WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

Bad news about a player who United have been linked with.

Hopefully nothing too serious, but it's a real shame that she'll be missing the tournament.

This is like when England kept starting Ellen White despite having far more dynamic, athletic and just all round better strikers in Alessia Russo and Beth England sitting on the bench.

I used to think this but now England struggling for goals since White retired

Anyway will be interesting to see who starts upfront tomorrow - I'd go with Daly

That a bummer for her. What kind of illness rules her out of the whole competition that will last for at least 2 more weeks? Maybe Glazers have offered her boatloads of money to avoid injury and sign with United immediately after the tournament? ;)

Lets hope Banda Banda will still take part!

I haven't been up this late in months.

I'm typically waking up to piss for the second time in the nine o'clock hour.

WTF - it's not in even 9:30PM where you are - do you work nights or something?

My kid is loving some of these names and couldn’t stop giggling yesterday during the Costa Rica match every time the commentator said ‘chinchilla on the ball’

just as well he’s in bed for the Vietnam match as Tran Bich is playing right now.

Back to football. USA look strong and liking the looks of Sophia Smith, great touch

Really should be more than 1-0, but it feels like it's only a matter of time.

Not bad for Vietnam, 30 min only 1-0 down, their keeper is doing very well.

Of course, it's going to be a penalty. How mentally deficient does a defender have to be to throw herself/himself down like that with a tackle nowhere near the ball? I have said that countless times before.

Bonkers of a decision by the Vietnamese defender. STAY. THE. F. UP. ON. YOUR. FEET.

I used to attend Joe Machnik’s keeper camps when I was a young lad. Good to see him vertical these days.

Gotta take a look again, but it looks it should have been offside. Morgan looked offside when the long kick was taken and interfered with the play before the goal was scored on the rebound.

USA been very sloppy so far. Vietnam been great though, very organised and blocked the middle of the pitch. Struggling to deal with pace on the wings though. If USA improve 2nd half then it could still end up a pretty big score.
Morgan looks awful, been invisible bar the pen miss.

What does everyone think is a big score these days? For me any win of 5 goals or more is a big score.

Sometimes I do wonder if Morgan is only still playing this much for PR reasons.
I dont know, she hasnt been in it much but Vietnam have had 10 or 11 players in the final defensive third. The US have been poor at spreading play and creating more space for Morgan. Draw the Vietnamese out some more and Morgan will have a better chance to get on the ball.

What kind of PR reasons?

She's probably still the most marketable player on the team. I think that will change during this tournament though with more exposure for younger players.

This just reminded me of talking with Grant Wahl about this in 2015. Morgan was "good girl" marketable (read: hot) player to Hope Solo's "bad girl" marketable (read: hot) player.

I wonder how the USWNT manager Vlatko Andonovski feels about this. If Andonovski knows that younger players can do the job (and I expect there are a few) while Morgan would be more useful coming off the bench, he should do it.

Mind you, Homare Sawa was by far the world's most popular female Japanese player in the build-up towards the 2015 WWC. But the Japanese manager at the time (rightfully) felt that Sawa would not be able to contribute that much in a 6th World Cup after so many injuries. Hence he mostly used Sawa as a substitute (only 2 starts in 7 matches). Sawa was also no longer the captain in 2015; Aya Miyama was the undisputed skipper by then.
