Wimbledon 2011

Is it me or once you get past Venus power serve, she's actually abit shit at you know, all the rest of the sport of tennis.

Pat Cash actually said at their best the Williams sisters would have given some men something to think about. He neglected to say he meant an exhumed Fred Perry - maybe.

She is utter wank, and it's a indictment of just how fecked up the women's game has been that someone this unathletic could have won so many titles.

So very wrong. They're not at the top of their game but when they are they are extremely good tennis players because they can over power anyone.

There is no finesse to them, overpowering is simply down to brute strength, imho, not really the point of tennis.

Shes abit wank, and I stand by this. Strong yes, decent? No.

There's no finesse but what do you mean by not decent? She's no Roger Federer but she has found her own way of winning loads of grandslams. That means she's good at tennis.

If I can serve an ace every single time I'm fecking great at tennis.

No, it means you're just quite strong and got the timing right.

In that match, Date-Krum had a far greater variety of shots, Venus is like Rudeski except in the womens game there are very few who can find her out as a one-trick power-serve pony that she is.

Tennis players should be well rounded, with a variety of shots, the fact is Venus is just a lot stronger than the other women because she's some sort of gigantic, muscular freak.

And better at tennis because strength is a factor of tennis as is serving and ball striking.

If a footballer is an unbelievable goalscorer but is a bit crap at other finer aspects of the game, then he is great at football. He might not be as good as the Messi's of this world but he's a fine footballer.

Look, I'm all for finesse and style. I'm a Federer fan after all. For me, he's probably the best sight in sport I've ever seen and in addition he's been the most successful tennis player of all time. So that combination is perfect for me. But success is a part of that. It's not just about style. Had Federer won those grandslams just bashing aces about, he wouldn't be as great as he is but he'd be a fine tennis player.

She's got 5 wimbledons FFS.

Let's face it, Federer had a period of domination that coincided with the demise of Sampras and the very early stages of Nadal's development.

I'm not disagreeing she has won titles, I'm just saying she appears better than she is in the womens game because she just uses brute strength to overcome female opponents, which doesn't take skill, just strength, obviously she has an element of skill, but shes still essentially a female Rudeski.

What has football got to do with tennis? Great goalscorers don't necessarily need a great all round game because there are several players behind him supporting him, even then, Inzaghi won't be remembered in the same breath as Pele.

My point stands, get Venus playing tennis like Date-Krum did today and she gets found out for not being very good at the game of tennis, however, she is very good at hitting the ball very hard.

Your point is really pointless and crumbles instead of standing. Hitting the ball hard is a part of tennis if you haven't noticed. Someone whose won 5 Wimbledons being 'not very good at the game of tennis' is a laughable claim.

Well that's rubbish but probably not for this thread. Federer also won those titles in a time when the grass has gotten slower and slower almost a kin to clay favoring players who play solely from the back of the court more. He'd probably have won even more Wimbledon titles if it was as quick as it used to be. But as I said this is for another thread.

You seem to be taking the point very literally, in the context of the grand scheme of tennis, she's shockingly bad at actually playing tennis, which is a game I agree requires hitting the ball hard, but also requires the ability to play delicately, to play intelligently, the moment you start asking Venus questions and take her out of her comfort zone of aces, she's very playable, get her in a rally as Krum kept doing, at the age of 40 and suddenly Venus just looks laboured, hoping her power gets her through it.

She beat Date-Krum because she was stronger than Date-Krum, but if you want a highlight of the shots in that game, Venus' best are all aces, Krum's would be a wide range, lobs, drop shots, volley's right along the line. You know, the rest of the shots which constitute tennis that Venus doesn't tend to bother with.

EDIT: Basically my point is - yes Venus gets results - only via virtue of her strength, which is a honed natural asset, the evidence for this is the strength of her sister.

Thing is, I agree with every word but having said that she is still very good at tennis. If you're good at one thing involved in a sport and it makes you better than the rest (or most of the rest) then you're good at it. You're not very well rounded but you're good/very good at it. I just disagree with your logic. I too prefer more well rounded players like Henin who was fantastic to watch and played the game gracefully combining so many elements well, rather than brutes like the William sisters.

Yes, I know it still means basically she is good at tennis but it's just a narrow view, there are far better tennis players amongst the women who don't win as much as her simply because they can't handle that strength. There is little to no parity. The muscles of the williams sisters are totally unnatural.

Am I right in thinking that if it's raining at the start of play and the roof goes over that it stays that way all day no matter the weather outside?

Think that's only for the game that starts with the roof in use.

The next game gets it open if it's sunny I think.

What the feck is acutally wrong with her :wenger:

Heather Watson gets a consolling message from Rio :D

Anyway, we finally got 2 talented british women players - Who do you think will have the better career of Robson or Watson?

Raonic got injured while a break up in the first set today :(

A real pity because he's a great talent but as a Nadal fan, I'm happy Rafa won't be facing him because he's a great player!

Rochus has disappeared in recent years. Oh and it's great to see that he won the first set. It would be wonderful if both Raonic and Del Po could go out today!

Oh and Soderling Hewitt tomorrow. That's a potential cracker!

Hewitt never comes up with anything. He'll probably lose in three sets. And I'm anticipating a Murray exit today - it's waiting to happen.

Raonic is out and Del Po is a set to love down. Come on Rochus!

Hewitt will lose but he won't go down without a fight which is why I love watching him play. He'll probably take it to 4 or 5 sets!

My beloved Li Na plays this evening in the Central vs Lisicki. after soderling/hewitt, so I think her match will start at least at 17.
