Willy Kambwala | 2023/24 Performances

I’m liking the look of him. He was more aggressive today but also showed composure.

Should start the remaining PL games as there’s nothing on the line. Same with other youth players.

I wouldn't go that far. I don't think he's a starter but a definate option.

We have Maguire, Lindelof, Evans, Varane, Martinez and Shaw who have been starting at CB these last two years.

The first three can't play a high line. Varane is out of contract and Martinez has basically missed the season.

We probably need 3 CBs to add to the above. I think Willy can be one of them but we need established players as well.
This is actually not true. Under Ten Hag our line is actually highest with Maguire and lowest with Martinez. Under Ole our line was higher with Lindelof and Maguire than any point under Ten Hag.

So this season we've seen Garnacho play more while Kambwala and Mainoo come through. Maybe the overrated, overpriced players we've been constantly playing for years can take a step back and we trust more out youth.

Then got injured again and the 18 months turned into two seasons of missed development.

I'm actually quite surprised he's featured in the first team at all considering the amount of games he's missed in the last two years. But if ten Hag feels you're ready to contribute in the first team then he will play you.

There's further development still to come if he can steer clear of injuries which have blighted him in the last few seasons. But in the game today he displayed that he has the ability and potential to be a strong dueller both on the ground and in the air. He has the recovery pace too which is important to quell the threat in defensive transition. And even though he made a mistake where he mis-judged the flight of the ball which sent Nunez away down the left flank, he recovered the situation well when most of our other CBs would be toast in that situation.

He needs games and mistakes will likely be made. And having watched him play at youth level for Sochaux, he was a very well rounded CB who was strong in the duels with recovery pace and the ability to pass short and long. I hope he can transfer that ability to first team football, and that will hopefully become more evident as he plays more games and progresses as a young CB.

Yeah I absolutely agree. I remember one of his first games for the u18s and the mic was picking up our coaching staff who talked him through the entire game. It smacked of someone who had relied on their physical advantages so much that he had maybe fallen behind tactically. I remember thinking how important the next few years would be for his development, and he was injured for most, if not all of it. I had practically written him off in my head. Seeing him make match day squads shocked me.

His performance today was promising. I think we are crying out for a defender of his type. I don't see a good reason why we don't play him for the rest of the league games and see what we have. He's comfortably quicker than anyone ahead of him and just as strong. We'd hopefully start to see our back-line play on the front foot more, which would be refreshing.

When he's called upon, he's done well. Should get more games considering no one else can stay fit.

This is actually not true. Under Ten Hag our line is actually highest with Maguire and lowest with Martinez. Under Ole our line was higher with Lindelof and Maguire than any point under Ten Hag.

It's a myth that won't go away. Varane and Martínez were one of the lowest defensive lines in the whole league last season. With Maguire, both under Ole and ETH we played a higher line, than with Varane.

People just assume Varane has good recovery pace, and think that's all you need to play in a high line.

Yep agreed. I saw enough of him today to give him a run in the team. Desperate times lead to opportunities and I think he now deserves his.

His profile suits the system we're trying to implement more. He's physical, plays on the front foot and is decent on the ball. We have nothing to play for in the league so might as well give him a run...Worst case it increases his value for a sale or a loan and best case he stakes a claim and develops into a good squad player or more.
We need 3 CBs for next season, would be great if he is one of them...

Agreed.

And I was of the opinion that ten Hag wouldn't select him this season based on the games he's missed in the last few years which has dented his own personal development as a CB/RB imo. But he was very highly rated when we bought him as a youth player beating out Liverpool for his signature and he was said to be the France u17s captain.

I think we should buy two CBs of the requisite level who can be part of the first team and hopefully utilise Kambwala as a rotation option similar to how Liverpool utilise Jarell Quansah with Van Dijk and Konate the first choice pairing.

I think if we can have the following four options (below) going into next season, then I feel we'll be heading into the right direction.

