I’m genuinely perplexed as to why Southgate is so reviled by England fans and the English media.
I’m not saying I’d be happy with his appointment, but isn’t he the 2nd most successful manager in England’s history? He has the 2nd highest win rate, even better than Alf Ramsey, took England to the semis in 2018 WC, runner up in 2020 Euros, and quarters in 2022 WC, losing to France who probably had a better team talent-wise.
Player for player, the Golden generation had more talent than this squad, no? The 2018 WC squad had a good starting 11, but there was a steep drop off. feck me, Jesse Lingard started the semifinal match and Ashley Young too…
Again, not saying I’d want Southgate, but I think England fans over-rate the talent in the squad and give Southgate zero credit for how far he has gone in major tournaments.
