Why don't our players score hat-tricks anymore?

Tomorrow will complete our sixth consecutive season without a league hat-trick. 232 games.

Tomorrow will also see our last hat-trick scorer in the league retire from football. He left the club four years ago.

I think he left a season too early. Just a class footballer in my opinion. I think he was the top scorer throughout the leagues as well that season - if memory serves me correctly.

I guess he didn't expect Sir Alex to retire and playing for Moyes was possibly not in his plan.

In a cohesive team he probably could have stayed until around 2017.

He burnt a lot of bridges coming to us, hopefully he feels it was worth it despite only getting one season before the club's downfall.

I hope so as well. Playing a crucial role in a title winning team hopefully made it all worthwhile.

Remember the last league hat-trick? van Persie vs Villa to seal the league 4.5 years ago. That's 167 league games ago.

Even Leicester and Bournemouth have two each and they've played respectively one and two seasons less in the PL.

To put this into context, Lukaku managed to score a hat-trick for WBA vs United, moved to Everton, became their all-time PL top scorer and moved to United; all after United's latest league hat-trick.

From averaging over 3 hat-tricks per season in Fergie's final four years, we've barely managed 3 hat-tricks altogether since he left and none of them in the PL.

So why don't our players score hat-tricks anymore? Don't get enough chances? Don't have the hunger? Poor finishers? Lack of composure?

A dead right flank

One creative midfielder.

Even Norwich players are bagging hat-tricks these days :( Will we get one this season?

A proper, top class, selfish, goal-hungry centre-forward. You don't necessarily need one to win things or be a good team (although it helps!), but statistically this is where the vast majority of hat tricks come from.

It's telling that Zlatan didn't get one. You hear a lot now about how good he was that first season, and 28 goals is certainly an achievement. But my overriding memory of him that season is of the disappointing misses as much as the goals - he should have turned so many of those braces into hat tricks.

If either Rashford or Martial truly succeeds at earning our #9 spot this season, we'll see at least one. I'm not sure if either will, though. Rashford has the drive and determination, but possibly not the profile of that sort of player - the thing he strives for seems to be to play well, rather than to score goals. Martial is more of a hard-nosed goal-getter, but I'm not sure he has the drive or the hunger.

Time will tell!

It is better that the team wins instead of one player trying to be selfish.

Mata should have one against Liverpool at Juanfield a few years but Rooney took the penalty instead (and missed). Ibra might have got one eventually had he not got that injury but other than that we haven't really had an outstanding striker for years so it should be no surprise.

Daniel James is my best bet this season simply because I can see him having a blinder, scoring two screamers and then coverting a penalty Rashford let him took because he is on a hat trick. Otherwise, no, we are not close to a one.

"Why don't our players score more than one goal a game anymore?"

The outcome of hiring defensive managers. If Lampard was our manager, Greenwood would have two hatricks by now. If Pochettino was our manager Even our average players would have hattricks as well.

Your Poch fetish is genuinely interesting, have you spoke to a specialist about it?

Even the greatest strikers ever to have played the game never converted every one of their chances into a goal and we are lucky to create four chances a game, I can say no more.

The only hat trick we could get this season is if Ole pulls a top four finish out of one.

Am I right in Zlatan is the only player to have got a hattrick in any competition since this time? (St. Etienne?)

That is some sad shit.
