Why did Liverpool fans boo the national anthem?

Meh, the anthem and being English isn’t a government/royal family thing despite the lyrics. There’s more to this country than a government and some royals. Im no fan of the royal family or our government but I’d personally never boo the anthem because the country is bigger than them.

Also what’s this stuff about how nobody bothers with anywhere north of Watford. Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds are three of the wealthiest cities in the country. There are plenty cities down South that have had decades of being ignored. This whole idea that the North gets screwed is hilariously outdated and completely incorrect.

Aside from London having a spend per person 50% higher than other regions and things like HS2 being massively scaled down to cut costs.

Yeah, because a Tory Republic set in London would fix all the problems for the North.

The more things change...

Scouseland . Wonder what kind of food they serve in Scouseland...

Scouse, it's why they're called scousers!

It's a stew. Think it originated somewhere else but was brought over to Liverpool by sailors when it was a thriving port. Had some once in a Liverpool pub, pretty good actually.

Not sure if everyone does it that way but I remember it being served with red cabbage.

I could have guessed where you live without looking. Why not Google a list of the poorest wards in the country before making a point you clearly don't know enough to make.

Try living in some of the poverty stricken areas of any of those cities you mentioned and then move on to the poorest parts of a Yorkshire or Lancs mill town. Genuine neglect, startling poverty, for decades.

Good to see a fair number of posters on this thread remembering the Republik of Mankunia days, which is exactly the same sentiment as Liverpool voiced at the weekend.

Also notable that the posters in this thread criticising the scousers are more likely to live outside the Northwest.

This.Royalty in 2022? Grow up England. Fair play Scousers.
I do not care for the royals at all. I also don‘t have any time for nationalism - this is across any nation, not just my own. HOWEVER, I respect that people do hold value in these things and I would not impede on peoples rights and beliefs.

Especially in a World where people are now offended by everything, it then becomes extremely questionable why booing the anthem is completely ignored by the media and I would then go back to Peps (kinda whiney) complaint about the media being pro Liverpool. Example: If my own club did such a thing, not only would it be headline news but they would also spin the RA chants into it too.

It is then a fair question to ask, therefore you should go somewhere quiet and rethink your life choices before you tell others to grow up.

Take the plum out of your mouth. And while you’re at it, take off that silly monogrammed bathrobe you’re wearing, you look ridiculous.

It’s because of a perceived conflict with the British state and that idea that the rest of England hates them and looks down on them. To be fair there are running jokes about scousers being criminals etc but I think the idea that England hates them is something much greater in the Scouse psyche than in reality.

England fans booed VVD and Wijnaldum in the Nations League game a few years back. Since then they’ve been booing the anthem. For all the grand political and historic narratives you hear I think its more based in basic childish football tribalism. I don’t think they used to boo it at all previously?

Yeah, you say this, but they did get 14 convictions for manslaughter for Heysel. That is also before we get to the social unrest they cause when a visiting teams bus arrives at Anfield or the type of 'celebrations' they like to throw when they win the league etc.

I am too old to rethink my life choices. I am a socialist. I believe in equality under the law .I am a democrat. I do not believe in people being born into positions of power and immense wealth.
Kings, Queens, Princes, Lords and Ladies are anachronisms that should not exist in this day and age.
I feel quite entitled and advised to tell those in England who still believe in this nonsense to grow up.
Now bugger off.

Best thing the little rats have done.

And yes, United were there first. It took off in the 90s. A lot of anti-England sentiment (and chants) from local fans.

With all due respect to non-local fans, it's hard to understand how screwed over northern cities have been by the London establishment. And that disaffection comes out in different ways at different times.

This seems to be the only post in this thread that actually sheds any light on why Liverpool fans boo the anthem. The city was was totally decimated during the Thatcher years, and people haven't forgotten. I believe it's actually pretty well documented that the Torys were content to let the place die. Add in decades of rage about Establishment cover-ups and blame-shifting about the Hillsborough disaster, and you start to get a picture of the sentiment behind the booing of the anthem. It runs a lot deeper than "Scouse not English".

