Would we have been better off buying Ozil rather than Sanchez?

I tell you who would have been a better buy.
a 17 y.o Haaland.

Either one of them would have failed. Arsenal players just didn't have the winning mentality. Post Fergie, the Arsenal teams while playing good football just seemed to lack the mental fortitude to get the job done.

Both these players fall in to that category.

Ozil would have been very lightweight as an 8 for us.

Wouldn’t of changed much
The team was unbalanced and had idiots like pogba and lingard knocking around

If I remember correctly, morata was way worse than Lukaku in every department, even donkey proficiency.
United fans have a particular dislike for Lukaku, but there's no way Morata has been anywhere near as good over his career as Lukaku has, that's saying something.

Not really. He’s been called lazy. Don’t need another Martial.

No, Ozil was completely finished by that point. He did nothing of note for Arsenal after signing his last contract extension and his career completely flatlined since, even more so than Sanchez.

Yep, Ozil has been shit and irrelevant since at least 2019.

Sanchez's career after United hasn't actually been that bad. He won Seria A with Inter and has been decent for Marseille.

What is the point of these hypothetical threads. plain stupid nonsense.
If only we all had super powered hindsight.

I felt at the time we should have signed Sanchez instead of Di Maria - as he was the better fit for the team

That is literally the entire reason internet forums exist - so people can chat shit on the internet.

You do realise you are not obliged to click on the ones you don't like, and definitely not obliged to engage with them?

Ozil was a bit of a curse.

Creativity of the whole team reduced whilst everything went through Ozil.

This kind of happened under Ole with Bruno until Ten Hag came.

He has a tattoo of the grey wolves, a right wing party from Turkey that has been responsible for many terrorist attacks.
Ah, I didn't know this. Need to look into it.

Going by the line-up at that point.

Manager: Mourinho
Mata and Lingard were in the starting 11, that correct? Or was it Miki? I’ guessing Ozil would replace Mata?

Who knows, interesting but I feel like Mourinho would have dropped Ozil soon enough for lack of effort. You’d have more creativity but no one to really finish. Unless he would get back to his old self suddenly. In that case you might have won the PL.

Players like Ozil aren’t really a thing anymore, at best they are converted to CM.

As bad as Sanchez was for United, the goldfish who always brought politics and his personal views into football can feck off.

Never thought about it. I have been losing sleep over whether we did the right thing in selling Tom McNulty to Liverpool in 1954 though. I still feel the fee of £8,000 was too low.

This was quite an interesting read.

In short, Sanchez was used very differently at United compared to how he was used at Arsenal and Barcelona. We were also playing very defensive football at times, and his confidence dipped as his role changed. It was a miss-match. Perhaps the right player but the wrong time? I'd be curious to see how the player would do right now if he was the same age and form as he was back then when we signed him.

My answer to the thread's question is no, I wouldn't have preferred Ozil. At least not at that particular stage in his career. Prime Ozil is a different proposition, though.

I remember Wenger being quoted as saying Sanchez leaving for United wouldn't have the same impact as RVP. It suggested he was past his peak.

I have looked through your post replies and you have contributed to hypotheticals before…

Ozil would have been just an alternate disaster. Funny though, I thought Sanchez was done physically when he left Utd maybe only suitable for a season in MLS. But he has had a decent few years at a very good level since at Inter and Marseille. I did not watch him at all since he left Utd but it would be interesting to hear what any Inter or Marseille fans on here think of him.

Back in Jan 2018 Manchester United signed Sanchez, many of us thought it was going to be amazing, turned out to be awful beyond compare. At the same time I think Ozil was in a similar contract position.

Do you think Ozil would have had a more successful career at Manchester United than Sanchez?

No.

Didn’t Rooney march into Ferguson’s office demanding he sign Ozil and Ferguson told him to feck off out of it?

Ozil was a huge talent but didn't have an elite player attitude at all.

Don't think it would've made any real difference as they were both past it. At least we dodged the biggest idiot of the two.

Morata instead of Lukaku wouldn't have made any difference in the long run either.

Yes. Anyone would have been better than Sanchez.

Ozil was lazy, but so was Pogba. He could have been useful to bridge the gap between Rooney and Bruno Fernandes.
