WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win WWC - Rubiales sacked, now found guilty and fined

Yea, even Norway have a few top class players in Hegerberg (Lyon), Graham Hansen and Syrstad Engen (Barca), Maanum (Arsenal), Reiten and Mjelde (Chelsea). If gelled and well drilled, they would also be a dark horse.

Yeah I didn't include them because I haven't been impressed the last few times i've seen them but that's a lot of talent.

Some of the teams that went out had a better than Greene 2004 chance, I think, since there haven't been many blowouts in the knockouts and teams like Italy or Nigeria looked like if they'd gotten 2-3 random goals they'd have a chance, which seems like a good development depth-wise.

@RedDevilQuebecois, do you know where I can rewatch the final here in Canada after it's been played, with commentary in French? My daughter wants to see it, but I don't want to get up at 6 in the morning for that and anyway don't have a subscription to a sports channel - so I'm hoping we can just rewatch it afterwards at a more reasonable time.

I'm not looking for anything illegal btw and I'm happy to pay, I just have no idea where to look. (Cause I don't think RDS allows rewatching entire matches afterwards, and I'm anyway not sure if they do pay-per-view.)

I am not in Canada so I dont know if this helps or not.

Watch and stream Spain vs. England LIVE across the TSN Network, the TSN App, and TSN.ca on Sunday morning with coverage starting at 5:45 a.m. ET / 2:45 a.m. PT.

When: Sunday, August 20

Pregame Start Time: Spain vs. England - 5 a.m. ET/2 a.m. PT

Main Coverage: 5:45 a.m. ET/2:45 a.m. PT

Where to watch: TSN1/3/4/5, TSN.ca, and the TSN App

RDS has a full replay at 9:30 AM on Sunday morning, but that would be the last call if you want to catch it on Sunday.

edit: There is also Monday at 1:30 PM, but that depends on what you do on the day.
RDS.ca does seem to have the games so maybe ask a friend with a subscription/cable for their password (they can change it after). Other than that, not sure, since TSN appears not to have it, Reddit doesn't and RojaDirecta is down. Maybe a French torrent site? Or just pay for a month of RDS, DVR/Record it and then cancel after.
Thanks guys! I hadn't noticed that 9h30 replay: that's perfect. I'll see what's the minimum I can do with RDS then. ;)

No, that's just the match itself, and that's 6am over here. Also, TSN is in English and my daughter would far prefer French. Thanks though!

I’m wondering if Tooney keeps her place or LJ starts from the first minute. I think LJ off the bench might be a good option.

I might be biased, but it makes far more sense to have Lauren James coming off the bench now.

I just realised who Lauren Hemp’s dribbling reminds me of. I couldn’t put my finger on it this entire tournament. Do you lot remember how good Gemma Davison used to be?

‪If Phil Neville was able to manage the England’s women’s team with no credentials other than his connections and his last name then I see no reason why Sarina Wiegman who has actually done great things in football management (already won a WC and through to a final) shouldn’t be on the list of candidates for the men’s team. List would include Saria, Eddie Howie, and the Wolves Manager

Would be awesome if the FA would give it to Wiegman. Is English football (I mean its fans) ready for this? A large part of the reactions to this in The Netherlands are as backwards as you would imagine they'be from the average football fan.

This is such a weird idea because it would be FA admitting that the Men’s job is bigger. Should never happen

Hell yes, it'd be brilliant. She can't be any worse than Southgate and it might actually prove to be inspired. I hope they do.

The thread on that would be like the takeover thread!

Well of course the Men's job is bigger! Hardly a controversial take

Would be a historic appointment but in reality it won't happen, that the conversation on the possibility is even happening is already a huge stride forward though

Disagree with that. At a time when female football players are fighting for equal pay at international level, to take the women’s team coach and put him in charge of the men would be a very negative move. If she got another men’s job and moved I could understand but the English FA won’t do it to their own team.

She's won two euros and been a WC runner up.

Surely there's just no way to deny that the men's job is a huge step up. The attention will be exponentially bigger, not least of all since she will be a pioneer.

There's nothing wrong with admitting men's football is bigger at the moment, it simply is, but giving Wiegman this job is a great step to show women are being taken seriously.