Martinez, Branthwaite, Diomande, Kambwala

His performance felt a bit like what Tuanzebe could have offered against them a few seasons back but got injured in warmup

Correct you need to have mobility, athleticism and physicality to defend the wide areas and read the game so you can step up and dominate your attacker. Kambawla played fantastic today but Maguire recent redemption was not to be underestimated in helping him and having a decent game too.

Yeah, almost another sliding doors moment for us potentially. I always felt Tuanzebe could have done a job or at least be more promising than a back peddling Lindelof. That injury and then him being out of the team, playing right back, not playing etc really set back his development. Hear he's doing well as a makeshift right back for Ipswich atm.

Now a couple years later, it may happen for real for another youth product.

Absolute disgrace of a booking. That was a cracking tackle. Not even a foul.

Back in the day, text book tackle. But studs up now is almost automatically a foul and a booking. Even if it's 100% on the ball like it was today.

Thought the kid did really well today. Made a mistake in the 1st half but what joy to see a United centre back with the speed to get back and rectify it!

Not sure how good he is on the ball, haven't seen enough of him. Should we be worried if he becomes a first choice and we're expecting him to play it out from the back?!

Should be ahead of Lindelof in the pecking order. He was really good today.

Seems a good athlete which is very important for a CB these days if you want proactive football risking the 1 v 1s. You can't necessarily manufacture that easily - see Lindelof and Maguire.

We'll see, hard to say on a few games. If he plays until the end of the season we'd have much more insight. Probably the passing could improve, I think you're going to need that at a top club.

One really weird moment where he legged it up the pitch ahead of the ball. Strange against this Liverpool side with so much dynamism to leave the team so open. Not sure if that was a managerial idea or a brain fart but overall I think he can be happy with today.

Great performance, couple of moments but did well in his duels.

His passing isn't very good though but you could maybe put that down to nerves or rustiness.

General sentiment seems to be, he looks half decent give him a chance in the last 7 league games as we've nothing to play for.

So that's it. He's not kicking another ball before the pre-season tour.

Is that when he ran 50 yards back only for Maguire to clean up the moment Willy slotted in behind him ?

If so, I think he just got excited and forgot where he was ! But he ran back twice a quickly as AWB would have done. Full effort.

Yeah he just had a moment to be fair. One of those moments where if you want to give a young lad a chance you sort of have to allow for it.

That’s tasty. Branthwaite could probably play on the left if we were in a pickle. It could help us use Shaw more carefully while we decide what to do about the LB spot in the longer term

It is interesting that he was so highly rated at youth level. 4 million was not pocket change for a player of that age back then. I remember there being some hype around him and he looked dominant at the level he was at before he came to Utd. I suppose there is still the slim chance that he is still a big talent after all his injury woes. I hope so for him. He seems game and handled himself very well today.

I’m not totally sure why but I feel like he might end up like someone like Fosu Mensa or Tuanzebe. He’s going to need loads of games and trust to develop and it seems like he is the very last choice at the club currently. He’s not doing his chances of getting a squad place next year any harm but I wouldn’t be totally surprised to see him go out on loan either. Getting 10 games here next season isn’t going to be much use to him whatever happens.

Would be nice but Ten Hag has his job to play for. If we get battered 5-0 by Arsenal whilst having senior CB's fit it won't be a good look.

He's had his job to play for all season when we've been shipping goals and chances left right and centre so I'm not sure the look really matters at this stage.

It probably earns him a bit more credit to set his stall out to look at players like Kambwala, Amad and see what they can do - there's a logic to it over and above what the results are because at this stage there's very little to play for in the league.

Plenty of incidents showing good pace, strength, marking tightly on set pieces and some well timed sliding tackles to win the ball. Also several headers and happy enough pulling wide and receiving a pass then playing a decent pass to a teammate so comfortable enough on the ball

Done about as well as you can expect from a 19 year old who nobody is exactly hyping up as a top talent young CB. So well done to him, didnt do much wrong in one of our biggest matches of each season

More than happy to see him play the next game even if some of the other CBs were fit.

