Women's Champions League 2023-2024 - the WCL continues without us

It is ... if you pay £7.99 per month.

What day of the month is it billed? I cant find anything on my account to see if I am subscribed or not. I have spent over an hour trying to find anything. I just clicked on MUTV from the main website and I could play the video of the game but I can not access anything that would be "my account" or something at all.

I am sorry I cannot help you with that as I do not subscribe. My understanding is that the billing date would be a month after you took out your subscription. Alternatively you may have signed up for the £29.99 per year option.

Apparantly I have an active automatic payment on my paypal account. But according to it they have not charged me anything.

Of course I understand your point, and the two laughing faces that followed. But I stick by my point - the Glazers and structure of the club is to blame. Not Russo.

Anyway, I still have a ticket for tonight that is going for free.

If that's the case then, join a foreign club. But no, she joined a direct rival. Of course she's going to get pelters for that.

Jean-Francois out of the return leg for PSG with a confirmed ACL injury. Looked bad on the pitch, awful how common these are in the women's game.

PSG only had to play 1 half so they come even more rested now, mabe time for fireworks tomorrow?

Just to complete the story and add the "what might have happened next" section:

I'm guessing Lyon and Barca are pretty happy with that.

:nono:  - OMG. Eidewalls sly dig at the current UCL format is SAVAGE!

Jonas Eidevall on there being only one WSL team in today's #UWCL group-stage draw: "We’re number four in Europe [in Uefa's coefficient rankings]. We can’t say that’s anyone else’s problem except our own. We need to improve. English teams have not done well enough in Europe."

Eidevall adds: "The Conti Cup group that MUFC are in now might be tougher than some UWCL groups. But [Uefa] need to grow all of women's football in Europe - that's really important. They can't only take [WSL] opinions into account."
He suggests growing the #UWCL with more teams.

But Eidewall is also daft.

How will keeping the same average teams that always been in the UCL aka Rosengård, Kopparbergs Göteborg (BK Häcken), Slavia Prague help grow european womens football? Are they arguing that is better for UEFA to try and keep those club alive and competitive rather than having new more powerful teams both financially and on the field from entering? The are not growing womens football, they are at best keeping status quo.

What the current seeding system does it to make sure the same average clubs stay in the UCL and new clubs find it difficult to enter, thereby making it less attractive for owners and sponsors to give money to new teams as the UCL route is blocked by teams of less sporting quality.

FC Rosengård is capped to like 1000-2000 fans per UCL game, when there a long list of clubs that could attract 50 000+ thousand fans that is unable to compete because of the current seeding system.

Why are coaches blabbing about this like they have no idea what they are talking about?

Its hilarious that Chelsea only made the UCL because Barcelona won the final or else they would also be in the Q round.

Noticed that Lyon thrashed Prague 9-0 and that's away from home !

And Prague are supposedly the Pot 2 team in the group

Another sign that the current system is not working

Brann women (Martin Ho's team) won 2-1. Given Lyon beat Slavia Prague 0-9 that group could see some wild results.
True. I do think that the WCL needs a complete overhaul though. A 9 - 0 in a group match is ridiculous.

OMG.

BK Häcken who Hammarby double slammed in Sweden has beaten Paris FC away, who eliminated Arsenal and Wolfsburg, what the heck is going on? :D

So Chelsea are winning 2-1 in Madrid, the ref awards this penalty to level it up

And then rules out Niamh Charles’ 95th minute winner for offside

It was outside the box, and it was a dive as well. The Chelsea player are lounging but Athena avoids her and then dives. So it could have been a yellow for Athena for diving or free kick.

The penalty however was correct as Kerr was offside and made #11 mark her and then fouled #4 in the back. Since #11 were focusing on marking Kerr who was offside (which #11 did not know she was clearly affecting the play)

But without VAR of course its going to be a lottery, you would not even need full VAR to get that right as a free kick instead of a penalty. It would take 5 seconds on a cell phone to watch that.

Yep, agree with that - wrong call on the penalty, it was way outside the box.

Fair call on the offside against Kerr - she is interfering with play. Mind you, I'm so old, I'd call offside in more or less all of these supposed "not interfering" judgements.

Definitely preferable to crappy referees with tech who get it wrong anyway

I'm happy there is no VAR in Women's footy
I am pleased that VAR is not used as well (apart from WC and WCL knockouts I think)

Leah Galton scored an excellent goal v West Ham, then the flag went up for offside. She simply looked to the sky, laughed, and got on with the game. It's refreshing.

