He's like the anti-Ronaldo. He presses and keeps the formation solid but doesn't look likely to ever score.

Spot on. An upgrade on Martial and one of the reasons we coped so well with Arsenal till the midfield lost the war
Let's be real. At the start of the season Martial had a performance against Arsenal we reasonably wouldn't even ask of Wout. He isn't better but he can do a decent job and bring something different subject to limitations like having no ballcarrying and being somewhat less of a goal threat than even Martial.

To be fair it would help if our impotent attack could get the ball to him in a goalscoring position

He's near enough incapable of receiving balls in to him anyway - most of the passes made to him he's either too lethargic/cumbersome or on his heels to reach. He was second to near enough every ball today.

I got the impression that after not too long in the first half the team did actively avoid trying to pass to him because they just knew the attack would break down whenever they tried because a CB would always nick in ahead of him.

I didn't think he'd be as bad as he has been tbh, he's practically a training cone.

He's not an upgrade on Martial. Be serious.

He was an upgrade today, purely because he made himself available for selection. Which makes him an upgrade in at least 50% of our games based on the season so far.

His link play was fine today anyway. No worse than Martial in recent weeks. And he was no less of a goal threat than Martial in recent weeks too. Even though he wasn’t a goal threat at all. But at least he’s new and should improve.

Not really sure what he added today vs Arsenal.

Dropped back, made a few passes. Don't even think he had a shot did he?

Very underwhelming, hope its just new club nerves.

He is what he looks like - the best we could get for buttons in January. The Glazers have checked out.

It's not new club nerves unfortunately.

Not aimed at you, but I'm find it weird people seem surprised that the 30 year old striker who got relegated scoring 2 goals for Burnley, was currently playing for Besiktas and has a record of 1 in 3 in the Dutch leagues isn't that good.

I like his attitude and I can see he ticks a lot of the boxes that ETH want's in a striker but this guy was never going to be a big hit for us. Hopefully he can paper over some cracks in the squad and we buy somebody good in the summer.

I think it's clear he isn't going to score many goals for us. Hopefully, his hold up play creates room for our other attackers because I can't see what else he brings.

I’m not sure why everyone is so disappointed. Did anyone see the game. I thought his hold up play and link up front was pretty good. He offers something different from what we have
He’s not a wolf beater but did what was asked of him. He’s no Ronaldo no zlatan but he brings something different to the team. His attitude and work ethics was spot on so far

Don’t think he was nearly as bad as people in here are making out.
His work rate was fantastic, pressed from the front and starved for service.
Considering he’s only been with the squad a week I think he’s doing an ok job.
Judge him in front of goal when he actually has a chance.

He’s going to offer something different. Maybe bring him on at the end of the game to hassle opponents tired defenders. He should not be starting though.

I don't get the negativity, guess people were expecting lots of goals given he is a striker, but his overall play and contribution have been great imo, definitely giving more than Martial or Elanga, would he be my choice for a striker come the summer? no but maybe as a cheap squad option, but for now given the options we ha available he is certainly an upgrade in many respects

He's an honest pro who will put a shift in - is that enough? No, of course it isn't but in the absence of credible alternatives we are where we are.

Mctomminy would do a better job doing that. At least he would win a couple of headers.

Absaloutely. Martial has scored one goal in the last 4 months? WW had a good hand in our second goal in the lead up to the corner. He is a decent option to have. Easy run if games coming up now, will be interesting to see how he does.

They didn't buy anyone
They actually paid a fee of £3m to loan him for 6 months, so yes they bought him, he was not free plus we pay his wages we paid £3m for 5 and half months which would equate £25m for a 3+1 contract that our stupid board would give to Burnley for a 30 year 6’6 cart horse. He was no free plus his wages.

He's another Antony. In a sense he works hard and has some good attributes. Problem is they are missing key ingredients at the top level. Or they haven't showed them yet. We might get away with one of them on the pitch but not both of them. Not against top opposition anyway. We cant just have 2 of our front line running and giving easy passes and that's it. That said he did ok for his ability. Against some teams he will be useful or even last 20 mins etc. Saying he is better than Martial is ridiculous

We need a centre forward who can score goals. It's that simple.
Weghorst is not going to score us many goals. I think its very fair to say that our performances have dropped since he's been in the team
Saying that. I think he would be a good option off the bench if we need to start playing long balls into to the box in the last 5-10 minutes of a game

I don't think it would be reasonable to expect too much in the way of immediate scoring contributions given that he has hardly had time to train with the team yet. Still, I don't see how one could look at his first two games and feel really good about that. He had some good link-up and pressing contributions in his first game, and a bit more of the same yesterday, but in two 90s he's been largely completely devoid of any impact whatsoever at the sharp end of the attack, and has been largely a non-factor. Also, our attacking game in general has regressed in the two games he's started. A striker on a team like United has to offer a lot more than he has, so far. Still early days and all that, but he really has to up his contribution fairly dramatically to justify anything more than the occasional walk-on part.