Mostly all Londoners critiszing the scousers or claiming the government and the establishment don't absolutely despise the northern working class.

And before they come back with London has rough areas too, yeah and them areas are mostly black or other minority ethnics who happen to be another group of people the gov and said establishment hate.

I propose a vote for Scousexit.

No more PL for Scousers, they can play in Scouserland Top Division, or whatever.

This will remain in effect for as long as Klopp is there, perhaps longer.

Anyone in support?

They are unhappy that Prince Andrew is being sidelined.

30 year aged sorrow seasoned with tears if despair, with a side of undying jealousy towards United.

It's not even their National anthem. It's just an homage to the royals. I can see why some wouldn't hold any truck with it.
+1

As far as anthems go, it's horrible, to be fair.

Very true.

They should all be arrested
are you a Tory MP? Because one of those loons said the same thing. Just which law did they break? I'm no fan of the dippers but the day we decide you can or can't boo is the day the tories take us full on fascists

Liverpools always been anti English establishment being more of a Celtic city with a strong mix of Welsh & Irish ancestry. We’ve also got one of the worst national anthems tbf, makes me cringe it’s a jarring dirge compared to many.

This forum lost its shit when England fans booed the Danish national anthem in a pantomime way, then gets behind the scousers booing the English one. I know that there isn’t only 1 voice of the forum, but feck me this is a weird place.

I’d imagine the people losing their shit back then are the people who aren’t backing the scousers now, of which there are blatantly many (the weirdos)

How is that inconsistent?

As a counterpoint it's not even about patriotism. It's specifically anti-establishment and anti-royalist. Different things, and I will defend anyone's right to boo their anthem. Even the dippers.

If it's anything similar to the disdain The North have for the southerners over at King's Landing, then most people would understand just a little bit.

Booing your own anthem is much more acceptable than booing someone elses I reckon.

And I am someone who thinks booing a song isn't that big of a deal anyway, especially something as silly as a "national anthem" at a football match.

If I were to call you stupid I'd be an ass, but if you were to call yourself stupid you wouldn't. Tough concept to crack, but I hope this example helps you get it.

Amazing, trying to take the higher ground and accuse me of ignorance and then proceed to be completely ignorant yourself. Not that it’s any of your business but I grew up in a place called St Raphael’s Estate in Brent, North West London in the 90’s. (Here’s your chance to put Google to use again) But continue to make assumptions and generalisations which is exactly what I was arguing against. There is no substantial - ‘north poor and ignored’ - ‘south rich and affluent’ divide in this country. It’s poor and rich, that’s it. There are areas in Manchester, Birmingham thriving far more than some places down South. Even in London, you should try visiting some wards in Islington, Hackney, Brent and Newham and preach to those people about how as being from ‘down south’ and ‘London’ they’ll have no idea about poverty. Remember as well that these places contain far more people.
I never ever once said there isn’t poverty up north either. I just completely disagree that it’s because there’s this substantial north and south divide when it comes to the spread of wealth, which is supposedly down to the establishment ignoring up north and only focusing on the south of the country. This doesn’t make any sense when you look at all the poverty ‘below Watford’.

Making the Liverpool fans at the game into martyrs is fecking hilarious as well. Considering a) a large majority of them would have been from the south of the country and b) most of the cup final tickets were going for between £90 and £150. I get we all love our football clubs but you don’t get to pay £150 a piece for a ticket to attend a game at Wembley (thus shoving more money into the pockets of the wealthy) and then turn around and boo the national anthem because you’re “sticking it to the establishment”. Get the feck out of here.

I assure you there are very poor white people living in very poor areas in London too. Honestly, it’s not north vs south it’s not black vs white it’s simply rich vs poor and the upper class vs the rest.

The other day Prince Charles rode in an expensive car alongside a hat with over 400 jewels in that is priceless from a house worth 2.5 billion and people can't afford heating and food might have something to do with it maybe

Thanks for all the responses. I never realised this sort of sentiment existed.

Precisely.
