Who was the greatest United Centre Half?

Stam by a mile.
The only one who was worldclass.
Was Pallister even an England regular ? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Was Cantona a French regular?

Your question was " Who was the greatest United Centre Half" ? In that case without a shadow of doubt Duncan Edwards. However the question then changed to Centre Back. Two different animals by old and new definitios..!!

Who do you reckon was out greatest ever center back?

Here's my shortlist (from the ones I've actually seen):
Buchan
McGrath
Pallister
Stam</strong><hr></blockquote>

I'm a lifelong Liverpool supporter matey, abut anyone will tell you that Paul Mcgrath was world class, injuries and a bad lifestyle finished him early but he was MILES better than Stam, Bruce, Pallister et al.

He was as good as Hansen, more powerful but not quite as sharp, bloody great player. I remember watching him at Wembley for an English league side against a 'world side', I think Whiteside may have palyed as well, anyway McGrath was the best player on the pitch from either side.

Does this mean that I'm banned now?

and why has no-one mentioned the news on TalkSport yesterday about the Nike deal being worth £440M over 10 years and being announced on July 5th?

hmmm.. maybe not. You shouldn't have mentioned Hansen though.

And about the 5th July thingy, you are a real spoil sport..... ;)

Can't believe no one said Buchan, you must be a bunch of young'uns.

He has to be the most dependable one we've had. Nothing got past and he had them organised too.

Mc Grath was great when he played for Ireland, Villa, etc. IMO he never really played all that well for United.

So my picks would be Pallister and Stam with Buchan very close.

There is no contest.

McGrath was sublime, head and shoulders above everyone.

A sight to behold.</strong><hr></blockquote>

Good call. I remember the roar building up as he'd sprint across the pitch. I saw many a decent winger leap for his life rather than face a McQueen special! :D

I agree with majority though that McGrath was number 1. Maybe if Stam would have stayed and maintained his '99 vintage...

Easy tiger. Buchan was on the original list. Great captain.

Cant believe no one said Graham Hogg (didnt he leave to join a boy band!) <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Paul McGrath was without doubt the best CB to pull on a red jersey. Even before he retired, when he was at Villa he still looked a class act. Some players are born naturally gifted and he definately fell into that bracket. If he was playing nowadays at his peak i daresay he'd command a 40 million transfer fee.

My memory is that he was more effective in midfield, as back-up for Cap'n Marvel.</strong><hr></blockquote>

had the class to play anywhere thats for sure.
I personally thought he was a great Cb but credit also has to be given to Moran alongside him who was also a hell of a defender.
its scandalous we didnt win more in the 80's when you look at the players we had on paper.

Totally agree. I've seen them all and big Dunc left the rest for dead.

Nesta if you ask this question again in a year...

At the moment, I'd go with Stam.

This thread is like Cantona getting voted the best United Player in history!

Bollocks! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />
