Would we have been better off buying Ozil rather than Sanchez?

Back in Jan 2018 Manchester United signed Sanchez, many of us thought it was going to be amazing, turned out to be awful beyond compare. At the same time I think Ozil was in a similar contract position.

Do you think Ozil would have had a more successful career at Manchester United than Sanchez?

I don't even remember how Ozil was playing back then. Why are you asking ?

Yes to both Ozil and Morata rather than Lukaku, honestly. Morata can at least bring people into play, control the ball consistently and play wide forward: I'd take him as a bench option over Martial, given relative consistency in being available. Lukaku lumbered around half the time he was here. Ozil likewise at least had some creative nous.

Ozil has always been a joke post 2017 so it won't make a difference to the results between him or Sanchez.

Sanchez was on his last legs at united. He needed some really good luck to stay relevant. Unfortunately it didn't came and soon his time was up. Same can be argued about Falcao and Depay but the latter two still have some strength in them after they left.

Just be happy you didn’t sign a fascist and let things be.

Possibly would have been more useful in a position we were relying on Mkhitaryan and Jesse Lingard. He probably wasn't at his best but I think he would have been a better signing. Instead we got Sanchez in a position where Martial /Rashford were excelling for us.

There isn't probably a single move that we made past 10 years that would have been better or worse, on its very own.

We’d just have been better off not signing Sanchez, no need for any other ifs

There have been so many what if moments for us this past decade. Would signing Thiago have saved Moyes' job? Would signing Kroos have saved LVG?

I liked Morata back then but the guy has been a disaster ever since leaving Madrid's bench to join Chelsea. Lukaku has been the better striker since this summer and it's not even close.

Would we rather have signed De Ligt instead of Maguire in 2019 though?

Probably a little yes. Don’t think it’s a particularly interesting debate though.

Ozil has been non-existent for the last 5-6 years, why would anyone think his transfer would benefit us, or him in any way? If anything, we have the super power to make promising/good players turn into nobodies, not the other way around.

Urm well Sanchez was genuinely horrendous. Ozil may have played a few nice passes. Yeah maybe?

Both would have been terrible signings overall.

What even is this thread?

"If only instead of betting all my savings on Brentford winning the champions league last season, I'd used it to bet on Aldershot Town winning the world cup instead"

If you don't like it - make one of your own. Or better yet - don't.

I'm happy not to. I'm still baffled though. What exactly do you think would have happened if we signed Ozil that would make it worth starting this insanely random thread?

thought about this almost everyday and im still not sure

Should also have bought Martin Keown from Everton rather than Pat McGibbon back in 1992

I think he'd have improved our midfield by playing the ball forward into space rather than sideways.

He'd have been inconsistent but when he was with it - we'd have benefitted, especially Rashford and Lukaku.

I think his time at the end at Arsenal was marred by the club silencing him afraid of the Chinese backlash. He had more to offer on the pitch.

I absolutely detest people who comment on threads they don't like and say things like this.

If you don’t like the content just ignore it and move on.

The last few years have shown us that mistakes come in many colours and sizes and Ozil would have been a different shaped feck up.

I have a weird feeling Morata would have been a better choice than Lukaku but not a massive breakout star.

For sure, but I also don't think Ozil would have set the world on fire here either. But he sure as feck would have fit into the side better and added some class ahead of Pogba in a playmaking sense as opposed to Sanchez who might be the most washed player we've ever signed (besides maybe Schwein and a couple others).

Also would have had the added effect of keeping Martial in the lineup when he was saving Mourinho's ass the first half of that season.

Would he have been the difference between winning a few cups or at least qualifying for the cl in jose's last/ole's first season? Probably not so in the end it wouldn't have mattered.

We'd have been better off buying some magic beans and burying them on the centre circle at Old Trafford than Sanchez.

Fecks sake. Are we back in 2010? What even is this thread? Behave yourself. Miserable git.

No, Ozil was completely finished by that point. He did nothing of note for Arsenal after signing his last contract extension and his career completely flatlined since, even more so than Sanchez.

Both are disaster. While Sanchez was a disaster on day 1, being wrong foot and wrong position-wise, Ozil would be the wrong characters for being too lay-back. He has none of the characters, work rate, fighting spirit of Eriksen or Bruno, only end up pointing fingers at team mates like Maguire.

In hindsight, we would be better off in keeping Makit. A younger, hungry squad players, cheaper of course, and possibly avoid the mistake on VDB.