Edit - He's also not just a 19 year old but he's started just 1 league game before today. So considering his genuine lack of experience as opposed to being a 19 year old who has played 40 games and people still talk about lack of experience, that was a hell of a performance

He had a very good performance but I actually thought Liverpool were poor in parts they didn't really have a sustained attack and so many of the players were drawn into one vs one scenarios which for an athletic defender can be easier to defend compared to have dealing with overloads which more disciplined teams inevitably conjure up against this current United side.

I thought Liverpool played into United's hands by spreading everything through the channels and at times overplaying, i'd like to see how he performs against Bournemouth and Palace away where the atmosphere and motivation will likely be significantly more flat among the squad to see how he copes.

Liverpool were certainly poor at finishing off their chances but most of them were not involving Kambwala and it was the other United defensive players like Dalot and AWB who would have been punished if they had been more clinical. They did have a Diaz one at the end where he reacted fast enough to beat Kambwala for the ball and blaze it over the bar but he was also in the better position so it was expected he would get there first. If he smashes it in I wouldnt have called that a mistake

With ball, he played with extra caution. It’s understandable for a young player thrown into a high pressure game like this.
He will play more next. I would like to see how quickly he can start playing with real confidence. At that point, we can find out if his passing and ball carry are on good level. Anyone watching youth games knows those? Is he good at passing and ball carrying?

Been fairly good whenever called upon.

Could be a mainstay in the team for years to come.

If he can stay fit and be decent, better than having potentially world class defenders who are always injured.

Strong performance especially under current circumstance.

I wouldn’t be opposed to see him more on the regular ahead of Lindelof.

Thought he was good, he has all the physical attributes to play in first team. Not sure how good his heading ability is but he was good dealing with ground duels.

The recovery pace he showed when he lost duel vs Nunez was amazing, shame senior players are letting down young players.

He should play every league game, looks like a potential gem.

If ETH get to stay next season, and that is a big if, he should show his greatest strength as a manager which is bringing in young players.

I personally see no harm for ETH for playing him all games from now until the end of the season. His ball control looks more composed than Maguire and he looks just as good in term of defensiveness. There is a big reward for ETH in doing this, he can prove a point that he can bring his strength and reduce the neccessity to splash out big cashes for new player, something the owners and fans would definitely love. Lindelof has been poor while Martinez and Varane spent more time in the hospital than on pitch so I say giving him the chance to show his potential, we are not fighting for CL place anymore anyway and we should be able to secure Europa with him and Maguire defensively. The remaning CB options are just so unfit to play till the end.

Good to see him have some bright moments. A few more games should tell us if he is good enough on the ball.

I think he should go out on loan next season though, he is at a point in his development where he needs to play 30-35 first grade games next year.

You have actually watched youth games of Sochaux?
What is your profession?

I'd argue that he needs to stay here next year. Especially if there's a new manager.

There's 8 Europa League group games next year. Throw the domestic cups into the mix and there's every chance he could start 20- 25 games plus. That would be fine for his development alongside coming on from the bench.

If he is gonna head out on loan, I hope we do proper research in terms of which team would suit his development the most. I also think it's important that he stays around for most or all of pre season.

Made a few errors and looked a bit shaky on the ball. Really good defensively though and for a young player stepping in to a game against Liverpool he did great. He deserves to get another start over Lindelof.

Not looked out of place or made any big mistakes in his appearances so far. Teenager, great athlete….its only two games though, but taking his chances and with the current situation earned the right for more until the end of the season.

Remember there being a fanfare when we signed him originally as perhaps a potential star cb, signed him then he got injured for ages from memory, so good to see he has got himself back. Considering the number of centre backs we really should be moving on in the summer, he could save us a fair amount of money this summer as we probably need three cbs, he could earn the right to be one of them before the end of the season.

Good performance, seems to get better with each game.

It would be great if we could start him over the next 7 games. There's pretty much zero to play for in the league (unless there is a seismic bottling from both teams directly above us) and he'll only get better with games. Getting such a free swing at any point in the season is rare. It'd be great if we could take advantage of it. And having at least 1 constant at CB for a bit would be nice. But I suspect ETH will swap him out for whichever senior CB is fit first.
