working on the Qatari national team for the 2022 world cup.

The most consistent player i have ever seen especially in the big games. Nerves of steel. Seeing him misplacing a single pass or losing the ball under pressure was an extreme rarity. Don't think ill ever see such a consistent player ever again.

He's almost certain to make a fine coach. He's a bit of a big figure and leader in the dressing room AND has an incredible understanding of the game. Whether he becomes a fine manager is a different thing.

Xavi, Scholes, Iniesta, Keane and Vieira are the best midfielders i have seen in my life - i'm only 20. Xavi has been so humble despite being one of the greats, announced his departure at probably the right time instead of with four months of the season remaining and making it one big farewell tour for the media to make a song and dance of. I hope he gets the adulation he deserves outside of Spain. Graham Hunter labels him the best Spanish footballer of all time, and Xavi is the best Spanish footballer i have seen.
