Who do you reckon was out greatest ever center back?
Here's my shortlist (from the ones I've actually seen):
Buchan
McGrath

had the class to play anywhere thats for sure.
I personally thought he was a great Cb but credit also has to be given to Moran alongside him who was also a hell of a defender.
its scandalous we didnt win more in the 80's when you look at the players we had on paper.</strong><hr></blockquote>
Blame me for that. I only missed 5 matches under Atkinson, then when Fergy arrived it all seemed so dull so I started playing Saturday league, instead of watching - I had a decent semi-pro carear but talk about all time DOH !

That's a good list. Assuming Duncan Edwards isn't eligible.

Duncan Edwards was a half back. Centre half pre Munich was Mark Jones or Jackie Blanchflower. Duncan could play anywhere. I remember reading that England moved him to centre forward one game (against West Germany, I think) when they were losing 2-0 and ended up winning 3-2.
In my United all-time dream team I would play him in central defence because there are so many midfield and attacking options. From what I have read he would walk into any team. Its hard to beleive he was only 21 when he died.

Although Duncan could, and did, play in just about every position when asked to do so, centre half was not his best position. For the purposes of this debate and setting aside his off field and injury problems, Paul McGrath has been our most talented centre back. Gary Pallister and Jaap Stam were excellent but each had weaknesses which made them fallible at times. Then of course we had Steve Bruce and before him the dependable rock solid Billy Foulkes both of whom I would put on a par.
