Why did United buy Bayindir?

Now, I'm not saying he's terrible (and this thread could have been made at any point since his signing, it's not a reaction to a single mistake). I couldn't say. Not seen enough of him. Just enough to know that he's not at the level required for United. And I think pretty much everyone knew that when he signed. There were stories about Fenerbache fans being glad to see him go after having suffered two injuries and not really been at it after in terms of concentration, making too many sloppy mistakes.

The only quotes from the club at the time were from Murtough: "Altay is an excellent addition to our squad and adds further quality to our already strong group of experienced goalkeepers. Having consistently performed at a high level in a strong European league, he has the qualities to support us in achieving our ambitions across all competitions this season and beyond."

We paid 4.3m for him, while we sold Matej Kovar to Leverkusen at the same time for the same price. Ingenious. Last season when Onana's form was in absolute free fall there was no serious candidate to come in and take the heat off for a minute, or push Onana to raise his level (something we've always needed for Luke Shaw, and every major club needs healthy competition).

Why would United be signing a keeper of whom there were doubts about their progression and their mental resilience?

I certainly think we need a number two, not just to improve on Bayindir, which we obviously do, but to actually challenge Onana.

Two mistakes. Not his fault, cant put a player in who hasnt played football at all for months and expect him to deliver

I think Kovar went for slightly more than we paid for Altay but it all came down to being able to book the entire Kovar fee in last seasons accounts whilst spreading out the cost of his replacement over five years giving us more financial flexibility. A rotten short sighted decision even without the benefit of hindsight but the consequence of a terrible recruitment strategy and paying wildly inflated fees for average players.

Quality control
Of course Ten Hag saw something in him. What else is new? Bald piece of shit.

Why did we buy any of the dross we bought in the past few years? Because Ten Hag

Was he the best candidate available? We obviously need a backup for Onana in case of injuries.

It never made sense - even his highlight videos were comical. He just seemed to have no control.

Bizarre transfer considering competent and reasonably cheap backup-level keepers are a dime a dozen nowadays

Let's not beat around the bush.

No more do we keep on passengers.

He's a fair few levels below Romero, and not good enough to be our no2. Sell up.

Three words. Erik Ten Hag. Maybe the worst United manager EVER.

Kovar left because he thought he could get first choice at Leverkusen, something he's failed at. We didn't willingly ship him out and he'd have probably been our cup goalkeeper and played as many games if he was willing to stick around.

This is sad but true. Even the Youtube vids never made him look good. He's just not got the level required. Simple as that. Probably do alright in a smaller league, for a lesser side.

I actually don't think this one was a Ten Hag driven transfer. He would've probably had us go for that Dutch shithouser we were briefly linked to.

Dickie Arnold misheard a phonecall from Ten Hag requesting expenses for a trip to Turkey to "buy new hair".

I want him arrested for the crimes he has committed against this football club. There was always something off with that gormless loon. Should have trusted my instincts with his first ever HEH. Bald mutant doing hehs all the time.

The same reason we bought every other rubbish player we have. The best back up keeper we’ve ever had was probably valdes or Romero.

Yeah, I think this was more Murtough. I doubt ETH even knew who Bayindir was and the same with Butland.

I remember thinking at the time we bought him hat it was a weird transfer. He wasn't some big talent, he didn't look very good on tape and Turkish fans weren't impressed by him. Unfortunately, he hasn't done anything to change my opinion of him (although he hasn't played much). Just seems like a very mediocre player.

I feel like I'm going insane when I see so many people praise Romero. He was a terrible keeper.

He'd flap at every cross and the few times we played him in the league he let in goals a man united keeper should be saving.

Yeah, Romero had a similar level performance against Swansea. He did well in Europe, but I didn’t trust him in the league.

Someone answered in another thread that it was to do with PSR so we sold Kovar which benefited us in that respect.

No idea why people are blaming ETH. I don’t think he has suddenly gone and scouted a back up fecking keeper from the Turkish league.

I think because we couldn't get Verbruggen or anyone else that we really wanted as a number 2 behind Onana.

It's not a pressing issue right now, but I hope we find an Ortega/Kelleher level number 2 eventually.

Another absolutely baffling signing to add to the huge list of shite we’ve signed over the last decade. It’s fecking criminal the amount of money that we’ve squandered.

It was a bizarre signing at the time.

I never understand why clubs moved away from just signing a veteran keeper as the #2 and having the best young lad at the club as the #3

There must be a tonne of goalkeepers in the 31-36 bracket who were once top, top keepers and would now be happy to play 5 games a season
