Who replaces Ten Hag?

"Extremely?" What am I missing?

It sounds like he'll probably replace Ancelotti in a years time. But other than that, he played for 3 other big clubs who seem eager to bring him in, I just can't see how he ends up here. If he has another good season at Leverkusen and we have had another year of ETH - I'd say there is very little chance he will want to take over a ruined United when his career is on a high. And there is no way Real, Bayern and Liverpool allow us a free run at him.

See the above post.

Oh crap, I wasn't aware of this.

Carlo Ancelotti’s future at Madrid appears secure with the team eight points clear in La Liga and the Italian signing a contract extension to 2026 in December.

And their current contracts line up to boot.

Speaking to Cadena Ser, Carro also suggested Liverpool still have a chance of striking a deal for Alonso one day, as he stated: "I have no doubt that Xabi Alonso will coach Real Madrid at some point. What I am not clear about is when, but that he will end up at Real Madrid I have no doubt, as it is also possible that he trains Liverpool or Bayern. There are a lot of clubs interested, that's how it is, which doesn't mean that in the future he can't coach some of the clubs mentioned, especially his former teams as a player. But he feels comfortable here, otherwise he wouldn't continue. We will maintain our ambition to play in the Champions League next year."

Honestly not arguing, but what makes Zidane or Tuchel left field if Klopp wasn't because he'd won the German league and got to a European cup final? They've both won leagues and European cup finals.
I wasn’t saying they was left field choices I think they should be the names considered for the next manager

Maybe we should just go all out to get Emery?

He would be my top choice. Not particularly excited about him but what he's done with Villa is super impressive. When was the last time someone dislodged one of those top slots, Leicester?

He's won trophies, and he can play different styles and he knows the PL. My only worry would be his time at PSG where he seemed to lose control of the dressing room, but that seems to be the case for everyone who goes there.

So one of the favourites for his replacement is someone (Tuchel) that people keep saying will fall out with the entire club unless he gets everything he wants his way. Well i'll see you all here in 12 months time.

I'm again very surprised that the media are giving him another pass after another shitshow.

Ole, Moyes and co must be wondering what his secret is

I still want to see EtH run down his contract. I don't have another possible replacement in mind though.

What's your thinking? Save Ratcliffe and the Glazers a few quid? Or are you hoping he'll turn it around in that year?

To be honest, I don't think they can/should go into next season with ETH in his final year. I think it will just cause further drama and probably won't be the stable, forward thinking environment they will be looking to create. And if it inevitably goes south, I think the supporters and everybody else will be on their back also then. So, in my opinion, he either gets another 2-3 year deal now, or is sacked. Would you give him a new contract if push came to shove?

It'll be like the time we stuck with Mourinho after the Sevilla debacle. Most sensible people knew the end of that season was the correct time to part ways. If I remember correctly we had given him a daft contract extension in the January so felt obliged to keep him on into the next season.

We then proceeded to write off half of the following season and have done so another two times since already. We need to stop falling into the trap of habitually letting matches pass us by. Proactively changing the manager to somebody more capable is the best way to do that.

Didn't realise next season was the last on his current contract, even more reason to get rid now IMO.

Emery should be top pick.

If we want to win the FA Cup, we need to get rid of him, put the players in front of the responsibilities.

Appoint an interim manager for the remaining 7 games and hope that this will stimulate them for the final.

If nothing changes, City will hammer us and we'll be ashamed again.

For next season we have not many choices with the obvious ones are De Zerbi and Tuchel.

As Interim, I'd go for an ex players that knows the club but needs a very strong message to make them understand that they are guilty too

I don't see the point of this. It just completely sets us back of trying to transition away from a counter attacking team that sits deep. That is the only thing a manager that is given these 7 games would do, it's what Carrick did and everyone got all misty eyed and forgave some of the players who are not fit for purpose if we want to move forward.

I don't really see De Zerbi as a real option. Since the new year he's only beaten Stoke, Sheffield United, Palace and Forest (Roma is in there, but that was a second leg after a pasting). Tuchel is more reasonable as he has pedigree.

It's a problem that there is a question if Emery would take the United job now. He is probably the best candidate at the moment though.

Have a feeling it will be Tuchel though. Not that my feelings matter much.

Hopefully this new ownership won't make any kneejerk reactions. They're trying to hire "best in class" in all of these executive positions, so there's no reason to think they wouldn't think the same for the manager. I don't see anyone out there who is available and fits that description.

Emery is a good shout tbh, if he takes Villa to the CL, he may fancy staying there another season though.

Emery is also rumoured to be a candidate for Bayern at the moment.

If they already have a manager in mind, I can live with EtH going. I'd extended EtH's deal by another year to avoid the lame duck situation if they need more time to find a candidate. I really want to see another season of EtH though and he hopefully gets it, I'm frankly tired of managerial changes.

'Best in class' managers are very unlikely to choose to come here considering the current mess. They will have better options that are closer to the finished article and won't take a few years to start competing for the biggest trophies.