Brann drew 1-1 with Lyon this evening, what a campaign they're having. Lyon lead the group on 10 points, Brann are second with 7 points and have now played Lyon twice so have to have a good chance of making the QFs.

Slavia Prague were due to play St Polten tonight in the other match in the group, but that's been postponed for obvious and tragic reasons.

Dazn have given up on their attempt to pay wall their YouTube channel for the WCL.

They're also opening up free to view coverage of some other women's football.

It's not obvious how it'll play out but I'd love it to mean that they'll try and get an actual broadcaster in the UK.

Hiding the best quality women's football - the WCL - on a YouTube pay channel was always a depressing idea. It's still very early days for women's football. The more available it is, the better for the growth of the game.

Brann beat Slava Prague 1-0 tonight to qualify for the QFs (with a match to spare!) as runners up in Group B. Lyon will top that group. The only points Brann have dropped so far were against Lyon. Their manager Martin Ho was Marc Skinner's assistant at United last season.

Barcelona and Benfica are through in Group A.

Chelsea have qualified from Group D. The other qualifiers in Group C and D won't get decided until the final round of group matches next week.

We now know the quarter finalists:
Group A - Barcelona and Benfica
Group B - Lyon and Brann
Group C - PSG and Ajax
Group D - Chelsea and Hacken

Tightest finish was in Group C where PSG spent a good chunk of the evening losing to Bayern and going out of the tournament. In the end a Georgia Stanway OG in the 88th minute got them the draw and that sent PSG through to the knockouts. Ajax won their game with Roma 2-1, a late OG decided that one as well!

Would London Bees had a chance of making it you reckon ;)

Have to say that, just like when our Men get knocked out, I now have zero interest in the CL! I'll probably watch the final though

Was thinking about whether I'd want Chelsea to win it and probably I would since it's good for the WSL in general

I must admit most of my curiosity is around the rise and fall of the various teams and countries involved.

Like no German team making the QF, despite their history of success in the WCL. Only one Spanish team, which reflects perhaps how dominant Barca are now.

It also shows how open the competition is outside that core that currently contains Barcelona, Lyon, Chelsea. And I will watch the matches between those top teams - because they're potentially the best games and show the standard we need to reach.

Lots of countries and leagues represented in those QFs - not just the richest ones. Partly of course a reflection of the seeding and qualification structure. But Real Madrid and Roma came at the bottom of their groups and Bayern won only one one match in theirs.

What happened in the draw today?

Ajax were drawn against PSG with Häcken and Chelsea the only balls left. And then they picked up Chelseas ball and put them against Ajax instead.

Does it mean Häcken and Chelsea were blocked from meeting each other since they were in the same group?

The draw:

Brann-Barcelona
Benfica-Lyon
Ajax-Chelsea
Häcken-PSG

Yep. Standard rule, but it's always a surprise when you see it live.

Quarter-final draw:
Brann v Barcelona
Benfica v Lyon
Ajax v Chelsea
Hacken v Paris St-Germain

Semi-final draw:
Brann/Barcelona v Ajax/Chelsea
Benfica/Lyon v Hacken/Paris St-Germain

A timely bump for this thread (we should be there!)

Ajax v Chelsea and Benfica v Lyon tonight.

Häcken v PSG and Brann v Barca tomorrow.

All the matches ended in away wins - so the QFs look likely to work out according to their seedings.
Ajax 0-3 Chelsea looks like game over for Ajax.
All the others were closer - all ending with 1-2 wins for the (seeded) away teams.

Assuming things go as expected that will make the semifinalists Barcelona, Chelsea, Lyon and PSG.

Nice to see she's getting a klopp style sending off. Also Arsenal women's fans are so much better then their mens. Every time chelsea loses

The final between Lyon and Barca is currently in the second half. I was planning on watching this from the start as soon as City made it 3-0 in the FA cup final, but things didn’t go to plan

Two teams who have between them won the last 8 titles and soon to be 9. Defending champions Barcelona against 8 x winners Lyon. And they look like two evenly matched teams.

Two England players in the Barca lineup in Bronze and Walsh. Ex Utd player Battle is on the bench.

Bonmati breaks the deadlock! Nice run, and her deflected shot beats the keeper to make it 1-0 to Barca.

Batlle comes on to replace Rolfo. Come on Ona!

Bonmati is such an important player for them.

Lyon are piling on the pressure but aren’t showing the quality needed to equalise. Hegerberg with a good chance from a header but misses the target.
