Who replaces Ten Hag?

Can this Southgate to United talk please stop? Liverpool are the ones definitely looking for a new manager so that should be the conversation.
The only reason he’s been mentioned is an agent has taken the Ashwoth link to boost Southgate’s profile.

If this is the direction we are going very soon all the Glazers out will also change their stance and support the Glazers instead.

At the very least, Glazers is trying a modern manager known for attacking football in ETH and generally moving towards that direction.

Appointing Southgate will make us go back to the obsolete defensive counter attacking style of play while all the PL club plays modern attacking football.
Why would any United fan change stance and start supporting the Glazers? No matter how bad it gets, no one will ever support them.

When Southgate comes in I feel Rashford will be doomed. Always seemed to be the case that Southgate saw straight through the BS of him, Sancho etc.

If Southgate comes in then ManUtd are doomed.

Also what BS did he see? He called Rashford for almost all his squads and plays him every game.

I come to this thread i peace, asking for permission to make jokes about Southgate taking over at Man United.

Please, Chelsea have been so bad for ages now, I need some joy in my life.

Wouldn't it make more sense for you to beg United to take Poch from you?

Southgate to Liverpool. Let's both laugh at them!

I'm actually curious - as a Chelsea fan trying to be unbiased etc. - what is your honest views on Eric Ten Hag?

He's not at all what I expected, I thought you'd be playing super attractive sexy football but that's probably more down to by ignorance about him. Been far more pragmatic than I thought.

The results have been (just about) acceptable but I totally understand a lot of your fans frustrations with the style of play in many games.

He's had shit luck with injuries, some of his transfers have been wank and he had the whole Ronaldo/Sancho fallout to deal with.

Overall, I'd give him a 6/10. I wouldn't sack him unless i had someone obviously better lined up.

I think there is a zero per cent chance of Southgate becoming a manager of any Premier league club next season because the timing doesn't make sense.

If England get to the final of the Euro's then that's only five weeks before the new Premier League season starts. It doesn't give him or the club anywhere near enough time to start working on anything.

Mad that this Southgate thing still has any legs. As far as I know it's not been reported by anyone credible - apart from Sky reporting that it's been in one of the tabloids and filling half a slow news day with it.

If this is true I think Ten Hag gets the backing. If I'm not mistaken he was admired at city, where Berrada would have known more about him.
He was rumored to be on their shortlist to replace Guardiola but so have other managers, including De Zerbi and even Rodgers. I think they were just monitoring all decent managers.

You'll have to postpone your indefinite vacation then, unless Ten Hag wins us next season's league title.

Securing a CL spot and winning a the FA Cup would ordinarily be the minimum required. Although with our presiding injuries, I wonder if he will be granted another season even if we crash out on both fronts.

I don't think Rogers or De Zerbi was on that shortlist, and I certainly don't think they were considered as closely as Ten Hag.

Indefinite vacation?

Why? Rumours regarding all those managers where reported. Why believe a rumour about ETH and dismiss one about Rodgers?

And even further, on which base to you believe that ETH was being closer monitored than the others? Any source for that?

It's clear that you like ETH and that's fine, but I think we should leave this out of a discussion about what was discussed internally at Man City, because afaik you weren't part of those.

Well for starters Rodgers isn't the calibre of coach of Ten Hag, and second Pep had name dropped admiration for Ten Hag as a successor to him.

I accept the point about Pep, but I want to see proof (or at least rumours) for the first statement based on what City people think, not what you think, that was my point ;)

I am saying Pep openly spoke about Ten Hag being a potential successor to him, so I would argue that City were aware of his pedigree and would have found him an attractive proposition - particularly because Pep/Tixi/Berrada were very much in sync with each other and shared their recommendations. Pep even said "I would tell Tixi right away" (obviously take this with a pinch of salt).

However, going back to my initial post, my view is that Ten Hag was an admired manager by City (as evidenced with an anecdote above), and as such I can see Berrada granting him some more time. Particularly because there is no manager available who is less of a risk, or has better pedigree than Eric Ten Hag anyway.

There is nothing really to conclude from that they were more keen on him that they were on the others unless you have some links that prove otherwise.

