X is a poor man's Y

On a Manchester United forum, sure. Personally i think Bergkamp was a better player. Cantona was world class but so was Bergkamp.

Take the united bias out of it…

Both great players.

But both played the same second striker position in the same league round about the same time for top teams.

And Cantona had a better assist record, and his goal record is almost twice as good.

And he was the catalyst and captain of a multiple title winning sides.

You can potentially argue maybe that Bergkamp was a more graceful or elegant maybe… but a better, more effective player??

Not in the same league.

Cantona gets overlooked so much these days. He was the best player in the league bar none for 4 or 5 years when the prem first started.

I get similarly annoyed when Keane is remembered as merely a hard tacking clogger, rather than the complete midfielder he really was.

Weghorst is a poor man’s Peter Crouch

Rashford is a poor man’s Mbappe

In this situation i think it just means that Bergkamp was a better player and not that Cantona was poor.
Your claim collapses when only the supposed poor man’s version truly dominated the best league both played in and won 5 league titles in 6 years. Bergkamp’s PL successes were nowhere close - spread out with league’s here and there.

Adebayor = middle class Kanu

La Masia have several poor man copies of their own legends, as they have a uniform delevoping system. Example Sergi Samper had a very similar style to Busquets although much inferior. Riqui Puig = poor man Iniesta etc

Ilaix Moriba = poor man’s Pogba

Lisandro Martinez is a poor mans Vidic,
Hojlund is a poor mans Kane
Anthony is a poor mans Robben
You can't just pick utterly unrelated poor or inconsistent players and compare them to quality ones, there has to be some similarity

Keane was a poor man’s Souness. Both great mind you.
Keegan was a poor man’s Georgie Best. Again both great.

Cantona - A poor man's Dalglish.

Ronaldo was a poor man's Ronaldo