Well that’s one way of looking at it but you can also look at it in a way that the Women’s team did really well and the FA goes to them & says well it’s great that you won the World Cup & the euros so we will take your coach to put her in the more important job. Will never happen and neither should it ever happen

Weigman was the only female manager to make it out of the last 16 this tournament I believe? It would be a shame for the best female manager to leave the women's game, imo.

I do see your point, but I respectfully disagree (not sure if this is allowed on the internet).

I don’t think that’s true, it would be her decision and if she wanted a new challenge - which would be quite possible especially if they win the WC then it might be of interest. It wouldn’t be the FA dictating that she does a more ‘important’ job.

Note that the Men's team job will be vastly higher paid - in fact I think England Mens manager might be the best paid National job on the planet, this was certainly the case in the past anyway

Definitely men’s football is the much bigger business. Whether or not Wiegmam can handle it is down to her

Southgate went from managing the under 21’s to managing the men’s team. Phil Neville was a disgrace of an appointment for the women’s team literally had nothing.

Wiegman deserves to be on the list and interviewed.

I get your point. It’s not like promoting someone from the under 21’s. But men’s football is the much bigger business and sport.

I think most in the women’s game know and acknowledge that and would view it as great moment and also one which will put more eyes on the women’s game.

So will Ella keep her place with James available again?

Fara Williams thinks Toone should be dropped for James.I don’t think James is quite at that level of importance and stardom that Rooney was back in the day. I wouldn’t drop Toone. She has earned her a starting spot in the final. But then again it’s a World Cup final. It’s likely a once in a career chance, do you let sentiment and doing right by the player who got you here decide or do you just parachute in the better player? Albeit a player who has already let the team down once.

I really really like your sentiment but it would be a totally different kettle of fish..

I speak from experience with this as a women myself who was very good at football and never had the opportunity to even dream of being a pro. I played in boys teams until I was 16 and then various decent women’s teams. I’d have to travel over a hour to get the first good team I could play for. The only professional team in the country when I played was arsenal women and even they were semi pro. They had other jobs to pay the bills. Football wasn’t an option for me, not even a dream.. so to see these girls play at world cups and get paid to do so, is amazing. Very emotional actually. Women’s football has grown beyond belief, it’s staggering really. Everywhere you go you see little girls in footie kits and it lights me up every time. I was always alone in this.

But the reality is the mens game is light years ahead. Of course it is.. how could it not be? The level of everything is light years ahead. They have had generations of playing football, the best investment, exposure. Men and women also have totally different body strength and power etc, which is why men should get compared to men and women to women, it’s all relative.

the womens game will truly stand in its own when people stop comparing them. Even if the men’s team would beat the women’s team 30-0 like I’m told regularly, there’s multiple reasons for this and it’s the reason why men play against men and women play women. How good is the level going to be in 20 years time if it keeps growing and getting the increased investment it is now? It’s going to get better.

There’s nothing wrong with saying that managing the men’s team would be a step up because it would. On every level.. but what’s more impressive to me is that a WOMAN could really manage one of the best teams in the world and go toe to toe with the world elite. Now that’s progress.

Male managers for woman’s teams is quite popular isn’t it but you don’t see any woman managers manage men’s teams.

I would sub Blackstenius for Blomqvist, the Australian defensive line looks like they are hung over, zero speed there. Sweden has started game with the exact same formation and they still have gas left, pretty amazing. I would have switched it up for this game but cant complain about the result thus far.

Women's football matches once pulled bigger crowds than most men's games - sometimes more than 50,000.

In the 1920s the sport flourished with around 150 women's teams in England.

The ban on women’s football in stadiums from 1921 and 1970 put a stop to that pretty quickly. In the words of the FA Council at the time "The game of football is quite unsuitable for females and ought not to be encouraged.

This is some history I did not know. So FA effectively killed women's game.

Yep, that’s why it was effectively banned for 50 years in England. The FA were worried it was impacting on the development on the men’s game.

Are the people behind this in jail or at least have been punished properly? The fecked over generations of lasses and women and still are affecting womens football to this day!

yeah that’s essentially it. It just killed it and by the time the ban had lifted the mens game had grown massively and women not playing had become the norm. You’re talking 50 years of people not being allowed to watch you play and being told it’s not normal for girls to play pretty much.