We need to steady the ship, get ourselves in a strong position, and develop and train the squad to play a style of football that lends itself to success. If ETH isn't capable of doing that, it's utterly pointless to just give him another 12 months because we couldn't get our perfect choice. Because what will happen in 12 months time is if we once again miss out on the CL and continue with this system of chaos football, that perfect manager will join Liverpool/City/Real/Barca/Bayern/PSG instead and we've just wasted more time, more money and more prestige. Because unlike us, those clubs will sack underperforming managers once it's obvious that they aren't good enough, so just because they are signing a new manager this season doesn't mean they won't be doing the same in 12 months time.

The next manager doesn't have to be the one who truly takes us back to the absolute top. They need to improve things and move us in the right direction, and then we can make the decision on whether they've taken us as far as they can or whether they will actually able to take us back to the top themselves. Obviously in an ideal world it'll be them, but it's not an absolute necessity.

Does anyone know enough about Amorim to suggest he would be an improvement on ETH?

It looks likely that he'll replace Klopp. I don't think his stock is any higher than Ten Hag's was before he joined United - pretty much everyone (including me) was very excited about his appointment. I would still be willing to entertain the idea of keeping him beyond this season, but he needs to be told by Ineos in no uncertain terms that a condition of his remaining at the club is that we start to see the kind of possession-based, attacking football we saw from his Ajax side (instead of excuses that it is impossible to play that way here). We're an awful team on the ball, cannot play out from the back, cannot control games and our midfield is essentially just a giant hole - this cannot continue.

Still say emery is the savest option that can at least give us consistent top ucl football which does need to be the first step for this club considering how much of mess we have been of consistently losing out on top 4 football, tuchel would be the other option but his temperament is a concern.

I can't think of any other managers that are gettable that would achieve such consistency?

Tuchel isn't the worst option but it will be the least enthusiastic I'll be about a manager since Moyes.

My expectations will be so low that he'll probably end up doing well.

He's reached the FA Cup final so they can't exactly cut his throat I guess

I think there are two reasons: Yes, a breakdown in the relationship happened quite early in the season when the board failed to deliver the transfers Tuchel expected, so sending him into the season with the mentioned too small squad. As you can imagine it didn't sit well with Tuchel when the CEO publicly told him "he shouldn't complain, he is getting paid to find solutions" (and he did, like fielding Goretzka as a CB).

And while Tuchel did manage to find solutions and rack up a lot of points, he still failed to get the team to play in a cohesive and dominant way but that's expected from a Bayern manager. I think he still did a good job under the circumstances, but nonetheless it's a fact that they played a weak group stage in the CL and while they were able to rack up points in the league they still lost the most crucial match - the away match in Leverkusen, and they lost it despite Tuchel going for a counter-attacking setup. Still they were surprised and outcoached (something similar happened in Frankfurt were they lost 1-5) by changes Alonso did in that match, which I suppose was the final nail in the coffin.

On top Bayern exited the cup early against a 3rd league team, but Bayern exiting the cup early in an embarassing way has happened regularly in the last years and at that difference in quality I'd never blame a manager who fielded a only slightly rotated first choice team in that match, but much more the players. Still didn't help obviously.

Actually by now the tone has already shifted a bit (CL semifinal helps) and there are questions asked if Tuchel might still stay after this season, despite having agreed to part ways (and just on the weekend Tuchel confirmed again that the existing agreement to leave stands).

If you think about it, the chaos on board level and squad building in München is not so different from the current situation in Manchester. So Tuchel would roughly know how this starting situation feels but hopefully have a better team around him to fix it instead of having to go to battle with them. INEOS appointments could mean that United simply is a year further in fixing the structure this summer than Bayern was last summer.

All I read was excuses excuses and excuses.

Not sure about Emery really. He does his best work at clubs where the expectations are relatively low like Sevilla, Villarreal and now Villa. Clubs like PSG and Arsenal where there's a bit more pressure haven't gone so well for him.

The other thing to consider is it wouldn't be easy to get him out of there. His Villa contract runs to 2027 and he may not even want the stress of the United job when he could be managing in the Champions League next season.

Yeah that is the thing, if that Coventry offside stood then it would probably be the start of the pile on

Still think he’s got away quite lightly (which is good btw as I don’t want managers hounded, just seems strange)

Two very easy games coming up where he surely needs 6 points

I think he quickly emerges as the bookie’s favourite a few days into any potential vacancy this summer, when they realise United don’t have any genuine interest in Potter or Southgate

I think Potter isn't outside the realms of possibility, but I'm pretty sure we don't have any interest in Southgate.

Let’s see if INEOS stand by there word… they said we need the best in class in every department. Well all the best managers are at clubs. We’re obviously going to go for 1 that’s free so we don’t have to pay compensation. Got a feeling we’re going to approach potter.

Tuchel would be extremely uninspiring but I might be able to just about get on board with it if it means the end of Ten Hag. Dark timeline.

I think it’s out the question. I think they’ll go for someone who stands a good chance of being successful

Tuchel, Potter, Southgate .. not one of them is "best in class", not one of them would have the slightest chance to be hired at current top 3-5 clubs in top european leagues