Totally agree.

Worked hard, pressed well and held the ball up bringing others into play. That's the sort of player he is, and on loan, with options limited due to the potential takeover, I'm not sure what people expect.

There were more disappointing performances. Antony still looks out of his depth. Rashford was the only attacking player who delivered yesterday and he can't do it on his own.

What a load of rubbish. Our performances in tje 2nd half have dropped off because of the fixture list and games every three days. Also not enough quality or squad depth.

Wout is doing what he was brought in to do. Hes hardly had a chance, doesnt help that we have antony on one side who can only cross with inswingers off his left foot and rashford on tje otherside whos decsion making and playing in others is dubious at times.

You then rely on the fullbacks for crosses, wan bissaka isnt know for his quality going forwards, dalot is injured so that leaves shaw and malacia to proved crosses for wout. Not ideal chance creation for a target man is it?

I must have missed all these chances he fluffed to be slated so much. He was decent in the build up but didn't get the service in the right areas. Not his fault.

Fact is both Rashford and Antony look to cut in and score rather than pass so service is going to be limited. In general we need to mix up our play and if we're playing Werghorst we'll need to realise that a bit quicker.

Good link up play, pressing and won the ball from Arsenal defenders few times. A solid game.
And no, its not fair to say our performances dropped since he's been in the team.

Some of the criticism is way off. It's as if some have made their opinion in him and are going with it no matter what.

A fekin training cone. That poster definitely hasnt watched the game.

Just like every football team in the world. Who exactly were we likely to bring in in the current circumstances?

Whoever the long terms solution is upfront, they're not a player you're likely to get in January, even if the Glazers were prepared to release another £100 million.

So our performances haven't dropped since the city game because we've changed the way we play?
Yet you go on to say that we don't have the players to play crosses into the box to the one new player in the team?
Which is it?

I certainly wouldn't say it like that. The performances have mostly been the same the only big difference are the results. I think, we should be patient with the new player. It is a loan, lets see what he can bring to the team and make decision when it is clear. He certainly is a handful and can keep CBs occupied which then theoretically should give players like Bruno, Antony and Rashford more time and space to operate in. Bruno and Antony aren't really up to it currently, the guy who is in the team since 2 weeks isn't the one creating issues.

Currently. No one. But that doesn't mean Weghorst is the answer. Our football is more clinical without him in the team. Yes. His hold up play is good but that's not what made us dangerous in the previous 8-9 games. It was playing it in behind the defence.

He hasn't been bought, he's been loaned, no amount of juggling hypothetical figures changes that.

In reality we were never going to buy a Kane or Osimhen striker in the winter, which we will hopefully do in the summer. Wout as a 3rd choice striker is a good option. If Martial was fit then Wout would be on the bench anyway and a decent bench option. Personally we needed a player like him in the squad for this season as its clear Martial can not be relied on in terms of fitness wise. Wout did very well in terms of hold up/link up play, he provided a platform for Rashford, Bruno and Antony to play off of. Not as a good as Martial in that role but as a potential 3rd choice striker he's good.

If we bought Kane or Osimhen in the summer and kept Martial, i'd be happy having Wout as a 3rd choice striker.

I think the last two performances have been average to poor.
I'm not blaming it on Weghorst performances more so the way we've changed the way we play. There doesn't seem to be the same movement from the front three and the runs in behind the defence don't seem to be as consistent.

The temptation seems to be "get it to the big lad up front"

It was actually £2.6m as reported in most places. Yes, it would be nice not to have to pay anything for him at all, no fee and let Burnley pay half/some of wages. However this is not a young player being sent out on loan for development from a big club where you don't charge a fee and continue paying the wages.

The main reason we are in this position and having to rely on Weghorst is the unreliable Martial and Ronaldo doing us over.
