WWC23 | England v Spain - Spain win the World Cup - and Rubiales gets sacked

Rapinoe disasterclass. Couldn't have happened to a nicer person.

A keeper can't save it twice?

Is that actually right, therefor what's the American keeper even moaning about initially.

Going through to a quarter-final with one shot on target in 120minutes is appalling, tbh. Both teams were awful.

Good drama in the shootout. A bit farcical.

Why no replays of the final goal over the line?

I feel sorry for USA, they deserved to win the game, best wishes to them!

Rodman must be furious, player of the game subbed in minuted 65. Just crazy.

Wow, what an ending! What would have happened if it hadn’t crossed the line though? I don’t think a keeper can make a double save in a penalty shootout, is that right?

Nah, she got that wrong. The keeper can obviously touch the ball as many times as they want. But the ball had crossed the line before she made the second save.

It would've been a miss since it hadn't crossed the line.

I think Laura Wood meant that the keeper didn't manage to save it a second time. Not that you cannot save it twice.

Worst performance by the Swedish team in a long time. Loads of simple mistakes. Might have been nerves.
Amazing to still be in the tournament!
Payback for the final against Canada perhaps.

That's how I've interpreted it, too. Keeper makes the save, ball goes over the line, keeper knocks the ball out. It's already crossed the line, therefore it's a successful spotkick.

This is why Carli Lloyd was wrong. Because imagine they didn't celebrate making it through to the knockout stages. And they got knocked out like this. That's a no celebration tournament right there.

Celebrate whenever you can.

Congratulations to Sweden, USA couldn't put them away and paid the price.

To be fair to the Americans, this was probably their best performance of the entire tournament but for the Swedish goalkeeper they would have easily won this 2-0 or 3-0 but such is football. On the balance of play the entire tournament, the US deserve to be out.

Japan should beat Sweden but set pieces could be the issue for them. At this point value wise I think Japan are best bet for this tournament

Insane that all the talk was about Musovic before the shootout and in the end she didn’t save a single penalty

Signs have been there that USA have been lacking the goals in matches, some good saves from the Swedish keeper though during the game.

Swedish TV was so cringe saying USA missed 3 out 4 penalties because the USA players were terrified of Musovic!

I cant believe USA missed 3 out of 4. Just put the ball in the middle of the net, its the best penalty statisticly.

Can’t even imagine the controversy if this happened before goal line technology came in
The assistant reacted to it, I reckon she thought it was a goal - but as you say, without the technology I doubt we'd have seen it given.

I would not have protested if this was not given even with the VAR photo. Its not clear cut to me, even though its a computer doing it :D

I am not confident the ball fully crossed the line tbh. But with VAR nobody will complain at least, so thats good in a way.
