Why did we buy Fred?

Get him on. Fellaini and Matic doing enough to help out the defenders. Can't be worse than Ander, plus we need someone to pick the right passes when we get to counter.

No, but we can see the patterns of what Mourinho likes in a midfielder and what type of midfielders are left out. Ander was soon out of the team, Andreas doesnt get a game. Nobody loves Fellaini or Matic more than Mourinho and we also play with Pogba who is tall and strong too. Then theres the player Mourinho created an award just to praise, McTominay.

So does Fred fit the profile of the players who lost their place with him as manager, or didnt get much of a chance like Ander and Fred, or like the players who Mourinho hypes up more than anyone else - Fellaini, Matic and McTominay?

I think its pretty obvious Fred doesn't fit the mould of Mourinho's midfielders at United. Now if he was playing every week regardless of form like Matic, then it would suggest he's Mourinho's pick and he has a plan for him. But he doesnt play much.

Games like today are why you pay £50 million for a player. They are players who are going to get you a result in a big game. Mourinho clearly doesnt trust him to do that
Or more likely, he fecked it up this signing like he has done for the vast majority of his signing.

How do you know that? Where has Mourinho said that he has chosen each and every player? Where has he said he chose Fred?

Who was our supposed last club signing for the first team before Fred?

Who was our supposed last club signing for the first team before Fred?
Every player who doesn't play good. Unless he suddenly starts playing good (like Lindeloff) in which case he instantly becomes a Mourinho signing.

Nobody knows. But I do know Mourinho has said in the past that he doesn't tend to pick the players his teams sign. The types of players, the profiles, the areas that need improvement, and maybe a nod after a player has been selected for him sure. But did Mourinho go to Woodward and say "Get me Fred" ?

That would be out of character. And thats not even taking into consideration that Fred is almost the opposite of the players Mourinho tends to select in midfield

Did Mourinho say this during his time here? I mean at Chelsea and Real we definitely know that's how things are structured. IMO Fred was a Mourinho signing.

I think he said it before, but again if things were different here it would be out of the pattern that Mourinho has had before. So that would be strange

You have to ask why a £50m man is sitting on the bench in our biggest game of the season so far.

What is he thinking now? He could've been playing at City and getting regular games. Instead he's warming our bench.

Not sure what to think of Fred other than reserving judgement until he gets more minutes to build rhythm.

Was questioning his buying, and i thought he played bad the last time. But was shut down by a few caf ‘experts’.

If this guy can’t be trusted defensively, he must be bloody awful to be more useless than Matic atm

Yeah not like Mahrez played in this league before or anything.

Fred came here from a fecking Ukrainian league. It actually might take some time to adjust given how shit their league is.

Well Sanhez came from Arsenal where he spent 5 years and he looks like shiit...so there's that.

He's still be better than matic and Herrera were today.

He's also looked shit the last 0.5 year at Arsenal, we all thought that it's because he's sulking. Seems he might have not been sulking after all.

Mahrez had a shiity patch of form as well, both in the season after the won the title and also last year when he was denied the City move.

Besides it's irrelevant, Fred has shown in previous games he could be counted on and a game like this where we started 3 super pacy forwards, was screaming for a mobile MF with a great passing range.

He hasn't shown much better passing than Herrera has for us and today he was so much out of his depth, despite his achievements for us and experience in the league.

Was very confused why we were buying a 5'7'' midfielder when everyone and their grandma know about Mourinho's obsession with tall men but I'm guessing it was more Woodward's decision to beat City to it, just like with Sanchez.

Not only has he shown much better passing but lately he's shown better shooting from outside the box than Herrera as well.

But sure as hell he's a far better passer than Matić and Fellaini, but them 2 are Mourinho's favourites so…

Well actually Matić stats of passes per game and completed % is better than Fred's. Fred's making 1 key pass per game whereas Matić, who's been no doubt bad this season, is making 0.6. So no, he's not a far better passer really. That's his problem. He's not really better than the rest of our midfielders so that he can bench them.

Feel bad for the lad, I follow him on Insta and he's constantly posting pictures of his kit in the Brazil and United changing rooms, yet he's hardly playing football for both.

Personally, I don't see anything to suggest he's an upgrade on what we currently have our squad, you've got to give him more time but for the outlay of money we've paid, I doubt we've got value for money though as he's looked like he is struggling to keep up with the pace of the league.

Matić had shiitload more time than Feed and keep in mind Matic mostly passes the ball backwards or sideways, whilst Fred is actually passing the ball forward more often than not. Besides you've watched the games, have you? You've seen that Fred is far better when it comes to passing than any other MF we have bar Pogba.

Mourinho gives the club a list of the players he wants in a position and then leaves it up to the club to get one of them. No idea if Fred was his first choice, second choice or a bit further down the list, but it is very very unlikely that the club signed him without Mourinho wanting him at all.

Fred may not be tall, but he is fast, athletic and quite strong for his size. That fits Mourinho.

Per 90 their stats are pretty much the same then. And yes, I have watched the games and I still cannot say that Fred's passing is better than anybody else's than Pogba's, that's his biggest problem. I don't think that passing is Fred's biggest forte.

Then we'll hafto agree to disagree. Stats, as you're probably well aware can be very misleading, you keep observing though advanced stats, I'll watch the games and we're both happy.

He wasn't amazing all the time either

He sure as hell knew how to buy players that fitted hes teams.
When buying players you also need balance. A team with 11 Ronaldos not gonna work.
Im fully aware of Djemba, Kleberson, Taibi gang. Every manager has some misses. Its how reality is. But look at some of hes signings:

Ronaldo, Solskjær, Schemichel, Keane, Vidic, Evra, Cantona, Irwin, Van Der Sar, the list go on and on....

Even in hes last season everyone screamed for a midfielder. What he do? Go buy us Van Persie and won the league.
Even to this day with the millions spend, our best player is De Gea which was one of Fergies last signings. That Ferguson was not good at signings is one of the dumbest myths out there.