Rodgers links quite concrete at the time. That was around 2021 when he was doing very well with Leicester. De Zerbi has been on their radar for the last few months only, and the links have been here and there too. Both Rodgers and De Zerbi links have been quite widely reported, probably more so than ten Hag links had been at any point.

Rodgers is pretty much the same calibre of a coach though. Both won titles with teams who were well above anyone else in their league in terms of resources. Ten Hag had two good seasons in Europe with Ajax which Rodgers did not with Celtic, Rodgers however has that one season at Liverpool where they did extremely well (his equivalent of Ajax 18-19) and those 2-3 seasons with Leicester where they were consistently punching above their weight.

I think Rodgers is heavily underrated as a coach. The job he did at Swansea, Leicester and that one season at Liverpool was great. It’s how he finished his time at Liverpool and Leicester that drags his reputation through the mud.

Pep has also praised other coaches like de Zerbi and Potter very heavily. It doesn’t really mean anything.

Yeah there is nothing to prove that ETH was rated very highly by City while others weren’t. They are a very well run top club so naturally a manager doing that well with Ajax will have grabbed their attention but it was probably similar with many other coaches. I bet they would have been monitoring the likes of Nagelsmann, Amorim, basically anyone promising.

Someone at City once said that only three current active managers are good enough and suitable to replace Guardiola as City manager. Since then the media has been running with stories about who those three are every year. In 2020 it was Allegri, Poch and Nagelsman. In 2021 it was Rodgers, Potter and Nagelsman. In 2022 it was Ten Hag, Arteta, Vieira. In 2023 it was De Zerbi, Arteta, Kompany. This year it's De Zerbi, Arteta and alternating between Michel or Xavi. Truth is, no one has a clue.

I’m genuinely perplexed as to why Southgate is so reviled by England fans and the English media.

I’m not saying I’d be happy with his appointment, but isn’t he the 2nd most successful manager in England’s history? He has the 2nd highest win rate, even better than Alf Ramsey, took England to the semis in 2018 WC, runner up in 2020 Euros, and quarters in 2022 WC, losing to France who probably had a better team talent-wise.

Player for player, the Golden generation had more talent than this squad, no? The 2018 WC squad had a good starting 11, but there was a steep drop off. feck me, Jesse Lingard started the semifinal match and Ashley Young too…

Again, not saying I’d want Southgate, but I think England fans over-rate the talent in the squad and give Southgate zero credit for how far he has gone in major tournaments.

I‘m not English, but whenever I watch them I feel like they don‘t get above a certain level. There‘s a lack of purpose and intensity.

Honestly, I believe the English squad is a bit overrated while Southgate's achievements are underrated.

In their depth England are strong almost like France, but there aren't (bar of Kane and Bellingham) many real world class players and in the end only 11 can play.

E.g. Germany isn't rated at all and many consider our current crop of players the weakest since the dark days of the beginning of the new millennium.

If I compare the top 11 of both nations, I honestly wouldn't know on which team to put my money to win.

Germany:
Neuer
Kimmich Tah Rüdiger Henrichs
Andrich Kroos
Musiala Gündogan Wirtz
Havertz

England:
Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire Shaw
Rice ???
Foden Bellingham Saka
Kane

Therefore, I think, at least result wise, Southgate didn't do a bad job. England might not have played the best and most attractive football but successful.
You lost against Croatia in extra time in a match that could have gone either way, beaten in the final in a penalty shootout and lost against France because Kane missed his first penalty ever. All very close encounters which could have gone also the other way.
Compare that what allegedly better coaches achieved with Germany over the last 6 years.

I agree, nobody really has a clue about who they rate and who they don't. People just pick the most popular names of the moment. The notion that they have held Ten Hag in higher regard than any other manager is really based on nothing specific.

Why would he leave his role as a PL manager? Is Ogden just taking the piss

I agree with a lot of this. For the WC and the Euros, we consistently see sides that set up conservatively make it deep into the tournaments. Southgate has set up conservatively… Deschamps also does, Argentina as well in the 2022 WC. The only modern sides that have not are probably 2014 Germany, but 8 of the 11 were Bayern players.

Do we know how Southgate would manage a club squad? Not really… I mean, pragmatic potentially… Going deep in major tournaments is certainly a plus.
