Why don't we sign central midfielders?

The sad reality is that McTominay or Fred would have improved us yesterday
I’m really failing to see the logic in us offloading Fred tbh. We got 8m for him, and if we aren’t going to replace him then I’d rather have him available on the off chance he’s decided to have a good day.

It's hugely frustrating. We'll sign one more (at best) and continue to plod along with the likes of McTominay sat on our bench as cover when we know we could've cashed in for a respectable fee this summer. It feels like active sabotage now.
What do we do if/when Casemiro gets injured? It’s frightnening really.

If we don't bring someone in to replace him then I can't see any logic in it.

I've seen more rumours alone in two days in us signing a back-up LB than I have ,during any period this summer I may add, in us bringing in another midfielder outside of the links to Amrababt , which could be bs anyway.

ETH may be content with the options he has in the middle of the pitch.

Khephren Thuram, can’t understand why we don’t sign him.

We had more than enough time to scout. I am sure there are a few 30-40m top talents around somewhere we could have gotten for a decent price with lots of skills

Kouadio Kone, Khephren Thuram are (potential)answers to our problems. Press resistant, physical ball carriers. I don't understand what our scouting team, director of football(Murtough) and ETH are doing with the midfield. To me these two names i mentioned are obvious solutions to some of our problems(build up, retaining possession, controlling games better...), maybe I'm just dumb - I don't know. Another two potential solutions are Matheus Nunes(who is going to City apparently, of course) and Ryan Gravenberch(ETH's old associate and his FDJ's replacement at Ajax).

These are Frenkie de Jong-like players which we desperately need and the club refuses to solve the build up/press resistance/ball retention issue and instead brings Mason Mount, attacking midfielder...

Yeah the bench yesterday was of a team going for top 8. We always need to spend a ton of money…and we now need to spend it once again.

It's a huge concern about his judgement if he feels a back up LB and third choice goalkeeper are more pressing needs for the team than a midfield signing.

Yeah that's worrying to say the least and really hope it's still not the case by Thursday

Why don't we sign midfielders? It's the United way now to play without one! :D

Nunes from wolves would be absolutely boss. Obviously we'd never sign him and he'll go to city because reasons

These are the players we need to be after but we mainly look for the overpriced, established option

Well I wanted Bissouma, who looked great for Spurs yesterday. There's lots of good players out there, it's just our scouting is garbage and we end up with Mount and Antony. Hojlund is very raw too and this place could turn toxic if he doesn't hit the ground running
2 things
1. If we had bought him at that time we would’ve had another MG type situation on our hands.
2. it took him a full year and a different coach to find a couple off (and that’s all it’s been so far) of top performances

Well we scouted Thuram & Todibo when Nice played Lille the other week. Still amazed scousers haven't made concrete move for him

I'm just watching Kovacic against Sheffield United. Considering it was clear that ten Hag was after a ball carrying midfielder, which would have complimented both Casemiro and Bruno, I'm very surprised we didn't push hard for him. Actually, he was arguably the closest attainable player to De Jong in terms of style of play.

Because we are poor at recruitment and fail, every summer, to bring players in to the point that we are ahead and not behind.

We’ve bought fewer outfield players this summer than City, who have just won the treble.

Arseholes, the lot of them.

I expected us to buy more talents this summer. We always scout them, but never buy

I don’t understand why we haven’t signed a central midfielder this summer.

Surely this was one of our biggest priorities

Normally people on here would be moaning that no one is available but this year, there have been quite a few quality ones available that would have improved that area of the team immensely, like Caicedo, Bellingham, Rice, Lavia, Kovacic, etc

They also lost more.

We need at least two. We don't even have one on the bench (bar youths who have not had a taste before).

The only midfielder we have that I want to see still here in 18 months time is Mainoo. The rest are all either past their best or just not very good.

The club absolutely have to target some proper central midfielders. We can’t play yo-yo vertical football every game

We need a CM, CF, RW & LB.

But yes, we can't continue to neglect the central midfield.

Regardless of profile it does feel like we are 1 body light. You'd imagine Casemiro and Eriksen will have various niggles throughout the rest of the season.

I think central midfield is such an important position that if you play 2 there you should have 5 in your squad.

Maybe if we had good cover at full back someone like Mazraoui could provide cover.

Maybe Amorim will bring Collyer through.

Tell me another quality box to box midfielder in the last 20 years... From United I mean.

Roy Keane? Just outside 20 years i suppose but I didn't know that was what the criteria was.

Why box- to- box though? I think players like Carrick, Scholes etc would make a huge difference.

Pogba was hardly box to box either, as he was often shockingly lazy defensively.

If Amorim wants to set us up along similar lines to Sporting, or a variation of that, he'll be prioritising bringing in midfield reinforcements.

Today we only had 2 CM players available, with 3 others unavailable and when you look at the age profile of Casemiro and Eriksen, it just shows how weak we are in that vital department.
